I Crashed and Lost My Arm... What Happened?

I am just going to put this here in case it's useful to a random rider. I was also in a collision and am mostly ok. It was not my fault but I gained 2 main lessons. First is the mantra "Brake. Accept.(Fixate to) escape." I realized that my brain was stuck on trying to optimize braking when I may have been able to swerve. Braking was correct, but I needed to accept it wasn't enough and move on to fixate on my escape path to swerve. 2nd lesson was to keep to the right lane position 1. This is because people can turn left from behind another car. The right lane makes it easier to see them, and starts you off with more space if you need to swerve further to your right. People turning right are generally easier to see and anticipate since very rarely can they turn right out of order like those turning left. Position 1 still gives you some space to evade though. My collision was much slower, like at most 1/3 the speed maybe and I had all the gear short of full race leathers. Still was difficult to get out of bed and even walk for the first 2 days or so. Could not even play video games(enjoyably) because my hand was swolen and pinky had been broken. That was with riding gloves. I never considered even riding without helmet or gloves before the collision,it's even more insane to me after. Someone turned left in front of me from behind the lead car because they didn't want to wait. I was hurled from the bike, but my gear would have protected me completely EXCEPT I landed on the ground(after slamming into the hood or roof of the car) suboptimally and that is where I got the injuries. You really want gear that will absorb and deflect impact if you land on or near your head or on your butt. Bennets Bike Social did an airbag round up of testing and the top picks do this. The Alpinestars Techair 7 with it's long back protector is probably also good.

You can also git gud at driving 1000hp racecars and supras on racetracks in physics simulators and learning Judo/wrestling for the 'fall damage mitigation' skill.

@deathtoke6640 I don't think judo falls are really applicable. It would be like getting thrown 10 feet in the air and 30 feet away AFTER a prime Mike Tyson boxed you in the head. You lose all orientation with the ground. If you can see the ground or fall in such a way as you maintain orientation then maybe, but the gear will probably save you well enough. There really isn't anything like it. I never lost consciousness and all I could tell was I was flying through the air and when I landed it took me by surprise.

Saw a new guy crash in front of me this summer who later that night got his arm amputated. He crashed because he didn’t shoulder check mid curve, and ran into my friend. He wiped out and ripped a guard rail with gear on. Highly recommend going to the track, you’ll learn a lot that will make you much safer on the street. And most importantly take care of your mental health.

Worst and saddest part to me is, if I saw correctly from the video he put in, he had no gear on when he was lying on the ground. Maybe, maybe not, gear could have saved his body, maybe even his arm.

One of my childhood friends got a sport bike and was riding at excessive speeds. He hit a bump in the road at high speeds and lost control of the bike. He slid into the guard rail posts off the side of the road and they tore off two of his legs, one arm, and a significant portion of his other arm. He survived because a lady that saw it happen used her clothing to put tourniquets on him. He has 3 prosthetics now and had to live in a assisted living facility for awhile. Be careful everyone. Accidents can happen, and just in general, tomorrow is never promised. (Psalm 103:15-16, James 4:13-17, 2 Peter 3:1-18, John 14:6, John 11:25-26) Seek the Lord while He may be found. Read the Bible. Someone I rode sport bikes with got into a bad accident the day he broke up with his girlfriend. He was going way over 100mph and rear ended a car on the highway. The bike split in half and caught on fire. He was on life support for a month and the family decided to pull the plug. It’s just not worth riding if your mind isn’t in a good place. Not only did he end his life at 22 but he traumatized the other driver, family and friends for life. Stay strong man and thank God everyday you’re still alive!

I gotta say man I was in a horrible accident as well, dam near had to have my left arm amputated. Doc said I almost bled to death twice (needed four bags of blood) out of my left arm and had a total of 3 surgeries, had more broken bones and also popped my bladder ect. hey bro, I'm so sorry you've had to go through this. 3 months ago i also had an accident which resulted in a BPI injury on my left arm (avulsions c7,c8,t1 and breaks c5,c6), as well as a broken femur, radius and ulnar, and most bones in my left hand. i know how tough it is to experience a dead arm. The recovery is lonely and days can feel like weeks. It can feel like a nightmare you wish you could wake up from, like your trapped. none the less its honestly amazing to see you up and well, and somehow motivated enough to ride again and make content!! I've been sitting at home depressed for weeks now after rehab and this is the most inspiring video I've come across, si thank you for having the balls to put yourself out there for the bike community to see. keep up the good work mate, life might've changed for us but it isnt over... love from Australia

I just started riding about a year and a half ago, went from a Grom up to a Speed Twin. I wish this on no one, not even my worst enemy. Losing an arm whilst riding is like losing an eye in archery, it ruins you psychically and mentally. Crashing in it of itself is a terrible feeling, ruining your fancy bike and injuring yourself. But losing a limb is a whole nother thing, also having to deal with the law whilst coping with the fact that you lost an arm has got to be a terrible feeling, the entire biker community is with you man. We love you and so does your family, im glad you got youself back up on your feet and i wish the best for you. Youre still with us, thats what matters.

I crashed into a barrier on a windy road here in Australia in September 2021. Ended up breaking my foot in 3 places and ruptured disc between C6 and C7 that required surgery to fuse as there was pressure on the nerves which was making my left arm numb. I was laid up for months and months and was going through physical therapy as well. I will attest the depression is no joke and I felt robbed of the person I was before my accident and how invincible, fit, and capable my body was. You are a stronger person than me brother. People do not realise there are things that can happen to you that legitimately make you want to die and there were times after my injury I would imagine walking into the ocean and just letting it take me. I never had a concrete plan to do it but if I died I would have been okay with it if that makes sense. My advice to anyone else going through this is that when you die there are no more possibilities, that's just the end of the line and your time on this planet. If you live, once you overcome the depression there are always going to be possibilities even if you lose a limb or use of your legs and so on, you will still get to experience life even if you don't like the way your life is compared to others, SOMETHING is better than eternal NOTHING.

found this while surfing tonight. one month in the hospital? you were really messed up....besides your arm...so hard to see you laying in the street like that but, despite your accident, you are a brave young man and started off by acknowledging that you are alive (could have been worse). it is totally understandable that you would be "the D word" and emotionally hurting. Couldn't have been easy at all man...I commend your strength throughout the recovery and abilty to turn this educational. I couldn't walk for over a week due to a near 3rd degree exhaust burn from my DRZ and was having anxiety and panic attacks from the pain. man I started following you a few months before the accident and since then it's just been like weird idk how to explain it, but I've wondered what your mental battle was throughout the whole thing. This is because i had fractured my finger (in april) and didn't know if i was gonna lose it (by no means am i saying its worse than your accident) but I did have a mental battle with myself trying not to fall in that hole, and a few months after (in oct) needing a surgery in my knee not making it easier. seeing your ig updates here and there just really put things in perspective like "if he's getting through it with such a big accident why can't I." and i just wanna say thank you for sticking it out. As a longtime motorcycle rider I have lost a few rider friends of mine due to speeding. I have always been a very safe rider & never speed because speed kills. A month ago I got hit and run by a Chevy Silverado that ran a stop sign I broke 5 bones in my arm and wrist and I can’t imagine how you’re feeling I barely wanted to live when I realized how long it was going to take to get limited functionality back. Yo this crazy but I too had a really bad motorcycle accident and currently can't use my left arm and next month I'm going to have a surgery and might have some use. @nckgti7 Not at all. It was supposed to be a normal Sunday ride. Car pulls out in front of me, I was gonna pass him but he turned left. Bad timing so I hit driver side door, and went flying ( around 55mph). I broke my right leg, both right forearm bones, along with right arm c7, c8, t1 avulsion. I had my helmet & leathers on thankfully. Its a blessing to still be here 🙏🏼

Sorry you had to go through all of that man. It was hard listening to your story but definitely a good reality check. Hopefully your arm will gain some function but in the case it gets amputated, at least prosthetics look increasingly badass nowadays. Especially as technology gets better and better, prosthetics are becoming more viable. Speedy recovery, both physically and mentally.

I had a "life changing" crash also, and I similarly, can't remember much of that day. And honestly, I'm glad for that. Apparently, my front tire blow out going too fast around a corner in the mountains. You can imagine how that went ~ I'm guessing it's some super scary $hit, and I don't mind not having to relive it in my memories. I still ride motorcycles to \m/ "Where there is life, there is hope". Just want to say you're way stronger than me. I crushed my right hand in June. Lost half of my ring finger and most of the dexterity in my thumb, index and middle finger. I definitely felt some serious depression while I was healing up. And my situation is a walk in the park compared to yours. But your attitude is very inspiring. Dude, sorry that you got hurt it's difficult seeing the trauma you went through and hearing your words as you come across as a really nice guy and all the mental problems that came after being so young. Hopefully the story gets out there and some positive will come from educating people that speed is the biggest issue young motorcyclists face and the dangers are evident. Sorry to hear of your accident, not sure how I came across your story. Long time chill rider here. I took motorcycle safety decades ago because I wanted an easier way into my motorcycle endorsement. I had been on dirtbikes before and those skills definitely set me apart from others who took the class. I was glad I did the course, what stuck with me is avoiding riding if drinking (broke rule once, luckily nothing happened), tired (avoided doing that), mentally not right (I got into some crazy road rage here/there and luckily nothing happened and I would always ride better afterwards), be smart (I focused on riding smart rather than fast). I had kids and after a few years sold my bikes, 10 years later I got a bike and it surprised me how much skill I lost but smart riding never left because I applied it to driving a car for most part. After riding again for a couple years I still struggle with keeping it up. I use to ride all good weather days to work, it was a fantastic pick-me-up. I got an EV this spring and didn't commute on my bike once. I have wrecked my body twice (once dirtbike in college, once an e-bike 2019, high sided at 21mph in shorts/T-shirt) in my life and it just isn't worth it now that I am recovered and as strong as ever after surgery and a couple years of work, I don't want to step backwards again but forced myself to get back into it because I was itching to after a few rides on my brother's bike. I strongly suggest you find another passion, you only have one arm left, preserve the hell out of it. This is advice I picked up from someone who lost an eye in an accident. You can find enjoyment in something safer for your one good arm.

I've suffered from a debilitating drug addiction for most of my life now, its brought me to my knee's many times now, but therapy was crucial for helping my through my depression. If you feel up to it I'd recommend trying therapy for yourself. Stay strong man

Eight years ago , I also had a bad accident with my motorcycle and a truck, spent two months in the hospital , had 14 surgeries , and have been home for 1.5 years to learn to walk and use my arm again. I got myself a new bike this year , and besides the injuries on my foot , nobody can tell from the outside I've been in an accident. Ride with gear , dude , not for me but for YOU!
