00:00 Introduction
For us at the Gentleman’s Gazette, we believe that a gentleman should not talk about others negatively, especially on internet platforms, such as reaction videos. However, we think it’s great to be better than your previous self.
On the Gentleman’s Gazette, we decided to leave every video up to show you how we progressed from the very beginning to where we are today. So, why react to 19 Thing Men Should Never Wear? Well, on the one hand, it’s a very polarizing title. On the other hand, the video is three years old, so things have changed and hopefully, I have evolved, too.
01:30 "19 Thing Men Should Never Wear" Reaction
Overall, we can see why this is probably the video that has the most dislikes but at the end of the day, it still has more likes than dislikes but it was a very kind of polarizing video that got people to react, and maybe because of that, it’s still popular and youtube recommends it because they realize that people just react to it and a reaction is maybe better than no reaction.
From a gentlemanly point of view, that’s certainly a little too extreme and if I’d film it again, we will be a little softer in the words, a little more accepting, and open but at the core, the suggestions we made would still hold true today and to finish the video off, let’s go with another quote, this time, from Oliver Cromwell, “He who stops getting better has stopped being good.” We firmly believe that.

I feel like a lot of the people who criticized the original video were failing to understand that your channel is strictly about classic, gentlemanly fashion and mannerisms. Everything on Gentleman's Gazette is approached from that perspective. If that's not their style, than the videos on your channel aren't made for them. There are plenty of other channels on men's fashion that may be more appropriate to their personal style.

The word “peasant” means something different than a medieval pauper to younger people. I don’t know how familiar you are with “Hype beasts”, but they’re obnoxious young people who wear nothing but designer clothes. They re-popularized the word by calling anyone who can’t afford designer goods “peasants” in a very degrading way. This may have contributed to any recourse you got for saying people looked like peasants, people may have been associating you with the hype-beasts

The problem is going overboard with it. A haversack, belt pouches, fishermen's vest or surveyor vest would do. Objects weigh more below your center of gravity. Another problem the more storage space a person has the more items they are never going to use are put in the storage space. I and other bushcrafters have earlier in our hobby have been guilty of this. I do have a few cargo shorts and cargo pants compared to my regular outdoor shorts and outdoor pants. When I do wear them I'm not carrying a haversack but a backpack and keep my wallet, keys, multi-tool, a Bic lighter, maps, base plate compass, pencil, and a small notebook in the cargo pocket.

I agree with your style 100%. In a world that specializes in so many outlets of creativity, men's dress promoting conservative wear should be highlighted. Men's dress wear should command respect, not demand respect. Men of authority should present themselves in a confident manner when socially engaging with others. Men's wear has changed through the years but first impressions are slower to change.

I like how you've lighten up and said you'd speak softer words or avoid phrases like peasants and others from your past videos. I remember that was the main reason why I stopped watching your videos like 5-6 years ago. I just found this video today and your personality seems very different - warm and welcoming. Can't wait to catch up on some very good content 😄

Please make a video about the style of two very peculiar gentlemen, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson! Their style has changed with every interpretation of the characters by the various actors... And not just Cumberbatch and Downey Jr! Iconic Sherlock Holmes actor Basil Rathbone appears in Dressing the Man and another book by Alan Flusser. I hope it's food for thought and you make a video like you did for Kingsman.

Eldredge tie knot or bow tie. Eldredge has the huge advantage that it lets you wear ties that fit you (it’ll completely use up your tail) as well as ties that are too long (because it’ll use up that tail if you tie it slightly looser or tuck in your tail). This opens up shopping options that would otherwise be closed to you. Of course you have to have the confidence to pull it off, but if this is your signature look (me) or your single major accent (also me) then it lends just the right level of interest to an otherwise boring costume.

This vid contains a good combination of yellow tie and blue suit / blazer. There is hardly any content on yellow tie combinations. It seems to be one of the most beautiful ties especially the light yellow. Or a whole series of affordable dress shirts and tie combinations. Great vids!!!

I'm really happy a channel like this can be self-depreciating when appropriate. It was very well-handled. I'm also really happy to see a dapper gentleman who is clearly not afraid of tiny tie-knots. It's the type I've always tied, but in recent years I was worried it made me look a little stingy. I do like the look of a larger knot, not as large as a full Windsor, but it's reassuring to see my old type was never really bad. Watches... yeah. I've thought about wearing some crazy watches because, when I was a kid, I always wanted a computer watch, ;) but attention-grabbing is risky and status symbols... well, I have to say status symbols can be so gauche! XD

Actually i have an idea for a video: how would blue collar workers dress dapper? Usually dressing up is associated with white collar workers but how would other do it? Not the best example, but Peaky Blinders style was somewhat dapper although they were not really workers.
@edennis8578
@edennis8578 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? Blue collar workers can't really dress in a dapper way on the job; it isn't practical. Off the job, why would it be any different for a blue collar worker as opposed to a white collar worker? As a woman married to a man who started as a blue collar worker and is now in management, you dress for the job when you're doing physical work, but dress as a gentleman when you want to off the job. My husband favored tweed blazers for every day when we were out and about. We live in a small college town, so outside of weddings and funerals, a suit looks out of place 99% of the time.

I've not seen the show, so do not know what their social status is. The fashion I have seen from the boxset stills looks typical working class. Authentic photos of working people from c.1890-1930 shows even the children wore 3-piece suits. Only the toffs would dress up. The peasants may have a Sunday best for church on their only day off a week.

Sven (or anyone reading this), what are you thoughts on the leather backpack or backpack/briefcase converter? I am a college student who loves classic style but due to the large amount of books I have to carry as well as a history of shoulder pains, I tend to prefer a backpack for my commute by cycle. It does clash a little with the general style of my outfits. What would you suggest as other good alternatives?

Do you wear jackets to class or do you still wear polo shirts? If you wear polo shirts, I guess a backpack might be alright. If you go with a jacket, I have no other opinion other than use e-books and wear a briefcase.

If you are wearing a suit jacket, sport coat, or blazer and still need to use a leather backpack take off the jacket while wearing the backpack. It will also help protect the jacket from excessive wear and tear caused by the backpack's straps. An option may be a satchel bag in leather and/or waxed canvas like those found in Carbon2Cobalt. Alternate which shoulder you wear the strap over to balance the weight over time. Sinch the strap as not to have the bag too low. It should be above your center of gravity. Have the bag under the shoulder facing away from the street with one hand firmly holding the bag by the handle.

@12:21 - True story: My wedding. My parents are at the altar, and I noticed that my father is wearing white gym socks in a formal suit and shoes. I could either interpret it as purposely throwing a monkey wrench into our moment, or that he forgot, or that (as it eventually happened) his mind was going. That was 22 years ago. I forgot about that until tonight when I watched this video.

A button down shirt with a tie should always have the top button buttoned. Without a tie, the top button should not be buttoned; a totally buttoned button down shirt without a tie is traditionally a manual-laborer look: farmers working in the field, ditch diggers, and prisoners on a chain gang.

A vest is really not compatible for those if us who conceal carry. The vast majority carry strong-side "inside-the-waist-band" (IWB) with holster hung from the belt. With a jacket, a shoulder rig might be viable (if generally undesirable - less safe, slower presentation), except most shoulder rigs need to be anchored to the belt so the frame quickly separates from the holster. Appendix carry (AIWB) would also be blocked by the waist coat hanging over the top of the trousers. In the 20's and 30's, "vest pocket" guns were popular. Perhaps a vest could be modified to carry a micro 9, j frame, or a micro380.

@Su113Y I agree and disagree with this saying. On the one hand it allows people to be whoever they want and do anything they like, as in chase any career path and not hold back on fulfilling their dreams; on the other hand, it also makes people stay extremely stagnant and stop improving. I see so many people use this "be yourself" as an excuse to stay stagnant as they won't admit that they're too lazy to make a positive change in their life, and it also makes people not change or improve their social behaviour for the better, some people are very annoying and expect you to deal with it under this "be yourself" nonsense. A better saying would be: "Be the best version of yourself."

It's also really, really comfortable and cheap too. That's what people prioritize. Dressing up is a privilege. Most people can't afford to drop 40 bucks on a pair of socks. They are happy with the 12 pack of whities. I'm glad that fashion is less of a societal expectation but more of a personal expression. It means those with a genuine passion can easily find each other.
