This 3rd gen Odyssey was produced in LHD in China. They sold a shitload of those in China. Your friend shoud hve no problem sourcing cheap parts, OEM parts are still in stock. He could even convert it to LHD, although arguably JDM parts are of higher quality. There's even some aftermarket support for those. These are a favorite over there, racking up 300 to 400,000km without any engine work.

My mom has an 09 EX-L (obviously usdm spec) and the J35A7 is solid, it’s the trans that sucks. The only thing I can think of that’s unreliable on the ody is the timing belt tensioner, which is a common issue and is resolved when replacing the timing belt

I have an 07 ex-l first year of beefier tranny some have issues but they were improved over previous. A more well known issue is the VCM which every owner should disable as soon as possible. Mine hadnt when I bought it with 111k miles now approaching 140k it needs motor mounts they are costly. Since VCM now muzzled Im going with the cheaper EX motor mounts. Timing belt is a chore DIY but its doable go to odyclub theres an awesome step by step tutorial to download and print. I took about 4 days to do mine but Im a lame old guy in my 20s or 30s would be an easy 2 day weekend. When you have it apart repack the serpentine belt pulleys with a grease needle otherwise theyre problems around 150k miles. These also have electrical gremlins. Still no regrets on purchase the thing handles like a 4 door sedan.

@@NovaZocket52 this should tell you what you need to know. vcmsuppressor.blogspot.com/2016/09/this-blog-organizes-information-on_5.html?m=1 I deactivated mine with a potentiometer based device. It was $90. If I did it again I would use one of the active devices available now, because any resistor based(dumb) device renders your coolant temp gauge virtually useless. The smart ones cut out at 230 degrees to warn you of trouble.

@@NovaZocket52 keep your sliding door tracks clean and lubed. (I use white lithium spray grease) Do the transmission fluid change every other oil change, hondas need that. And pay attention to your power steering fluid. If its nasty it should be changed, using a turkey baster. Lots of info on this stuff at odyclub.com.
