It's probably not an issue of generosity but law. Next of kin was his grandfather's siblings, one of them being this guys father. If all of his grandfather's siblings are dead the next of kin would be the grandchildren, nieces and nephew's. That is done by default. Most likely his grandfather didn't have a Last Will and Testament naming this guys parent as the sole successor. I know someone who inherited money from one of his uncles due to those circumstances. That's why it's important to have a Will. Trust me, nobody would have shared 3 million with 20 of their cousins unless they had too. That's $150k each person.
@someperson8151

@@trumtrum5136 they didn't know about his collection until long after his death. He kept them private. If any of the money grabbing relatives knew about them, they would try to pressure him to sell. They'd press him to sell when they were worth 10K in the 1970s.

When i find collections of really old looking baseball cards in an old dusty box my first impulse is always to throw them out immediately also - lucky my man was the type to make considerable effort of opening a browser and typing "is turn of the 20th century sports memorbilia junk or trash"! He and his cousins had the additional good fortune that within the first few searches a helpful forum reply pointed him in the right direction - if that post was any deeper on the mouse scroll than 8 or so searches they would have gone straight in the skip-bin that he pre-hired before checking out what was up there - Straight off to the dump along with all the chests of yellow shiny round things - (that just about fucked his back getting them down the ladder!)

As someone who collects, resells, and "hunts-down" cool and vintage items, it's AMAZING what's out there!!! Thrift stores, small-town auctions, private collections, garage sales, estate sales, antique stores, attics....it's flippin' CRAZY what people have laying around/in storage...ASSUMING the item has little to no value!

What a good guy. Splitting that with all his cousins. Solid.

Now I got about seven thousand baseball guards that my dad left behind, I never looked at them, never paid attention, they're still sitting there.

Ty Cobb was a great movie. Portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones. Fact.

Only $3 million? A collection like that should've fetched a LOT more than that. But still, that was an incredible find. Awesome!

I hate it when folks come across there grandparent's old belongings that are stored for ages, and immediately there first thought is "i have to get rid of all this junk now". If it were me, i'd cherish everything and hold onto them. That's history. A past you can never get back. Sentimental value. I'd never get the thought of it being junk i have to throw out. And if they were valued at a high price, i'd make sure if i did decide to sell them, that they'd go to a very safe place where they'll be protected and cherished. (And that I'm getting the most money for it). That's IF i lived in an old house. I've never lived in a house before. I don't know how that would feel. To have an attic and basement. I've never experienced that before. My whole life were apartments. If i did, i'd definitely make sure to have all the windows and doors closed. That's for sure. I also hear a lot about home break in's. I wouldn't fear much in that aspect, even at night. Once you break into my home, you've given me permission to off you. But that's another story.
