When I saw Sergei Federov passing to teammates over opponents sticks and scoring 50+ goals a season I knew I was seeing something special. When I saw Pavel Datsyuk do the same thing I instantly recognized we had found an amazing player. Datsyuk's puck control was unmatched, but he didn't get the 50+ goal seasons of his predecessors due to a few differences in team build and his defensive play style. If you want to see some eye popping scoring and puck control watch some Sergei Federov (especially with the Russian 5: Larionov, Konstantinov, Kozlov, Federov, and Fetisov). The final piece to the Russian 5 cost us big, trading Ray Sheppard who was another 50+ goal scorer to get Larionov, but Larionov was the missing ingredient to make everything blend perfectly together.

Pavel "The Magic Man" Datsyuk was the greatest "TWO-WAY PLAYER" to ever play in the NHL! He stole more pucks than any other player! The mere fact that all other teams slept on him and the Red Wings snatched him up 171st overall is a testament to how good their scouting was and still is so much better that any other team in the NHL! Watch out for the Red Wings this next season. Trust in the #Yzerplan! #LGRW

Supposedly, the story goes, and this is all from memory so forgive me if I might not have every detail totally accurate, I heard this many years ago; the night the Red Wings long time European & Russian Super-scout Hakken Andersson discovered Pavel Datsuyk - (he also discovered Henrik Zetterburg, Nicklas Lidstrom & Sergi Federov) - he was in St. Petersburgh Russia to scout 2 other players, Datsuyk was playing his first game at that level of pro hockey in Russia and Andersson had not ever heard of Datsuyk. Andersson says from moment one in that game he couldn't take his eyes off Datsuyk. He said Datsuyk was by far the best player on the ice but he was only 5'-7" and 160lbs way to small it was thought to compete in the NHL. Andersson let the Red Wings know about this prodigiously talented two-way forward and the Red Wings ended up drafting him, and he grew a bit in the meantime. IMHO Datsuyk is a top 20 all time player and he should be in the Hall of Fame when he is eligible.

@@samchaudhary7743 honestly hockey is one of those sports where some of your best players are ones that you don’t realize are gonna be that for you until like 5 years in. Then all of a sudden they’re absolutely unstoppable or sometimes it’s just immediate. Some players game just translates better to the nhl kinda thing which is dope but also in other equations it can be bad. For example , I’m sure there’s some amazing players out there who just aren’t right for the minors or Europe leagues. The play is definitely a lot different. Those players although they aren’t great there could be amazing in the nhl for a long time but just never get the chance

He is one of the best ever stickhandler's, he could keep the puck away from you in a telephone booth. He has insane game sense, he just knows where to put the puck and where/how people will try to take it from him. He was #1 for takeaways in the NHL (stealing the puck from an opponent's control) while he played, it is now owned by the big Joe Thornton who is also an NHL legend.

You know a dude's special if he invents a move that's named after him. He demonstrated "The Datsyuk" a few times in those highlights where he goes in alone on a breakaway or shootout, fakes a shot, then drags the puck past the fallen goalie and shoots into the open net. A bunch of players use that move now and it's very effective.

Bro the stories I’ve heard are unreal. I’ve unfortunately not got to see him live , but growing up my neighbor was Daniel cleary and he played with him on the red wings and after he brought the cup home , he told some wild stories about when he played with pavel. He said that pavel is by far the most obsessive player he’s ever played with and also like you said just insanely fast but doesn’t even look it unless you really see it in person. I can only imagine how it looked at a practice 😂😂

@@helmedon he was just faster overall but not in a straight line. He was very smooth and consistent and had insane edge work so through the moves he was doing , although he wasn’t hard to keep up with just going straight , tryna chase him was probably an absolute nightmare.

Most elusive player to ever lace em up. Eventually the league stopped even trying to play his stick, but if defenseman tried to play his body, they ended up with their butt on the ice, as seen He grew up in a very remote village in Russia. He said there were only a few pucks in the village, and the kids would all just play keepaway. As a former defenseman, he would have driven me nuts like I swear coach I had him squared up then he was just gone haha

Ice Hockey, this modern version, and Basketball, Baseball and Football were all invented by Canadians. As a Canadian, who grew up playing hockey and as a proud fan, you are welcome! and you can have basketball! This rough style of hockey is Canadian Hockey. It is the reason why Canada is the dominate hockey nation in the world - more than twice as many intetnational wins/medals than the next closest country - Russia. Thankfully, some US players and leagues have adopted the Canadian style of hockey and avoid the European Style of hockey. The NHL was a Canadian league that expanded into the USA. Historically, most NHL players are Canadian, but that has dropped from almost 100% down to 50% today. Even hockey teams in the USA are half Canadian players or more. Hockey pucks are vulcanized rubber that are frozen for game use, reduces bouncing of puck. Pucks are shot at average speeds of 88 mph up to about 110 mph. The glass is 1/2 inch thick safety glass. The boards, can move a little, but are not padded and are boards, hard. Body and Hip checks are legal providing 1) the head is not the initial point of contact 2) you can't your elbow or knee, 3) you don't hit people from behind, on the numbers on back of jersey and 4) hip checks must be above the knee. Hockey players move at speeds of up to 28 mph and collisions between two players can occur at over 50 mph. Even though hockey players are app 20% smaller than NFL players, NHL Hockey hits are known to be over 20% harder than NFL or rugby. Then they land on ice or are smashed into boards - lol can't run out of bounds, in hockey, to avoid getting hit. You are not allowed to hit anyone with your stick, unless it was a follow- through on a shot. Fighting is illegal and results in at least a 5 min penalty or more. Fighting usually results in response to a dirty play/player - retribution and punishment - see ' the code' Hockey players do not stay down unless they are really hurt, normally they pop back up and keep playing - other sports could LEARN from this Most common hockey injuries are stitches and loosing teeth aka 'spitting chicklets' - when this happens, hockey players don't usually even miss a shift Hockey players play through the pain on broken legs, broken feet, broken jaws, noses and facial bones. If at all humanly or inhumanly possible, hockey players finish their shift, the game and the series. Ice Hockey is rated as the SECOND most difficult and tough sport, just behind boxing. Less than a 1% difference between the two. It is followed by football, mma....but who really cares about that. Each game is a full 60 minutes, made up of three 20 min periods. The clock is stopped when game play is halted. The NHL regular season is 82 games ( also has pre-season) and Stanley Cup Playoffs where you must win '4' best of 7 series, hence a minimun of 16 games to a maximum of 28 games played! An entire football season just to win the cup! Hence, it is the hardest trophy in professional sports to win! Finally, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE PLAY-OFF HOCKEY!
