9:00 I completely agree that the industry is slow to adapt. Most artists aren't considering direct-to-fan approaches, and the average artist doesn't think like a business, often being five years behind the best strategies for growing their music business.

Kenny has said openly he isn’t a “business guy” and doesn’t want to be tho. If you can’t find a way to monetize as an artist, then you’re probably really not savvy because there’s so many ways.

A beatmaker makes a beat on a daw and "leases thr beat for $25. The vocalist pays $25 for an mp3 beat lease records vocals then pays distributor to submit to streaming sites the vocalists needs 5,000 streams on that song just to break even on thr lesser and distributor cost. The beatmaker though could spend nothing have a laptop already in possession for work or school use cracked daw download free soundsets or loops and make the Beat with those thrn sell thr lenses from a free Instagram account. Thst aspect alone shows money is in selling to recording artists not being one.

If you break down the statement, he's not right, but he's onto something. I mean, obviously, there are people MORE stupid, but to his point if you're talking SOLELY off of the sale of music, I'd have to agree. If you treat yourself like an influencer and youre selling brand while utilizing music to build the brand you sell, then I'd strongly disagree with him if he considered selling a music brand the same as selling music as a product. But selling music as the product isn't a smart move.

@tooneov
@tooneov 3 ай бұрын
@doyadirty3804 No, I agreed with him if his statement is clarified. I've managed 3 diff platinum artists and producers, none of them thought of themselves as brand first. And we did in fact sell millions of records and make millions off of music alone through streaming royalties, up front placement fees, and publishing on movies and video games. But to get there requires the stars to align and only 0.10% of people will see that. I've worked with plenty other artists that made a living as an artist but it wasn't specifically their music that created the income it was the brand as a whole and the influence that we could monetize. It's not common sense to most. And depending on what he actually meant by his statement he could be completely wrong. It's way harder to sell actual music these days, but it's way easier to sell everything else with way less overhead, staff and moving parts.

The brand you sell IS YOUR MUSIC and you can get rich of Streaming that was a dumb statement HE MADE because you realize this guy isn’t independent at all and has been splitting his money with probably 5 ppl maybe 10

@tooneov
@tooneov 3 ай бұрын
@djyua9157 the brand you sell is yourself as an influencer. The music is one product, not the whole brand. Back in the day the music was on cd format or tape, or record. They sold for $10-$15 at the store. If you had a deal, maybe you got $1 out of the $15 for every album sold and the label got maybe $8, retailer $3, distributor maybe $3. so the actual selling of music was a viable business model. Now, streaming esp as someone not signed to a huge label is a loss leader because the streams pay so little that it's not a viable business model and it's not sustainable unless you're going platinum.

He’s basically saying do it for the love in an extreme way. He’s elaborated on this further before. What he’s really saying is “if you are getting into music to just make money that’s dumb” because the return investment isn’t enough and 9 times out of 10 in these times; “doing it for money” may let you catch a few lucky hits MAYBE, but it’s the people who have love in their labor that outlast everyone else and eventually makes the most money anyway. Tyler is a great example of this. Obviously he is in the pursuit of cash but you can tell he genuinely loves music and being creative and it has rewarded he a long successful career and a loyal cult fanbase.

AI in 24-36 months is going to void this whole conversation. Electronic based musicians are about to feel the wrath of advancing technology. So yes, if you are solely motivated by the potential to gain riches in this industry would definitely be a foolish endeavor.

Electronic musicians can benefit a lot from advancing technology - the key is ‘How is the artist using technology? And is the artist using advancing technology as a solution to some of the problems they are currently experiencing?’ Like sure, there’s a good chance AI music could steal streaming time away from the current pool of electronic musicians … but that’s just ‘Music Retail’ (one source of revenue). There’s still EVENTS - which is how artist’s make most of their money anyway. The problem with events are: Fronting startup capital to generate profits during the tour is difficult (it’s the business side of the industry which is tricky so stay attentive :) The amount of startup money it takes to tour is difficult to raise as well - given there’s a high chance to lose money touring because of - rising travel expenses - merch cuts at big venues - scalping which ultimately leads to expensive ticket prices (which sucks for the concertgoers) So again, the question is … how can advancing technology solve some the problems listed above? One way is actually right in front of us - we just need to remember what musicians were doing in 2020- 2021. And what is that?? Answer: Live-streaming ** LIVE music organizers ** There’s other ways to host a show. Like for example: Pay artists to Perform (LIVE FROM HOME). Book artists virtually by purchasing their LIVE A/V signals for a couple of hours (Zoom Video/ListenTo by Audiomovers). Mix these a/v signals onsite at a physical venue with a projector and sound system, and charge to get in). Meaning, Pay artist to Work From Home, while the event organizers handle the venue thats screening the show for a paying audience (remember, there’s no travel involved for the artist so ticket sales to see your favorite artists will always remain so much cheaper to see them virtually at a physical venue) Think ‘Moment House’ being a physical venue. So yes, technology is advancing so fast that it might hurt ‘Music Retail’ but again - advancing technology can certainly aid the touring industry. It’s a DIY world out there … it’s an open market you just need to stay creative. Being tech savvy is really important these days. Best of luck out there everyone✌️

People that play basketball because thdy love it don't all expect or want a try out for the NBA but for some reason ever since ITunes through tunecore first started letting the public submit music to iTunes store for a fee now everybody that makes music on a daw st home for some reason thinks thry are supposed to have the music equivalent of an NBA try out. Music is the only home based hobby where people of even the smallest bit of skill or talent submits their work to the same storefront as professionals. People act like making music I pointless if you don't try to make it a business. The same people don't hassle video game hobbyists thst play video games 12 hours per day on work day off. I've seen it for years and years though thst the $$ is in selling products and services to music hobbyist instead of making the music and releasing it.
