From a book The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... The Song of Achilles retells the events of Homer’s Iliad told from the perspective of Patroclus. The book reimagines the relationship between ancient Greek Trojan war heroes Achilles and Patroclus. The novel follows Patroclus' relationship with Achilles, from their initial meeting to their exploits during the Trojan War, with a particular focus on their romantic relationship.

When I think of Achilles' love I think of figs, an olive crown, golden curls mingling with dark brown locks. When I think of Achilles' rage I think of a spear piercing through metal, flesh, and bone. A blood and dirt-stained face only interrupted by dark mossy eyes. I think of a lion and it's prey. And I think of golden curls gathered, ripped out, and falling onto the chest of a fallen lover.

I just realized that when they were younger, Patroclus was easily carried away with rage, envy, and pride. Not until him meeting Achilles, whose warmth melts every hatred and loneliness he has, steps in. "He smiled, and his face was like the sun." Patroclus saw Achilles as the light that brought him out of the darkness. A companion that assured him he never had to walk alone. And a lover that accepted all his imperfections. However, as they grow older. We can see how the picture suddenly flipped. Achilles turned out to be the one conquered by hatred and pride, while Patroclus became everyone's sunshine. Achilles was cutting throats, Patroclus heals through his words. In spite of all, in spite of Achilles' earthquakes and mistakes: Patroclus' love accepted him, whole. And when the time came that Patroclus begged his lover to fight, joined the war, killed a demigod, and died---we saw how a part of Achilles died inside as well. To him, Patroclus was sunshine and he was midnight rain. To conclude, it made me realize how they are both each other's light whenever one goes astray. Achilles' attitude towards that end may be upsetting, but that only strongly hints that despite of being a demigod, he is more of a human. And he took accountability for his wrong choices, grieving for his Philtatos, most beloved, Patroclus. Indeed, the characters were imperfect, but it is their flaws that emphasize the art of being human. That these imperfections are nothing compared to the perfect love they have for each other, even in the afterlife. "In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood, like a hundred golden urns pouring out the sun." Patroclus and Achilles' love is boundless and everlasting, no one compares.

I finished this book recently and I haven't been able to move on to another book since. The memories of Achilles and patroclus back in phthia when they sat on the beach, patroclus admired him while he played the lyre and watched him lovingly while he slept, their happy days filled with laughter in pelion, and then achilles seeing patroclus dead and keeping his body in his tent with him holding it all night, achilles later dying with a smile on his face, their ashes mingled and buried together and then them finally reuniting in the underworld with no war or death to separate them ever. I try hard not to think about them or the book, but it's just not possible. I wish the time had stopped for the whole world except them when they were in Pelion together having the best time of their life and Achilles would still be the innocent & modest Achilles rather than the proud & heartless Achilles :(

SPOILER: I think the thing that breaks my heart the most is that it was Achilles’ ego that really killed Patroclus. He put his reputation above everything else, ignoring all the warnings and allowed Patroclus to go into battle. Achilles had spent his whole life since meeting Patroclus protecting him and ensuring, no matter what, they would be together. But when it came to it, he sent him away leaving him to die alone. He ignored Patroclus’ begging, ignoring his pleas and basically killed him.

I think you can't describe achillies honor and what it meant to him as "ego". To the people who lived back then honor meant more than to us now. Our preception of that concept has changed drastically. I really love that about achillies character in soa. Madeline Miller doesn't change his values to make him a more likable character to us, readers from another time period.

"The gods wished to punish him" Chiron answered. Achilles shook his head, impatiently. "But this was a greater punishment for her. It was not fair of them." I notice that a lot of us readers in the comment section are mad at Achilles. They are mad at him because he basically sent Patroclus to his death. Well... that is understandable. There's nothing wrong about being mad. But there is wrong in hating him for it. Maybe...maybe he was mad at himself when it happened. Maybe he hated himself afterwards. Maybe some of that grief and pain we see when Patroclus died was Achilles realizing that it wasn't Patroclus that did it himself but Achilles that did it to him. Imagine a half of your soul dying because of your own pride? Would you have felt those same emotions? Yes. You would have. You would have been torn apart, utterly torn apart. You might have raged, as Achilles done, wept as he did. You might have destroyed and killed and ravaged, as he did. You might have felt the desire for life fade away, like there was nothing more to live for. Like he did. Then, after he finally passed, he still wasn't with Patroclus. Neither could rest until, finally, Achilles's mother added Patroclus's name to the monument. Taking pity on them. It was only then they could be reunited. Only then they could rest. Think about this. Remember that every decision we make, every word we speak, never affects only us. There is at least one other person whose life will be altered. We never see the true effects we make in others.

I have done it," she says. At first I do not understand. But then I see the tomb, and the marks she has made on the stone. A C H I L L E S, it reads. And beside it, P A T R O C L U S. "Go," she says. "He waits for you." In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.

It hurt me too much to read the part where Patroclus was compared to Cleopatra. The parallels are almost identical, it hurts me to read the paragraphs of desperate patroclus over the war. It was profound to read how he crouched down and begged Achilles through tears.
