So, I know the boaters that hit the dock. If you look at the motors, you'll see the starboard motor is raised all the way out of the water. It had to be shut down because of an oil issue. The port motor was not running right as well. The boat had an overhaul of the motors and all of the mechanicals, and this was it's first time back in the water after 3 years. The throttles froze up as they were coming in, and they couldn't control the boat at the end. Back to the mechanic to troubleshoot and fix. They also had some minor hull damage from the dock but were able to fix that.

I recall about 20yrs ago out on dads boat in Lake Chelan, WA and the weather rolled in crazy like this. Fortunately my dad knows how to boat and got everyone in safely- however many of the boats sustained damage as that storm raged. Never panic

I’ve been on both the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River when these sudden storms come up. Can be really scary, but was always lucky my husband had so much experience around boats that we were in good hands. Course we all had jobs to do before getting to the dock. Pulling down the canopy, getting lines and fenders for whatever side we were gonna dock at. Getting any covers on that we could. Course he also taught us to watch the flags to see which way the wind was blowing. That way we could pick a dock that the wind was pushing us towards the dock instead of fighting against it.

High, gusty winds is never good. Lucky for them that the wind was coming into them as they were getting the boats on the trailer. Cross wind and wind from the stern makes it more difficult. Either get to the dock sooner than other boats or ride it out. When riding it out start prepping before the storm hits. Move to an area that is not congested and have plenty of room to swing. Drop the anchor and dig it in. Scope should be 9-1 if possible. Get the canvas up if desired. Always be on the lookout for boats that are drifting. If a boat is drifting in your direction, it is possible to put the boat in reverse and turn the wheel to pivot on the anchor. Not the best thing to do in high winds as the anchor may release if too much force is applied to it. Just swing the boat enough so the drifting boat goes past. As the other boat is going past your boat, make sure to give them a 1 finger salute.

Forgive me for asking the simplest of questions but, where is everyone’s fenders???? I’m never going faster than I’m prepared to bump something and I’ve got 3 fenders per side. Wind, Wake, Tide, Morons are all things that make boats bump and yet, nobody puts them out. That’s the one thing that just jumped out to me.
@Tb0n3 Жыл бұрын
Most of the docks have rubber rails on them so at the very least they're alright from low speed bumps, and fenders roll up anyway. If you're going to be coming up to something like a raw pylon or wood dock then sure, but you're just adding extra things to do without a huge benefit.
