@@wayfastwhitey2699 I can't quite agree that he has the greatest hockey IQ for the reason that Wayne Gretzky played hockey. Igor Larionov was probably the greatest hockey IQ among Russian born players.

@@dannycarlow8204 It's 100% subjective - and he left it open by saying 'possibly'. It's hard to compare different eras etc. Certainly the best hockey IQ I've ever seen on a consistent basis. Amazing big-brain hockey for sure!

Ronaldinho is a great comparison. Interesting story about how Datsyuk was scouted for the NHL: He was playing in a remote area of Russia, in 1997-1998 before video scouting was really a thing, and it was about a two-day process to get out there. Detroit's scout (Andersson) saw him almost by chance when Andersson was there to see a top prospect playing for Datsyuk's rival team. Datsyuk wowed him. Andersson wanted to go back one more time to see him, and at the airport for the final leg of the flight he saw another NHL team's scout. But there was a big snow storm and the flight was cancelled. As far as Andersson knew, it was unlikely any other NHL team had made the trek out to see Datsyuk. Fast forward a few months to the 1998 NHL draft. Andersson felt so good about Datsyuk that he put a strong word in for him with Detroit's management, and convinced them to select him with their 6th round pick. There are 7 rounds in an NHL draft, and it's rare to get an NHL player in the last couple of rounds let alone a superstar. The rest is history and Datsyuk became a legend.

Pavel is the reason I love hockey. I modeled my game around him and for a guy who isn’t athletic, that play style still got pretty far in my career. He was not only was he incredibly talented on offense but, he was also one of the best defensive forwards to ever play the game. His influence on the game is also underrated. There are so many moves and plays that are common now but weren’t seen before him.

Hey British Ian, I'm an American Ian and a lifelong Red Wings fan. I saw Datsyuk play his entire career and these goals really don't do justice to how much of a menace he was on the ice. He finished his NHL career with 314 goals but also 604 assists, and some of his setups were even more astonishing. His dekes were legendary and his ability to create space under pressure from two or more defenders and still find a teammate was ridiculous. He was a thief, and even if you got the puck off of him, you needed to move it quickly or he was going to steal it back. McDavid, Crosby and Ovechkin were all selected #1 overall in their draft years and were all highly anticipated. Datsyuk was slept on by everyone except the Red Wings and he went a ridiculous 171st overall in the 6th round. There's some compilations of his best dekes and if you really wanna see the Ronaldinho in him it definitely worth watching, even on your own time. :)

This is my home team. I've been watching the Red Wings for 35 year. I saw Datsyuk's first game and last game for the Wings and many in between. I saw many of these highlights live.

Sergei Fedorov has been my favorite player since I watched my first hockey game on tv. As a Canadian, it was quite early in my childhood. I specifically remember the commentators always yelling about the "Russian 5" or "The Red Line". Such an elite squad.

That last move with his leg lift is a lot more complicated than it looks. He was the first player to do that move the way it’s done now very commonly, he uses his left leg to cut in, at a moment when normal skating form would have you forced to cut out. Cutting back to the right the way he does with his left leg had never been seen before in the nhl in 2003 when he scored that goal against Turco in Dallas, and it has changed the way the game is played. His use of his stick to clear other sticks out of the way while guiding the puck with his feet is another thing that was nearly unheard of before Datsyuk, and is incredibly common now

@@british_ian it’s the reason the reaction to that breakaway goal was so unhinged. The goalie just sat down because he was all in on shifting to his right when he saw the fake shot and immediately saw the play going the opposite way, and in some subsequent versions of him doing that move, Vocoun never had a chance, Josh Harding nearly got a pad on it because he saw it coming but Datsyuk went top shelf on him (probably the most beautiful version of the Datsyuk was this one because he had to roof it to score) and then the one against Niemi where niemi read it the whole way (it’s literally his signature move so people caught on, it’s why he rarely did it) and Datsyuk managed to flip it over him. It’s a move that’s probably easier to get away with if you’re not him because when it was him with the puck that move was always in your head.

Yeah, Ronaldinho is a definitely comparable. In fact, Datsyuk played a lot of football growing up and he took a lot of those skills into hockey, especially the one on one moves where he gets his defender completely off balance with his dekes and dangles and change of pace. He was definitely one of the very best 2-way players ever (great offensively and defensively). And his stick handling was magical. There are many highlights of him looking like he's about to be sandwiched and he somehow slips between the defenders and they end up crashing into each other.

In my opinion the playmakers of the NHL show off the true dynamicism and roundedness of the sport as opposed to pure scorers. For those new to the sport, watching the playmaker on the ice and seeing where he is at all times can give you a great sense of the rhythms of the game because much like soccer, positioning of players without the puck is actually what determines the outcome of most plays. Understanding this constant ebb and flow of the game is what truly unlocks hockey as a wonderful sport to even just watch. Pavel is a prime example of this and this is why he’s my favorite player of all time. Many laud him as one of the greatest stick handlers of all time; but many in history rival him in that aspect. Where he truly excels is the constant use of space and timing to create several layers of deception on every play, making him lethal for possession of the puck in both the defensive and offensive ends of the ice. Voted by NHL players of his time the “hardest to take the puck away from”. Great video and glad to see your enthusiasm for the greatest sport on earth!

Great analysis. I always thought his real strength was his movement in limited spaces. He had a genius for both finding and creating space in tight areas. I say this as a life long Wings fan who watched him both live and on the screen over many years. He was one of the best two way players I've ever seen.

He did so much more than just score goals. His defense and ability to avoid or give hits instead of getting hit was awesome to see.

To be fair, Pavel Datsyuk was not the first to score a shootout goal like in the #6 highlight. It was first done by Linus Omark the year before while playing for Team Sweden in an international tournament. In hockey, "dribbling" is called "stickhandling." More dramatic moves to evade a defender are called "dangles" (as if there's an invisible string connecting the puck to the blade of the stick). What I find most impressive is that these elite players are not looking down at the puck. Their heads are up to see their playmaking options, and also to watch out for hits (there's an old hockey cliche: "keep your head up, or someone will try to remove it").

No but it was special because he did the Datsyuk move the same way he had his whole career and this was the only time a goalie actually managed to keep up with it. Datsyuk only ever actually did “the Datsyuk” about 4 times in his career, and he was 4 for 4 when doing it, he hadn’t missed. This one niemi should have had him and he last minute flipped it up, not as a planned move. So that one in particular stands out as one of those moments I saw live and was once again reminded that Datsyuk is beyond special.

Pavel Datysuk was a great goal scorer, but honestly, the "magic man" title is because of his puck skills. His ability to keep the puck, with most players, and at any speed is absolutely insane. Hockey players do not give up, they keep pressing and trying. if they give half effort, they find themselves on the bench missing their next shift which is the most embarrassing thing for a hockey player. They don't lay there with their hands in the air complaining or looking for. A foul call...they keep going. Different type of athlete all together. People think it's all fighting but they are so wrong. I if anyone has never watched a game. Watch on and enjoy the magic.

As a Red Wings fan, it was a joy to watch Pavel. He was unbelievable. Would love to see your reaction to Brawl at Hockeytown. It was an epic game between Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings. There were a record number of penalties and, in fact, the animosity between those 2 teams continued for 10 years. It was something to see.

This is surprising, but if it were not for the draft, Datsyuk would have remained useless in Russia as well. Nobody ever knew about him. He was not invited to the central clubs; he did not play for the national team then. And then the case and Datsyuk became a member of the Golden Club (Stanley Cup + Olympics + World Championship) and there are only 30 such players in the world today

I highly suggest checking out Evgeni Malkin, another excellent Russian hockey player. He was drafted 2nd overall in 2004 right after Ovechkin, and often overlooked because he plays with Sidney Crosby. Some of his highlights are absurd, he’d be seen as another generational superstar if he played for another team. Sid is more known for his play making skills, while Malkin has the dangles and shots like Datsyuk and Ovi.

Henrik was a better scorer and an excellent passer but he wasn't near equal to Pavel as a defensive forward. Together on the ice as linemates they were a fearsome combination however. Once the torch passed from the Yzerman Fedorov era they were as good a top line as any in the league. Opposing teams hated facing them. Their back to back cup finals against the Crosby Malkin led Penguins was some fine Stanley Cup finals giving us two great 7 game series.

Since hockey became a professional sport, it has been dominated by Canadian players. Hockey is a Canadian sport. The US is starting to pick up on it now, but that's a recent development.
