The most impressive part of Datysuk is that this is only a tiny fraction of his game. Not only is he tricky and gifted in an offensive way. But he won best defensive player award several times. He was widely regarded as the best thief in the league. Always played both ways (got back on D when a lot of stars would just play O). Even handed out hits at times. On offensive not only is he extremely gifted in dangles, but he was a general, his hockey IQ and seeing the ice was matched by no one. He was extremely unselfish and dished the puck a lot when he could have scored. He’s usually not in peoples top 5. But he is the GOAT in my opinion. If he wanted to, he could have put performed the top 3 that other people like to cite … BUT he is just too well rounded and unselfish of a hockey player to do that. The perfect center man. Datysuk is the GOAT.

I was 3 cars behind him in line at a drive-through once. When I got to the window to pay for my coffee the lady at the window said there was no charge and that it was Pavel Datsyuk who had gone through the line ahead of me. He was named one of the NHL’s 100 greatest players of all time. Sadly he left the nhl before he was ready to retire and nearly every year there are rumors about him returning even though he is over 40 years now because he is still so much more talented than half of the league at his old age. If it wasn't for injuries he would be a 1,000 point player. He also could have put up at least 30 more points a season but he wanted to be the best 2 way player in the game and for many years was the best. He also played the game cleanly. He was the ideal player you would build a team around. He had an accurate shot, great hands, good speed, great skating abilities, and the creativity no one else had. Also had the balls to pull this stuff off in games at crucial moments. No one would dare do the shit he did at the time because they were too afraid of making a mistake. He decided to say fuck it, I'm doing this how I want.

Datsyuk was the best player I’ve ever seen live, I’ve been to hundreds of nhl games and a dozen Olympic Games. I have a game used stick on my wall, it’s 6 feet long and weighs 5 pounds. I’m not being hyperbolic. He did all of this with a tree trunk in his hands. That’s why his stick never broke. Not one time.

I'm 25 years old and I've been a red wings fan since I could form memories. On top of that, Datsyuk has always been my favorite player to watch and cheer for, so this video was a no brainer. You might see some really impressive moves in the future as you dive deeper into the hockey rabbit hole and as the game evolves, but I would argue that you will never see anything quite as creative and organic and fluid as Datsyuk ever again. On a side note though, if you'd like a team to root for I've gotta try and tempt you here: the Red Wings have built themselves a magnificent foundation for the future and will probably be playing winning hockey in the next 5-6 years. Love to see people realize how great the sport is and LGRW!!

Datsyuk is legendary. The closest player today approaching him is Kiril Kaprizov… watch him. Find the game where he literally skates around the entire Avalanche team in their defensive zone while on his skate edges. This is really hard to do for a pro hockey player and sustain acceleration. I think a Cup for Detroit in three years is wayyy too soon of a prediction, especially given how stacked the East is. I don’t think they’ll even be a serious contender in the next three years. That said, the foundation Stevie Y is building is absolutely frightening, especially on the defensive side. Edvinsson will likely be on the blue line with Seider next season, and hopefully the behemoth that is Söderblom can make the lineup this upcoming season as well. In three years our prospect goalie Cossa should be competing for the starting spot, and if Stevie can draft a solid center in this year’s draft, I think we’ll be in a good position to make the playoffs if not this upcoming season, certainly the following season. It all rests on who they hire as head coach to develop our young core. I trust in the Yzerplan, but I can appreciate the virtue of patience. That said, I would love to be proven wrong and see the Wings go on a miracle run and win a Cup in the three years, but the realist in me doesn’t see that happening.

Datsyuk, is definitely all time. It could be argued he would have scored more points if he didn't play so defensively. He was dangerous on any part of the ice, and Mike Babcock usually put him up against the oppositions best to shut them down.

Yeah, Datsyuk was one of many two way forwards the Red Wings had that made them good for a long time. Zetterberg was up there too, as were Fedorov and Larionov. Then they got a bit too reliant on that fact and became kinda crap . . . .

Helm, Dekyser, Nyquist, Tatar, the list goes on and on, had ridiculous contracts for players of their caliber. Not saying they weren't good players, just saying they weren't worth the money that the Wings should have spent on a better player. PS Abdelkader is never a top six forward on any team in the league. Detroit made the mistake of thinking because he had inflated numbers playing on a line with Datsyuk, that he was worth 5 mil a year.

@@rexmcdowd The Red Wings went down hill because their best players aged out. They tried to keep making the playoffs as long as they could, then started to rebuild...see the Chicago Black Hawks. Arguably, they should have found ways to keep some of their draft picks like Jarnkrok and Janmark, which may have help to bolster their depth in their transition (instead of getting F. Nielson or making such crazy signings...Abdelkader for one). GM Holland was quite bad during the cap era during his tenure with the Red Wings...so you are right!

Datsyuk basically was a master at his craft in his era. He is a first ballot hall of famer and he is still playing in his 40s in Russia. He basically inspired the sweet dangles we see today. Some All time goats you should check out in hockey: Gretzky, lemieux, Jagr(still playing), Coffey. Ages vets still playing in the nhl but still are sick crosby, ovechkin. Sick players entering their prime or at their prime: mackinnon (Colorado avalanche) makar (same team), mcdavid, Matthews(Toronto and his shot is insane bro) new young players that are coming are incredible and could take us to even more levels. Checkout it zegra’s “Michigan” or “la crosse” style goal and assist 😂. Dude there’s a bunch of content here on all these dudes to make your jaw drop from anyone of them. Glad you are the beauty in hockey besides just hits and fights. That has its place in the sport too but this is becoming the norm now for most players to come in with a high skill set in the nhl. When you are drafted..only the first 15 picks really have super high expectations of making it to the big squad within 2 years. 20 and beyond are about 3-5 years and most will never even make it to the nhl level or even sign a pro contract. Two of the main reasons that he was such a boss, is because he grew up too poor to initially afford hockey skates, and used regular figure skating ones. This made him a lot more flexible and dexterous than most hockey skaters, who are born into hockey skates. There's a big difference between the two. Additionally, his soccer. I as an American hockey player, generally abhor soccer. And in America week kind of think it's a sissy sport compare to others. But the truth is it takes a lot of cardio, focus, and determination that is just different than hockey. Those two skillsets afforded him the opportunity to do so much more that most players were not able to do until seeing him. It was awesome. One of the times in life, where growing up poor, can have its benefits.

Great vid, loved it! Datsyuk is my favorite player all time. He was just built different and so unconventional. Compared to guys like Kane or McKinnon who do stickhandling aggressively (like five moves per second), Datsyuk was buttery smooth. Only the moves you need but timed and executed perfectly, which just made his opponents look silly. You know, like he used the natural flow and movement of the game. I hear in his youth he was a phenomenal soccer player as well, playing midfield. It kinda makes sense, soccer is a lot about understanding the flow of the game. He was also the best defensive forward of his time, won the award for that 3 times I think. That too, he did by understanding the game and outwitting the opponent. Players of that time say he could sneak up on you, like a proper thief, lift your stick with strength you wouldn't believe from a guy his size, and disappear with the puck. The guy who probably resembles Datsyuk the most in todays NHL is Sasha Barkov. He isn't quite as insane as Datsyuk, but his movement is buttery smooth in the same manner, has that same thieving stick in defensive game, and he deke goalies out of their gear.

What it took for him to get to North America just to play, the things he had to overcome. He has had an amazing trip, Detroit and all of Hockey miss him. For what you said about a layup feeling like time slows down in basketball as a hockey player I totally agree. When you pull off a move and have net to shoot at it feels so calm and just like you got hours to burry it. And if you take a shot you track it through everything and see the spin on it and everything. I was so lucky to have been able to watch him for years. I don't think these highlight reels tell the whole story. Almost every time he was on the ice, he'd do something good. Even if it was small stuff like a good pass or a defensive play, like stealing the puck, he was entertaining in so many ways. He even got better at hitting throughout his career, even though he wasn't a big guy. His consistency alone is why he's one of the all time greats, even if his point totals aren't as high as other hall of famers. The creativity and things he could do to other players was unique.

Red Wings fans were so spoiled for so long. Some of the greatest players of the era played for this team. Watching players like Datsyuk, Zetterberg come up and play together was just a joy. Witnessing Steve Yzerman get drafted and eventually become the greatest captain in the game. Seeing Nik Lidstrom just take control from his very first shift to his last shift. Sergei Fedorov defecting from the Soviet Union to play for Detroit and becoming one of the best players in history. All the stars that came through over the years. We've been struggling for a few years now but now we get to see future stars like Moritz Seider (Calder winner as rookie of the year), Lucas Raymond (also got top 5 votes for Calder) and several kids waiting in the wings.

You should start tuning into the current NHL playoffs as it’s a pretty damn exciting time. Nazem Kadri accidentally injured St. Louis’s goalie(big debate has come abt this)and he ended up receiving racist messages and death threats. He then proceeds to score a hat trick the next night. Connor McDavid, who you already reacted to, is currently on a pretty good playoff run as it’s the furthest he’s ever been.

I have been dreaming about a hockey anime for years now man lol. It does seem like the sport is gaining a little more traction in Japan - their junior team has done pretty well at tournaments lately and a few of those guys look like they could be NHL prospects - so maybe one day!

I think Pavel's best years were when he played with Henrik Zetterberg. There's a video of them making unbelievable plays to each other. It was like they were of one mind the way they just knew what the other was going to do.

I would say he’s the kyrie of hockey when it comes to his offensive game but he’s also a multiple time forward dpoy winner (Selke trophy). There was no holes in his game and he is the reason I started to watch hockey in 2006.

On the topic of sport animes, there's actually a bunch of sport that's been covered by anime shows. Soccer, American Football, Baseball, Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming, Figure Skating, Kart Racing, Boxing (my favourite), Pro Wrestling. I do wish there was a Ice Hockey anime tho.

datysuks plus minus tells how dominant he was in his prime. he was over plus 25 for 4 straight years. he was also the prime focus of both Detroit's power play and penalty kill which are not factored in to that stat... i mean sure Lidstrom... but you'd hardly put Howard or an aging Osgood as top tier goalies
