Chris I had the same problem. I solved it by hanging a 1.5"x 1.5" piece of wire fencing below the pen floor on chains with a bell attached to it. The critters can't reach the pen floor or birds and the bell scares them off.

I had the same problem with raccoons. They could get on top as well and ate 17 out of 19 eggs one night (collected and forgot to bring them in....I guess they ate until they were full!)And they killed a quail the same way the fox did , through the bottom wire. I put electric poultry netting around an entire area, and that seems to have helped. No other incursions since then.

A friend of mine did a double layer of cage under her hutch she says the poop still falls through but predators can't get their paws up in there Your trick maybe the fox will learn that the posom is better food lol

A few days ago I went out in the morning to find all 7 of my Coturnix Quail just gone. The cage was closed. No damage. Only some feathers on the ground in the front of the cage. I had been using a 2' X 4' standard wire rabbit cage for almost a year and a half. It sat on top of two tall plastic trash cans that was secured into the ground, and had a couple layers of heavy tarp on the roof and mostly covering the back and sides. The quail poop and sand/dirt from their sand boxes went into the trash cans which I would use for fertilized soil for the garden. Whatever they were, somehow grabbed the quail against the front of the cage, killed them, and pulled them straight through the cage wire, which is no easy feat. I don't understand how they got all 7, but maybe they were there for hours. Most likely raccoons I assume. My plan is to cover the cage with hardware cloth so the gaps are way too small and start over within the next month. Very disappointing.

I notices you don't use a double bottom when we built our rabbit and bird cages we would put the flor wire on top of the 2x4s and small chicken wire under the 2x4. so all our cages have basically 2 floors under them some we did with both rabbit wire on both sides, but the chicken wire was easier to clean.

If you're in the country get a big bore pellet gun, and a small game permit from you dnr, then either taxidermy it, tan it and make a liner for a jacket for your sweetie, or a scarf When the electric wire quits working, foxes are smart little dogs

Get a motion sensor alarm at Harbor F $20 It is wireless and the batteries last a long time. If it is long distance , like 300 yards , lengthen the antenna wire , is a fix for extra distance, is what I've heard. don't run with your gun!

You’re right! You will have to clean up more often and change bedding but personally for me it’s worth it. I am so glad I found this video because now I am thinking to build a “cage or run” around the hutch to prevent animals from walking to the hutch, basically a cage within a cage. I do not own quail yet but I will soon.

I always put electric mesh safety fence around any area with outdoor pens in it. Learned the hard way. rats and mink are the worst.... too dang smart. watch baiting with tin fiol and penut butter on the electric fence. You'll stir up one heck of a stink when you get a skunk

Predator problems are an ongoing problem for me, I keep a baited live trap out at all times and a game cam up. Couple of weeks ago I caught 2 coons and 2 possums. Got pics of another coon and another possum last night, will have them removed this week I'm sure. I had to build my cages very secure from the get go because I knew this would be an issue. Haven't lost any yet, knock on wood.
