((TLDR: Jax could potentially be acting the way he does as a means to prevent himself from getting too attached to people who might abstract; potentially dooming himself to abstraction in the process.)) I've had a bit of an ongoing theory about why Jax acts the way he does ever since Episode 2. Like yes, he's most definitely an asshole and I doubt that it's a new part of his personality he just DEVELOPED since arriving at the circus. Being an asshole is DEFINITELY a natural part of who he is. My theory more is to do to why he doubles down so hard when it comes to how he treats everyone else around him. Right from the beginning he hasn't really paid any mind to how anyone around him feels and will bully them without discrimination. It doesn't matter who, anyone is a target to him. He hasn't really shown any real empathy or care for anyone else in the circus or in general...accept for one, split second moment. Towards the end of episode 2 when Kaufmo's funeral was being spoken about. For the briefest moment, he's seen to be genuinely sad before he shakes himself out of it and retreats; not even showing up to the service. With that moment combined with how hard he doubles down on being awful to everyone around him, and especially upon seeing an example set by Kinger about how to cope with and process someone you love abstracting...I wonder if the reason Jax pushes everyone away and isolates himself so much is because he lost someone he deeply cared about at the circus to abstraction. At this point, we don't know how long anyone has been at the circus besides Kinger and Pomni (Kinger being there the longest and Pomni being the newest), but according to Jax's account in the pilot, we can assume it's been for a few years at least; more than enough time for characters to come and go if the amount of abstracted characters we saw in the cellar and crossed out faces in the living quarters have any merit. If in the beginning of his time in the circus, Jax allowed himself to form a connection with someone else there and allowed himself to GENUINELY care for someone...only to watch as they abstract and cease to be who they were...while certainly not a HEALTHY response...that COULD be a reason why he doubles down so much on his asshole-y front he puts on. He doesn't want to get attached to anyone if there's such a high chance of losing them too. He was likely already cynical and apathetic upon arrival and especially after coming to grips with the situation, but that lack of care for others could've only grown as a means to protect himself from feeling the pain of losing someone to the abstraction again. After all...if you don't get attached to anyone that arrives...if they abstract it shouldn't hurt nearly as much...right? I know the likelihood of the theory being correct is pretty slim and admittedly it gives Jax FAR too much credit than he likely deserves, but if there IS any truthful merit to it, then it honestly would make for an interesting duality between Jax and Kinger in how they survive in the circus and deal with grief. Rather than let himself get close to other people and form those real connections, Jax is actively pushing people away and causing others to think less and less highly of him while he throws himself into destroying every world he enters as much as possible. It's like he's actively TRYING to ensure that no matter what, HE won't get attached to ANYONE, and NOBODY will get attached to HIM...and if what Kinger implies is true and that kind of scenario could mean abstraction...then Jax could actively be setting himself up for his own downfall by engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms for a situation he desperately doesn't want to relive again. Again, that's if the theory has ANY merit whatsoever. Okay, that was a LOT and I apologize for that. I just really enjoy this show and wanted to throw my 2 cents into the discussion since I unfortunately couldn't be there for the stream. ^^;

Chat was flabbergasted lol Adding onto the fun facts, moss is not a fungus but is instead a plant that preforms photosynthesis! Fungi are interesting because they are neither plants or animals. They’re literally a secret third thing lol. The way fungi get energy is more similar to animals rather than plants since they decompose things! They get their energy from other organisms, not the sun. So in the end, rust is just a form of metal after a long term chemical reaction with oxygen, and moss is just a regular plant (unlike fungi which are more like people than plants when it comes to energy). Kinger’s love of bugs being connected to his now abstracted wife is really good and tragic, but I will forever love the theory that he cared about bugs because he joined the circus as a bug tester.

I have a bit of a problem with so many of James' monsters having to do with his sexuality when he shows pretty much NO sense of sexuality. I understand not making him constantly horny, but the devs could've given him a BIT more of a sexist/sexual attitude so that his characterization didn't feel almost at odds with his symbolism.
