Mark, you sold me on retiring and moving to the Philippines 2 years ago with your advice to us to "stop paying with your lives" working the last few years to maximize your SSA benefits and pull the trigger on retirement in the Philippines. I've been here for nearly a year and I'm enjoying it. One thing I didn't consider was not being able to understand conversation among a group of Filipinos. True, English is well enough understood to conduct business, one on one. My experience living in a smaller town is that men my age, my peer group, don't have a very strong grasp of conversational English. I feel like I'm missing out on a world of knowledge by not being able to communicate with them. Obviously the solution would be for me to learn better Bisayan. I don't regret my decision and largely credit your comments for helping me move forward.

Salamat. That's all I have so far. And a few Spanish words.... Things are starting to settle down. I'm going to start trying to learn.

@randyrandy3472 you will be learning cebuano. The dialect where I live is Bisayan. In Tacloban, 85k east of here it's waray waray. Don't let that overwhelm you though. While there are some appreciable differences they all manage to communicate. Some words are hybrids from the 300 year Spanish occupation. Kumusta sounds a lot like como esta and it means the same thing. Kumusta ka means how are you. In Bisayan anyway. Good luck. Thanks.

When I met my Filipina wife during our graduate studies in college and eventually fell in love with her, the first thing that I did was study Tagalog so I would understand what she was saying behind my back😂. Now I'm fluent in both speaking and writing. Good luck!

The best thing that ever happened to me in my life was meeting Ne on Messenger. I wasn't looking for a GF & I never met a Filipina before. In fact, I did know she was one. I was working for FB security on loan from Microsoft. 8 mos. Later she picked me up @ the A/P. I get the never do that a lot. Well, that was 4 yrs. ago & we have never been separated overnight. I was married for 40 yrs. which takes some doing also.

My property tax in Texas is $400 a month and house insurance is $200+ a month. $600 a month living in a "Paid for" house. And it never goes down. Electric is high, not Philippines high, but high. Car insurance is high. I basically have a $1000 a month fixed costs before anything. That would be a pretty good base for cost of living in the Phils.

Although many can speak (understandable enough) English, still many hesitate to speak for the fear of getting rediculed by fellow Filipinos and that's truth. On our end, it's so much easier to understand English written on paper rather than verbal because hearing an English accent can sometimes be an issue to some which can sometimes lead to misunderstanding. Always speak slowly and confirm to the person if you were understood.

@@bw2442 If the "Liberals" would just come out and VOTE! Only about 50 percent of the eligible population actually vote in Texas. Some of issues in the US that will never happen and/or extremely rare in the Philippines - Wrongful arrest or mistaken identity (police here are accompanied by Brgy officials during the arrest so this is not happening) - Carjacking while the owner is present (extremely rare) - Daylight burglary while the owner is inside the house (extremely rare) - HOA foreclosing a house (never happening) - Neighbors in hell (it's normal for neighbors to argue but what's happening in the US is extreme) - non-paying tenants not leaving the house (homeowners will drag you out of the house here, no need for police)

The CDC's list is decent. Catching any disease here may happen, but the Japanese Encephalitis recommendation seemed overkill.

Yes there are a few areas in the Philippines that can be dangerous, but so far I have never heard of a mass shooting at a school there, life in the Philippines is what you make it, keep your nose out of politics and you can live happily ever after
