The rear wheel does have suspension, modern bikes have monoshocks (single shock absorber) on the rear swingarm. The only bikes that don't are trial bikes, which are basically a specialized dirtbike made for stunts (and the fuel tanks on those are not where you typically have a fuel tank either).

bikes have suspension for the front and rear, when just cruising i think its like 70/30. Rear is doing most of (but not all) the work to smooth out bumps. Its similar to a mountain bike in placement, the shock is more towards the middle where the swingarm meets the frame.
