As someone that dated one of their friends, there’s a certain element of worry when it comes to telling everyone you know. Some people will think it’s a bad idea and won’t be very supportive, sometimes other friends get jealous and it causes problems. Sometimes other friends also like the friend. Plus once other people know then that leaves room for interference etc etc. so I fully understand Monica and chandler not wanting to jump straight to telling everyone, especially so early into the relationship. I also really resonate with phoebes struggle with the fur coat, I’m the same way. It’s so beautiful and soft but I know where it came from and I know how they got it and I know that it’s morally tapped to wear somethings skin 🥲

"it's fun telling people when you're in a situation like that" I would find it terrifying given that they're all in a tight knit friend group. It would be so weird, especially considering you won't know exactly how everyone will react initially.

They also see the whole Ross and Rachel mess. They might be worried how group will react to another possible drama.

I think Monica and Chandler don't want to tell everyone right away probably because it's new and exciting and they want to keep inside their own bubble for a while. And if it goes badly early on they can deal with it without outside input whereas if they don't work out early on into their relationship and everyone knew, it might cause some problems and people in the group will have opinions about it
@quimeymalen5 ай бұрын
Also, considering everything that's going on with Ross and Rachel, plus the past with that guy Kip and Monica, I suppose it's just normal for them trying to preserve their relationship in the beginning until they feel safe and confident without letting the external drama get in the way.
@Dazzlefae5 ай бұрын
Yeah. At the end of the day, their friendship is more important to them. They've seen Ross and Rachel get together and break up and it had lasting effects on the entire group. There was that entire length of time where they had to do things with one of them at a time and they were both kinda competing for their attention and fighting whenever they were in the same room. They hated that. They all hated that. They're not gonna want to risk putting everyone through that again. They're not gonna want to risk having everyone take sides. They just want to figure out what they are to each other without getting everyone else's opinions on it. It's their relationship and the second everyone in the group knows, it's everyone's relationship.
@bch79055 ай бұрын
Tbf *SPOILER* . . . . When they do all eventually learn about it, Ross is in a fury until he finds out Chandler and Monica actually love each other...and they don't get there until that episode, so they were, in their words, worried about how he would take the news considering all that's been going on. Also once everyone knows and accepts it, they tease Chandler about commitment and it almost scares him off. Fortunately by then him and Monica were together long enough and admitted that they were in love, so the resolution was quick albeit not without Chandler doing something a bit nutty first. They really did need the time to feel their relationship out first and build confidence on their own which is valid because both of them have huge insecurities esp when it comes to longterm relationships.

This is why Chandler and Monica have a much healthier dynamic than Ross and Rachel ever had. They do mess up, but they communicate and work it out without resentment/grudges. They are willing to take accountability and move forward. They will always be my favourite couple on the show and it baffles me when people root for Ross and Rachel. As much as they love each other, it’s toxic and I think it shows how normalised it is and accepting we are of harmful behaviour in relationships just because of love. Love isn’t enough when people are hurting each other repeatedly, even unintentionally.

Fun fact: the actress who plays Emilly was pregnant around that time and she couldn't be in the show anymore and the writers didn't know how to get her outta the show, and David (Ross) in one scene the own actor accidentally said rachel instead of emilly it "wasnt" scripted, I mean it was in the weeding scene but David accidentally called emilly "Rachel" and the writters had the brilliant idea of Ross saying the wrong name at the altar, funny how if David Schwimmer hadn't call Emily Rachel we actually could never had the iconic moment in the altar, maybe they would get rid of her with her cheating on him or getting pregnant and he not being the father or something idk But Imo the worst mistake was bringing her back to the show, they should've just get rid of her and that's it, instead they brought her back and made her so possessive and made Ross such loser doing everything she commended him to do like a puppy doggy... I didnt like that tho, btw Ross is in a rampage this season

I'm not 100% sure if this is true or not, but apparently Chandler and Monica dating was only supposed to be in London, but the original audience of the show liked their relationship so much that they added it into the show at least that's what I heard I don't know if it's true but if it is that's pretty cool that if it wasn't for the original audience we wouldn't have Chandler and Monica who in my opinion are not just the best relationship in friends but one of the best relationships depicted on television. It happens so often that like with Rachel and Ross, creators of TV shows never know what to do with their characters once they actually enter into a relationship and it's really hard to depict a happy healthy relationship on screen where they might fight but still stay together Breaking up as more drama, there are so many depictions on television where there to any problem is just a break up the characters and get them back together and with friends they were the first show that I can think of that did the break up and get back together but properly a happy healthy relationship that was long lasting where the characters never broke up. I also think that Monica and Chandler are a great reverse to Rachel and Ross, Rachel and Ross break up and get back together so many times throughout the show that it just becomes less and less interesting and you're no longer really rooting for them to get back together because they break up too many times that it just doesn't feel worth it and it feels like too much damage has been done whereas with Chandler and Monica they get together and they never break up they stay together throughout the entirety of the show and that is the best picture, with the next being Lillian Marshall and I met your mother who did one time, making Chandler and Monica the better relationship because not only do they depict a healthy happy relationship but they show ways of actually writing in storylines for their relationship without having to have characters break up or fight all the time which I really like, as like I said this isn't often depicted in TV or movies, because a lot of time those storylines are boring but friends makes it interesting and it's always great to see happy proper relationships depicted as opposed to ones that are unhealthy like with Rachel and Ross and it's even funnier that both relationships are depicted in friends. Of course this is just my opinion and you may have a different one but I always found it really interesting thatunlike other TV shows that will always break up characters for plot friends well doing this trope also are able to show a relationship and actually come up with ideas for external conflict rather than internal conflict between the two characters allowing Chandler and Monica to still be together.

As a Brit, thank you for pointing out the American way of saying squirrel - (phonetically: skwrl). 😛 I think Emily's request that Ross stop seeing Rachel is one most people would make (right or wrong, that's realistic and I can understand why). Emily's anxieties increased in Episode 6 to a level of paranoia though, which can't have been helped by the fact that they're in a different country to Ross, and that's the point where I think one of them needed to realise the relationship was over. I believe most fans outright hate Emily, which I don't think is fair. Emily clearly loved Ross and was trying to find a way to trust them. It's easy for us to say they just need to break up, but when both parties are invested in the relationship, that isn't a call people would easily make. Just look at the number of people who stay with partners after cheating. Is it logical? No, but decisions of love rarely are.

Something that really bothered me when it came to Ross and Emily is after he said Rachel's name instead of Emily's name at the altar why did they continue to get married, I realise that that is the drummer of the show but it would've made way more sense for Ross to then say I'm sorry Emily I still have feelings for Rachel then he wouldn't have to worry about getting a second divorce because they wouldn't have gotten married in the first place or even getting a mould would be better than getting a divorce I don't know why Ross is so worried about getting a divorce when I don't even think he slipped with Emily so couldn't they just annul their relationship, also Again it would've made way more sense for them to not go through with the relationship in the first place after he said the wrong name because then he wouldn't have to worry about ending his friendship was Rachel he wouldn't have to worry about being divorced for the second time and it may not make interesting storytelling I feel like it would just better end the relationship and end the storyline if they just left it there at the altar at the end of season four, but again this is just my opinion you may have different ones, I just feel that it was kind of ridiculous, especially when Ross shouldn't worry too much about his first marriage given that while they did have a child together and were able to consummate their marriage, she ended up being a lesbian in the end so he can't really blame himself for that surely, either way I find the whole thing with Emily Rachel and Ross to be so ridiculous by season five that it just bugs me it's still going on when the easiest solution would've been for him to just say you know what let's not get married now but he just had to push through and it ended up ruining things for him in the end, this is one of the reasons why I think a lot of people don't really like Ross, not only does not think things through but he is so obsessed with his image etc that it causes so many problems for him later down the road.

I remember watching the original broadcast run of the whole thing in the '90s here in The States, on Thursday evenings every September through May. Yes, I'm ancient, LOL. Still enjoy these characters today; and I learned that it's best to watch this sitcom on DVD, because those discs have loads of little jokes and exchanges that are not available on streaming or blu-ray versions. My only peeve with Friends, and it's a big one, is that the writers often engaged in transparently manipulative story-lines designed simply to make viewers wince or roll our eyes about the whole ridiculous Ross/Rachel thing. Really, how many times can you make Rachel and Ross star-crossed? It's too much. And then having Emily insist on those stupid conditions--- that nearly turrned me off completely to the show. But I dismissed the inane writing and enjoyed the fun that was there outside of the endless romantic soap opera the show had become. 😆Seriously, overall it is a very funny series, one of the decade's best, and consistently good across its ten seasons.

I had a really crappy bad go of it this week, culminating yesterday to dragging ass home defeated and downtrodden. Then fishing through the feed I found my ray of light in your thumbnail of Joey Tribianie with the all caps caption: HE KNOWS! Instantly, all was right with the universe. Nothing turns things around, flips the script, rights the ship and produces a reversal of ones fortunes than the absolute dopamine hits that is season 5 and protracted in the best way season long one by one super secret friend group gaining knowledge of the under wraps covert Chandler Monica relationship that builds to the greatest crescendo of episodes in sitcom history. No spoilers: here's the deal just so you know the absolute place you are in at this series juncture. The moment the first episode returns from commercial break and Joey interrogates Chandler about the hotel calling about a left behind lipstick, the show Friends that has been arguably one of the most consistently produced absorbing shows ever put to television, at that exact moment, goes full nos, through the stratosphere, transcending the space time continuem and becoming from that point on till the end of its run season 10 like a non stop greatest hits compilation highlight reel of best series moments .... but it's every show and literally every line hits and are from this point on all quotable. It's crazy but true. The show enters a crazy insane level of quality very rare. But season 5 is majorly considered the greatest season because of this incredibly long sustained joke keeping the group in the dark that one by one all find out till it all hits the fan so satisfying and perfect in its execution, it would serve as a blueprint for outlines of future seasons not just for this show, but sitcoms across the board. Friends was ground breaking in that they broke a decades long held industry myth a sitcom couldn't tell a season long story arc as it would hurt syndication and order of the episodes airing. Turns out, didn't hurt reruns in the least and actually led to longer watching commitments to reruns to rewatch entire season long story arc. Friends broke one glass ceiling of conventional Hollywood wisdom.

No. Monica doesn't get to play victim after changing room after room after room, and then get mad at Chandler because he's focused on the wrong thing. bffr

Mmm I see what you’re saying, I think they both could have been a little more focused on each other, but just keep in mind that it wasn’t about what they were doing, it was about the intent. Chandler was completely distracted and not focusing on the reason they were there. And as much as Monica was focusing on something equally as trivial, she was doing it in order to create a perfect night for them both. Her big love language is acts of service and she was trying to create something special for them. 🤷♂️ it’s all in the intention.

I hate when people are annoyed at Emily because even though she was kinda extreme she had every right after what was done to her. And is not like it was only Ross, she was right not to trust Rachel too. She literally went all the way to her wedding to try to ruin it and still was trying after the honeymoon. Like she was so fair for it all.

This would probably hurt harder for Rachel, because she knows last time the group was in a position to try to choose between her and Ross they all chose Ross So he’s basically gonna kick her out of her friend group again Just like when they broke up and everybody had to feel so bad for Ross and make sure Ross was OK even though he’s the one that fucked up
