I had my first child at 40. My husband noticed the blood in the catheter too, my mom was in the room and they knew something was wrong. Thank God that the nurse and doctors who acted fast...I was losing blood and pretty fast. I was in and out of consciousness...they wheeled me back into surgery. Thank you God for the opportunity to see and raise my little girl.

@@Msangel06I understand. Full time parenting is not for everyone. There are many ways to mother. Your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors would welcome occasional help with childcare 😊. @MusiqTruth

@@BlackStump172because studies have shown that non-black doctors often ignore the symptoms of black patients, ignoring our pain, and not believing us when we share what we are experiencing. Respectfully, if you would’ve taken a moment to search Google Scholar, you would’ve found several scholarly research papers and articles provided that show significant and extensive research on this phenomenon and why many Black people have chosen to seek out black doctors for this reason. Studies have shown, we literally die as a result of doctors who do not listen to or believe us, and lack empathy when it comes to black patients. So, to answer your question: this is why color/ race is a factor there. This woman was given subpar care and ignored.

@@BlackStump172nothing. So many black people think white people are racist and it couldn’t be farther from the truth. They have nothing to back it up with either. I guess it’s something they’ve been taught but it is they who are the only ones keeping racism alive today!

I had our last child at 38 via emergency c-section. I did leave the hospital, but 1 week to the day I gave birth I had to be rushed by ambulance as I woke up to nurse my 1 week old baby, I laid in a pool of my own blood. Luckily my mom who was there spending time with us is a nurse at Emory University Hospital immediately realized what was happening and called 911. My husband was in a complete state of shock with all the blood lost he saw. Anyway, 2 blood transfusions, emergency surgery and 4 day stay in ICU I made it back home ALIVE! They claimed I had an aneurysm on my uterus. I had a 1 out of 3 chance of surviving. My doctor was very negligent when cutting me open he nicked me with the scalpel and almost killed me. I had doctors and nurses from differ areas of the hospital come to see me because they were in disbelief that I lived. My blood was purple, meaning my blood level was a 5 and the danger level is a 6. I was dying! The worse feeling I’ve ever experienced in my life. I don’t speak often about it, but please speak up! If something like this has happened to you please speak up! It may save another woman’s life! ✨❤️

Glad you made it through. But I think the big issue is that they are using C Sections predominantly on BW even if they are healthy like her. And it's not bcse it is needed but bcse they can charge more. That's why I think they get up in arms when BW have their children at home. Then they try to take the baby away or use fear tactics to ensure you goto the hospital the next time. I personally think it's a traumatic experience for the baby bcse they weren't intended to be birth that way. That should be the last resort.

So sorry to hear about what happened to Judge Hatchett's daughter-in-law. I'm thankful that almost 52 years ago an alert doctor figured out quickly why I passed out when the aides got me up the morning after my son was born. I still remember her saying, "She's hemorrhaging!" and immediately got to work on giving me blood. They gave me blood for 2 days straight. I was so sick that when a baby nurse brought my son in, the doctor told her, "Take him back. She can't have him now." Thank God for major oversight now bc of the efforts of Judge Hatchett and her son. 🙏

On one hand, my heart breaks for this family, on the other hand, I'm glad Judge Hachett is using her voice to bring awareness to such a gut-wrenching topic. Thank God Dr. Benito Alvarez and Dr Chelly Tufts LISTENED to me (both were Dr.'s of color. One Black and the other Hispanic). I only was able to have one child but he was enough.

Judge Hatchett, I’m so sorry for your loss,it is horrific! There are no words that can express the pain that this has caused your family. I too was butchered By an orthopedic surgeon in Tulsa ,Oklahoma having a right hip replacement and was left with a leg length discrepancy of about 1&1/2 inches. I now walk with a limp and a cane. Because of this now I need a left hip replacement due to the imbalance in posture and gait. I approached the hospital administration and their “ Tisk Management department sent me a bogus letter saying that the Dr did nothing wrong and that the surgery went well. I had never had an unequal gait in my life until this surgery in 2021. No responsibility was ever taken because I’m A Black Woman in Tulsa, Oklahoma. No other Drs will correct it and no attorney will call me back on it. At least your case will have some recourse. Mine was totally disregarded. God bless you and your family because I know whatever was done to acknowledge and address the wrong you al suffered and are suffering is never going to be enough nor will it ever be forgotten. No amount of financial compensation could Ever Come Close to Compensating your loss.

Oh no …. I am so sorry this happened to you. I had a spinal fusion done a few years back and when they did that they also shattered my pelvis which was the beginning of many years of pain I still deal with. I know that our black community has gone through terrible treatment but it does happen to some of us white women also. It just seems as some of these doctors feel they are better then us and if a “little” mishap occurs … well it’s no big deal. You having a shorter limb, my broken pelvis… when it happens to us lawyers won’t help because they know the doctors insurance can afford the lawyers and us little people cannot. My heart goes out to Judge Hatchett’s family for being able to peruse this and change things. My thoughts are also with you. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. Sending love 💕

One of the problems is, that they want to hurry up and send you home too early after a C Section in three days. My Grandsons wife went through this too! She kept complaining about how she was in pain. My daughter suggested to them to give her antibiotics before she left the hospital. Well she had to come back. She passed out, and she started hemorrhaging. My daughter and Grandson rushed her back to the hospital, and they had to give her blood. We believe that they also nicked her bladder too!

When I was giving birth to my first child , I almost lost life as well . Right after I gave birth to my child , I started feeling super cold and weak. I couldn’t even hold my babies into my arms . I kept saying that something is wrong , but all of the nurses kept saying that my reaction was normal. But, my brother in law insistence and determination to talk to my doctor was God sent because it turned out that I was having a reaction caused by lack of blood. According to my doctor , I had bleed a lot during birthing and he had left instructions to he nurse to put me on blood transmission. Which they failed to do :( This old is crazy !

My grandmother passed due to negligence during surgery. I was in elementary school and she went into the hospital for routine surgery. They sent her home in a day and she was immediately complaining of pain and her color looked off. By the time she got to the hospital, it was too late. She bled to death internally. Turns out the doctor cut her liver during the surgery and sewed her back up. My dad never sued because back then it was not safe for a Black person to do so.

I’m so sorry another woman of color experienced this delivering in a hospital/c section. I could tell that my doctor was setting me up for interventions & a c section BEFORE I ever delivered my baby (second baby. Previous normal healthy first pregnancy and natural delivery). I moved from that state (NY), transferred my care to a wonderful black midwife / support team in TX and had the most beautiful serene 100% natural, home birth (water birth). Most incredible experience of my life. Zero interventions and zero complications. I thank the Most High!

I had a friend who died after child birth. She was feeling really bad and the doctor and nurses said this pain she was feeling was normal. She said no, something is wrong. Two hours later, they finally took her to get imaging but it was too late. She died because the doctors and nurses thought she was drug seeking. Her death was devastating to her husband and daughter. I lost my friend and it changed me for sure. This issue is not just a problem for people of color, my friend was white. The problem is that our nation's Healthcare system is broken. Doctors and nurses are over worked and because of that they can become rushed, which leads to medical errors or worse they just stop caring for the well-being of their patient and only care about getting paid. I can only image how difficult being a doctor is, but no one should be a nurse or doctor because they care about making money. (Edit- one other issue is the for-profit hospital system, if you need proof of this, look at the salary of most hospital administrators. Average is $256,000 but can easily be much higher. Hospitals should not be for profit, they should be for promoting healthy outcomes for their patients.

@TheShellybaybee It is sick how many women die from childbirth. Women shouldn't have to worry about death while bringing life into the world. Look it up. Here in the USA, more women die during or immediately after childbirth than in Afghanistan. My friends death had such a profound effect on me that I decided not to have any biological children. Thankfully, my husband understood my decision. As my post stated, hospitals should never be for profit. The fact that they are structured that way is scary to me. I avoid them like the plague.

No one wants to say the obvious which is many drs are unqualified to BE ses bc of incompetence. They really don't know what they are doing and/ or they are not very good at what they do. I have personally seen and experienced drs give my kids the wrong diagnosis KNOWS that they were LYING. I even forced a Dr to tell me that he didn't know what he was talking about. Over the decades, the standard of medical care has been consistently ERODING and ppl who are old enough to see the difference can attest to this. It is just a fact of life. I for an initial visit to see an GYN once and was immediately told to remove my clothes. I said NO. I told them I would nIt remove my clothes and be examined in the FIRST VISIT bc I didn't know the Dr and I may not even have liked her so why would I ever do that. Des think they are the experts when it comes to the patients when it is the other way around Patients are the experts on themselves. Drs are just taking educated guesses when it comes to patient care bc no two patients or cases are alike ever.

Yeah I do feel like a lot of them are overworked and take a lot of cases they're not supposed to. My wife got sent almost an hour away from home and at first the doctor told us to find a new office because you could tell she didn't want any unnecessary cases. Slowly she warmed up to my wife and after delivery came by many times to check on her. The nurses would comment that they had rarely seen her show so much care to a patient. She had to make the call for an emergency c section, it was my wife's first baby, but it was the right one. She healed up really great now almost a year later. It's sad to hear that not everyone gets good care and treatment .. we were blessed with a beautiful boy and I often think about every person involved at the hospital, even the nurses who handed him to me that I only met for a few seconds. They all seemed so happy for us.

My heart is broken every time I hear this story - from so many different people - in America. Doctors should never ignore pregnant or newly delivered women, without investigating the issue immediately, EVERY time. When I had my first child (almost 28yrs ago, I didn't know this issue was already an epidemic. Sadly, I can say I'm "lucky" to have survived a pain-laden pregnancy and near-death birthing and delivery event, (at a military hospital facility). I hope they are better today than they were then.

I remember this, I was pregnant with my first son when this happened. I cried to my husband to please don’t let them kill me. I eventually had two C-sections and told my husband I’m done! This woman was educated and most likely had insurance, so this isn’t something that only effects the poor. Some of these medical professionals really think the black body is capable of taking more pain than anyone else. It’s sickening how they disregard black women’s health.

I work as a postpartum, and antepartum nurse. Sometimes I want to message patient and prompt them to read their charts because they can sue for neligence and malpractice. I cant say that because if I do this, I have violated HIPPA and of course the patient will mention my name and pull me into it. I have seen where DRs have let a black patient's baby die and do everything under the sun to keep white patient's babies in utero. I have seen where minorities have only 400mg of Ibuprofen every 8 hrs after having a C-section. Thats major abdominal surgery!!! People get mistreated because pf obesity... babies born not breathing because of prejudices towards obese pts. I know that some of you will ask why not report it to the higher ups that can dp something about it, but If you think hospital administrators are going to side with the nurse that could help their organization get sued, its not going to happen. Its their job to cover stuff up. People, please ask questions, dont just let someone bypass or brush off what your concerns are.
