Phil is the best biologist. He understands that weasels lay eggs. He gets it. Edit: oh my god this guy is actually a medieval doctor
@Jerebee-DS Жыл бұрын
Remember: The only reason people wore those Plague Masks was because they thought the sickness spread through MIASMAS/SMELL, and would usually stuff flowers/herbs to cover the smell of the sick. Miasma as a reason/theory to sickness was debunked in the late 1870's due to a report finding out that anthrax was actually a microorganism, not just a "smell". Medical history, while seeming stupid and easy to laugh at during our time, does have some good points at times, even if it's pure coincidence. Leeches are a good example of this! They were used as a way to "cure" or help fix sickness. While this clearly isn't the case, leeches ARE great at creating blood-flow that can reattach limbs or just get blood going again! Their ability to thin blood and attach to bodies works well for their needed purpose/ability to survive, thus letting their use in the medical field to continue!

That is an uncalled diss towards Medieval doctors man. In actuality, they weren’t any worse than the doctors before them or after them. They had a good understanding of surgery (good common sense) and application of naturally occurring medicine, and they displayed a fairly sophisticated system of medical understanding (inherited from the Ancient Greeks, which puts a thorough dent in the uniqueness of the Medieval doctor’s supposed “stupidity” in comparison to the “rational” ancients) The only reason people go hurr durr Medevil doktor bad is because of some very old and terribly outdated stereotypes that display as much knowledge on the actual Middle Ages as Phil does about biology here. See James Hannam’s fantastic 2011 The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution for a comprehensive overview and casual debunking of an old caricature. A full list of sources and a more in depth look into the historiography of the whole dark ages myth can be found on my document here: docs.google.com/document/d/1bQMJDEhE84kfwzbzDvnkNNi-LueeuJD3yugFMF_ZnB4/edit (still a bit of a work in progress) God I’m such a nerd

The whole Black Death bit made me cry, because it was the FLEAS on the rats that caused the disease. The people at the time thought that cats were evil, so they killed a bunch of them, causing a rat population explosion. And they had fleas. It was the FLEAS that carried the disease and caused everyone to get sick, and since the rats carrying the fleas were everywhere, and so the fleas got everywhere, thats how the disease spread. Im sure someone has said it now, but holy crap that bit made my brain bleed more than others Edit: nvm the dolphins bit made me cry more as an ocean animal enthusiast. They're mamals, awhh gosh

Did, did anyone explain to Phil that swimming was a voluntary action even by fish and dolphins? Also, dolphins' breathing is actually manual and not automatic like human's. That is how they commit the self die in aquariums by drowning, Phil. On a fishing note: Phil is actually right. Because sound doesn't travel well between air and water, fish don't really notice people talking or even yelling. They'd probably notice if you had a loud radio on the bottom of a boat because then the vibrations might transfer to the water.

Others said this aswell but yeah i actually do underestand where Phil is coming from on the dolphin one - i didn't know that the breathing part was 100% completely voluntary with dolphins and they did not have like a reflex that makes their body subconciously go up and potentially get air. I mean, humans have an involuntary reflex to breath when unconcious, that's why you cannot kill yourself by asphyxiation without a tool to do it, like a rope and stuff. It does make sense that dolphins don't have that when they are underwater, but it definetly is a disadvantage that they aren't involuntarely able to go up. Though even if they could it might not stop the dolphin from getting himself intentionally stuck somewhere in his enclosure.

@Phisnom On the topic of “do mammals reproduce through eggs” in a sense all mammals do, but not in the traditional way. An egg, biologically in most animals, just a single, female reproductive cell. Be it from a bird, or something else, the size just varies quite drastically between creatures. (So yes, when you have a delicious scrambled egg, you’re eating a mutilated, cooked reproductive cell. That’s quite literally what you are doing when you cook a chicken egg) The S*erm is the male equivalent. In this regard even Humans develop from eggs, except we don’t LAY them, they remain inside the female and develop into a baby when fertilized by a s*erm cell. At this point, the cells will constantly split and deviate until the organism is properly formed. Naturally, this process executes differently depending on the creature. So for instance, a female salmon lays unfertilized eggs, and then the male essentially N*ts into the water all around them. I can’t believe I just had to give a middle school biology lesson to someone one year older than I am, but life’s an adventure I guess.
