No matter how much criticism Zomato gets for being a loss-making company, it indeed was a game-changer for the Indian ecosystem. All it did was focus on one simple thing - 'Make users lives easier.' At this scale also, Zomato never fails to innovate and bring on new ideas to the table. It definitely is a food-tech giant in making...

Wasn't zomato a copy of another startup in bangalore who used to publish online menu, started with B i am forgetting the name. Zomato actually copied that model and zomato delivery came a lot later after foodpanda (originally called something) else, then swiggy and then zomato...so this story is useless...i have actually seen rise of each of these, swiggy founder delivered a order at my place in blr at that they used to charge 20 bucks to order from anywhere, even if the restaurant was not listed...
@backstagewithmillionaires2 жыл бұрын
Hi Techbasics, Swiggy was founded in 2014. TinyOwl was 2014. Foodpanda was 2012. Are you talking about Hungry Bangalore? They were started in July of 2006, 4 months after Foodlet. Or maybe you're talking about Burrp? (not Bengaluru-based, they were from Mumbai). That was started 1 month after Hungry Bangalore. We covered this competition in Part 2 of this Zomato series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fX-Tc32opt-Ig8U watch from 2 minutes 39 seconds if you're interested to understand how Foodlet was first. You're right though, Zomato was not the first to do delivery - they copied that from their competition. -Caleb

I dont know you know but this is such a first bull I am hearing from you, as I work in the same space and Zomato did not start with delivering food + Dipendar goyals story as clickbait is a whole lot of swirl you bring in, show some respect to this man... do your research properly and please put proper thought in research
@backstagewithmillionaires2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ranjith, happy to share with you all of the sources of the info we used to make this video, but first please tell me which parts of the video you think are incorrect/false, ideally with timestamps, and I will share the source of that info. At 7:22 I said that customers could place an order via Foodlet and have it delivered to them. Of course, Foodlet did not have a fleet of delivery partners at this point in time, so the delivery was not handled by Foodlet, but instead the restaurant itself. If you don't believe us about this food ordering functionality, see it for yourself: web.archive.org/web/20060701100400/www.foodlet.com/store/home.php This is Foodlet's website in July of 2006. In the top right corner you can find the "Current Order" button, and when you click on that, you will be directed to a URL called foodlet.com/store/shopping_cart - at this URL, customers could place their order. I do not know if this service was cash-on-delivery, or if there was some kind of online payment function, but my guess would be COD, as online payments still weren't very common in India in 2006. "Dipendar goyals story as clickbait" Again, please share the parts of Deepinder's story in our video which you felt were untrue or misleading, and I will be more than happy to clarify the source of that info. We did many weeks of deep research into old news articles, old videos, archived websites, blog posts written by Deepinder, Deepinder's old Facebook posts, and more. Finally, you said "show some respect to this man" - I have the utmost respect and admiration of Deepinder Goyal. He is a stellar entrepreneur, and a very courageous person in my opinion, and I actually look up to him as a source of inspiration, which is why I wrote the script for this video, in order to highlight his amazing journey where he overcame so many obstacles to do something innovative and unique. -Caleb

stop glorifying copied ideas
@backstagewithmillionaires2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely nothing wrong with copying Prasenjeet, who told you otherwise? Many of the best businesses in history were copied, and those copies out-performed the incumbents because of superior execution. The only place I've heard people looking down on "copying" is in an academic context - teachers tell us not to copy on assignments and tests, which are not at all representative of real world scenarios. In business, 99% of the ideas people have are already being implemented by someone, somewhere in the world, and there's nothing wrong with that. Unless someone is a genius and is able to come up with a 1% totally novel, unique idea, there is no other path except copying, and the people who can't swallow their pride and accept that usually end up not starting anything at all - they live their lives waiting for that 1% unique idea that never comes. That being said though, to my knowledge, Zomato is actually a rare startup which was (for the most part) not a copy. Please tell me which other company they were copying? As far as I understand, Deepinder was inspired by a New York-based company which was delivering food to offices (like a tiffin service). This was before Swiggy, Tiny Owl, Foodpanda, and basically every other Indian food delivery startup. Even if Zomato did copy someone though (please let me know who they copied, am curious about this), copying adds healthy competition to the market - imagine if there was one 1 of everything? 1 ISP, 1 automotive manufacturer, 1 smartphone company? If copying was "bad business" then why are there so many competing companies, driving the prices of items down so that they're more affordable for consumers? -Caleb
