Love does not rejoice in iniquity. We can show love, kindness and compassion toward sinners in many ways that don't include participating in a ceremony that is a celebration of sin. It's not about compassion vs. non-compassion; it's about defining Biblical love beyond vague terms.

Exactly. Attending a wedding is, by definition, celebrating and supporting that union. In no instance, no matter how sincere you are, can a christian attend a LGBTQ+ "wedding."

Justin says: “To have compassion and mercy towards a sinner who is living an overtly sinful life is not the same thing as condoning their behavior.” I know this is true because Christ had compassion on me as an overt sinner, but never condoned my sin. This compassion is what drew me to Him and is continually changing my heart to hate my sin more and love Him more.

People always skip over the verse that says “God’s kindness leads you to repentance” God is so kind to us all things considered. He’s abundantly and radically kind to us.

Yes but more typically people act like it's their kindness that leads people to repentance. His kindness is defined in Romans 3:24-26 Our kindness is not the gospel, but of course we are to be kind.

I know why God has blessed us with wise leaders like yourself to guide and encourage those of us who tend to drive alittle close to the ditch and even sometimes drop a wheel into the gravel. Thank you for your clarity and also for the love you show by taking the time to do these videos. Wonderful. I had a few people reach out to me regarding Alistair and I am thankful that my counsel is in line with yours. ( whew!!!) God bless you guys.

”you guys are so kind“ - a temporary front virtue signaled to strangers in public is very different from the multiple back stabbings that they will endure after spending 11 years in your church and then deciding that they disagree theologically. Some of us know the ”Paul Harvey“ of the matter.

The problem I have with He Gets Us is this: It takes an act that was for those *inside* the community. And yes Judas was part of the visible community at this point, and Jesus specifically warned the act had no validity to him. And it makes the act normative for outsiders. Yet Jesus says specifically it is only useful for those who are "bathed." It is about holiness as well as service. Are we to have compassion? Yes. Let's encourage our churches to show radical Housekey Hospitality to our neighbors. Where we can meet the needs of others, we should. But this doesn't get John's Gospel. At all. It sends the world's vision of love. Not John's. We need to grasp where the "one another's" end and being wise with the world begins. We need to love our enemy, and remember they're still our enemy. Also, I agree about Gavin's video, 100%. And got roasted on twitter for doing so. So I hope that clarifies I'm *not* saying be law or seek the clicks. I'm simply saying we can be critical of the content, while still wanting to love our neighbor. But 1st, we need to understand what love is Biblically.

Spot on! Rosaria said it beautifully and succinctly. You don't love your enemies by pretending they're your friends. Our dear brothers here are failing to make this crucial distinction. No one has shown more insight on these matters than our sister Rosaria, IMO. She's got the balance of grace and truth on the most crucial issues of our day. Our dear brothers here seem to lack it. If we keep approaching theology in the abstract, we do so to our own peril.

I am so thankful for you two and your ministry. Your podcast has helped me a lot and i will continue to listen! With that, I think this episode misses the mark when it comes to Pastor Begg and the HGU campaign. In fact, I think you skirted/avoided the issue or title of the video. I agree with the theological points you make (love, compassion, etc.) But the application and comparison examples fall short. Being kind to wait staff or a bartender or an Uber driver and "planting seeds" (I know Asheville and get it) is one thing...but it's apple to oranges when compared to Pastor Begg and the He Gets US campaign. We all have fallen short and while we are still sinners, Christ died for us! Hallelujah!!! Ultimately God is in control and His will be done. The Holy Spirit saves people and transforms their hearts, not me or you. We Christians are called to be light in darkness, to seek His wisdom and discern how we engage in this world. We are called to speak (or demonstrate/live out) truth in love, which will offend the world. We need to check our hearts that we do this our of love not hate, more importantly we need to resist the temptation to be weak and passive...don't fear man! This is much different than being meek and humble, where man is fearing God, not other men (aka the world). What Pastor Begg said and then doubled down on is, well, sin. His pride took over. Agreeing to affirm an overtly sinful marriage is not right and wise...especially coming from a man of his stature. Now if he said, i will go and write them a letter about Jesus, the gospel, and how they can repent, that's one thing (ala "planting seeds with the bartender at the brewery")...but he didn't say that or allude to that at all in any of his public statements. The He Gets Us camapaign is woke and heretical. Simple as that. We should be jumping at opportunities to tell people why its bad and not a representation of Jesus. Some of us may be called to speak out...not in anger and self-righteousness, but with love for His Truth. I think of Richard Wurmbrand who suffered and was tortured for 14 years by communist Marxist post WWII, who loved his enemies by not letting go and denying Jesus (all the while the Eastern Orthodox church was captulating to the government in hopes of dodging persecution, kind of like the American luke warm woke church of our day. Read his books or watch movies about him. He loved his enemies by going to them and sharing the good news of Jesus. We are called to love and have compassion, to not think of ourselves higher than we ought to....but that does not mean staying silent if fearing man. Fear God, stand for truth, even if that truth is perceived as " hate." Rejoice in persecution as scripture says to. These are exciting times! We are here for a reason and a purpose. And that is to proclaim and stand for His truth, however He calls us to.

It's moments like listening to this edition of the program that make me grateful for the ministry of Rosaria Butterfield. Such a sweet, compassionate woman who also understands the times in which we live. She's at the school board meetings, calling out sin, taking the slings and arrows, and inviting her enemies over for dinner, afterwards. She doesn't approach these biblical issues in the abstract, as if they're no different than say, financial stewardship. And she wisely warns us to not make the mistake of thinking that the way we love our enemies is by pretending they're our friends. I love Theocast, but it seems on these types of matters, they're just missing it. For a masterclass in biblical compassion while upholding truth, just watch any of Rosaria's recent interviews or lectures. She gets it.

Just found your content guys. I appreciated your program. The subject of Alistar Begg and his counsel has been very interesting to me. Having come out of the homosexual lifestyle 10 years ago myself I have wrestled with some of these issues. Most of the friends I had in the gay community are aware of my conversion and for the most part are either supportive or indifferent, none have actually shunned me, although most I rarely see since we no longer have a whole lot in common. I do have a couple of friends that I have remained engaged with and I try to keep communication open. They are pretty amazed in the change in my life and I want them to see what Jesus can do. I had a friend who got married to his partner and I was invited to the ceremony, but couldnt attend because of other commitments, I did send a gift and I always treat them well. They are aware that I don't condone their lifestyle, but we agree to disagree. I have asked the Lord to work through me and our friendship to be His light to them. I actually believe that coming out of that sin can help me to understand the trials that homosexual men deal with, and I am more than willing to share the solution that I have found.

Half way through and I'm already loving it. I agree 100% with Justin in that if I'm prone to fall off on one side or the other, it's going to be on the love, grace, and mercy side than the law side. I agree we need to be balanced, but I am not a confrontational person by nature, so I will default to grace over law most of the time.

I get what you're saying, Brother. Self control, that we are all striving for is balanced. Obviously someone who is caustic, mouthy, and flies off the handle with their anger is lacking in that area. But a type B personality who fails to speak up when they need to also lacks self control. It's the challenge of overcoming cowardice. Don't forget that. I think a lot of type B personalities chalk *all* of their confrontation avoidance up to points in the grace and self control column when they don't necessarily belong there. We are to say what needs to be said lovingly.

He Gets Us is part of a lead generating business who charges churches for leads. The criticism is not friendly fire (eg megan bashan) because her criticism is against those for whom the love of money and of desire for the good opinion of man has become an idol. It’s brought down so many leaders and made a shipwreck of the faith of good men. And Ortlund may have been the least offensive of her examples except that he only had an out because he talks out both sides of his mouth (saying he doesn’t condemn those who deny extreme climate change because of human interference but much more often in his podcast saying anyone who denies it is not educated)

God is Love! Do we comprehend all that is being said ? The light you talk about if seen through a prism, shines in an amazing display . We understand or don’t fully understand the love of God in the same way. How can Gods love be displayed in those you would label Christian jerks. Take a moment and see how God equips the family, a husband that is gifted by God to use judgment and discipline in a loving way, and his wife that is gift by God to display this same love of God ,but it’s appears as a different light. Yet it is the same light, the source is Christ and the Same Spirit resides in both the Father and mother. Now ask the Child in the time of correction, who is displaying the love of God? This I believe is our error, we are asking man, what is love? We always need to believe God is love in all His ways, even if we see them as unloving. Why are Christians persecuted? Because they are always seen as loving? No because the world will see you as light,revealing the darkness. I have benefited greatly by your law and Gospel distinction and yet believe we continue to be taught, that we don’t fully understand the light but are told not to despise but to test all who claim to be of the light and guided by the light. We might just find out that we are all jerks and God is long suffering, do we know we are all led by one light, the Holy Spirit.

The problem with the "He Gets Us" people is that their messaging isn't clear. They make it seem like the Gospel is only about feeding people and washing people's feet and accepting sin, but if you research where these people get all their money from, it's from groups that have conservative theology/politics. My whole problem with this ad campaign is that they don't tell people the actual Gospel message, not even necessarily that they're trying to paint Jesus a sin-affirming person because if they had the complete opposite message and still no Gospel, what was gained, other than making people guilty over their sin? Idk, this whole situation is very strange because you have theological progressives and conservatives dunking on this ad. It's like two rival gangs teaming up lol.

I am disappointed. I like Theo cast a lot. I like the emphasis on not collapsing the categories of law and gospel. I love the 1689 London Baptist confession. I am in a Reformed Church now that is not Baptistic. I Am A Lover of the five Solas and the doctrines of Grace. Certainly we need to speak the truth in love, but we have to speak the truth as we speak in love. I get your points but I think Alistair Begg went too far and should have reconsidered... especially as he was addressed by so many concerned brothers. I thought the he gets us add was also over the top ...we're not washing people's feet in front of Planned Parenthood. Unless we mean that we're sharing the gospel with them and attempting to stop their abortion. I am not trying to be holier than thou I am a filthy miserable dirty rotten sinner, who if he has anything -- has it by the grace of God. I think we need to be careful in our balance of law and gospel not to go off the deep end on either side. God may use winsomeness don't get me wrong, but we're not selling the gospel like it's a used washing machine and we have to be used car salesman to do it. God bless everyone watching and forgive me if I'm wrong. John 6:37

It’s very discouraging at times when not even reformed christians can speak about the same issue the same way. Some are zealous for God’s truth, some focus more on love and compassion, some are more vigilant to the woke/progressive movements. Sadly, this disunity affects our mission in the world. But so be it😢.
@bad_covfefe
@bad_covfefe 9 ай бұрын
That's because Reformed people, like all Protestants, follow traditions of random men with no authority. The assumption that the Bible is clear is false, that's why there is so much disunity. With no authority over who's interpretation to go with, we get a wide shotgun blast of approaches, none being any more valid than the other.

1 Thess 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. My attendance of a gay wedding would give the appearance that I am sanctioning it, thereby giving it my approval.
