Hi, one of the wealthiest slave owners was black. Many of the slave men when freed bought slaves to work for them. Some to raise money to buy their wife and children. There was some interracial marriages as well. I have a relative who did ten years servitude because he owed a 26.00 gambling debt in England. That was a lot of money back then.

I am a 72 year old Black man, who does not support reparations. A good deal of what this brother said was not true. Almost 200,000Black men served in the union army, over 30,000 gave their lives. Fredrick Douglas, pleaded with Lincoln to allow Black's to fight in the Civil War. As a matter of fact Black men begged to fight for this country in every war up until the Korean war. Also George Washington did not allow Black's to fight until their backs were against the wall. Many of the Black's were betrayed and turned back into slavery after the war. What he said about the freed slaves turning down land opportunities is unbelievable. I hope this brother does better research in the future.

And if, it were not foreseeable possible Sacramento California wouldn't be relentlessly focusing on getting a bill passed for "REPARATIONS.". That part. I never knew that the freed people were offered 150 acres of land, work it for 5 years and then own it and pass it down to future descendants for the rest of forever. Why didn't more people accept that deal? Was there a hidden catch not mentioned ? I think its research time. Edit : Just going to add some context : The land wasn't free, people had to pay $18 for "Filing Charges" (paperwork) in order to make a claim on land. Also this was called the Homestead Act of 1862. The act was repealed in 1976. It basically said that Americans had the opportunity to claim upto 160 acres of land as long as they worked the land, lived on it and kept it for a minimum of 5 years. The last chunk of land was claimed in Alaska by a Californian guy, 80 acres worth in 1988.

@hankdetroit2076, your clever logic only deflect a legitimate demand. Only way America can truly be repentant of its heinous history of slavery is to pay reparation to the descendants of enslaved people. To do this is to show truthful remorse in both action and deed.

30% of the freed blacks in the South, owned slaves. Some of them fought with the Confederacy for the right to own slaves. How's that going to work, some black guy working now as a plumber's going to get a bill? Give me a break.

Was watching a documentary on the Civil War. Many Union forces went to war to preserve the Union. When they got to the south and saw real slavery and brutality many were now going to war against slavery in the Confederacy because of what they actually saw.
