Eric Clapton said he was "in awe" of Stevie Ray. He said most guitarists, himself included, kind of have an idea of what they're going to do, but with Stevie Ray it was like the music just flowed out of his fingers without any thought. I mean look at his face, he's in another zone when he's playing. Such a tragedy that he died so young. I was lucky enough to see SRV and the band live. It was an outdoor venue so the intensity was a little less but it still was absolutely incredible.
@davidwalker50543 ай бұрын
I've noticed when Stevie is in the Zone something seems to take control of him from out in the ether he doesn't seem to be consciously aware of what he,s playing. I once read an article when Stevie said. When I start to think about what to play next I begin to loose it. That's the sign of a true musician playing from the heart
@bettyrose9592 ай бұрын
@@davidwalker5054 Was a white boy who paid his dues on the Austin Circuit back in the day. Paid with some of the greats when he was a teenager. You didn't have a spot on that stage 'thinking.' Anyway, that old blue scene was amazing back in that day. Still had the great Juke Joint bands. Was amazing where he was able to go with it. Not many in ones lifetime that have a natural capability, regardless of what that capability is. That is God Given, whatever god gave it to him. That crash took almost all of Eric Clapton's tour too. Just put that show together Stevie/Clapton. Was like the 3rd or 4th show of the tour. Was far more devastating than a lot of people realize. Stevie wasn't the only great taken that day. I even remember where I was standing when they announced it happened. I was buying strings at the local music store. Was only about 50 miles from where it happened. Can't remember the town or the name of the store, we had some miles to drive. I didn't pay attention other than guitar strings and Taco Bell.

Minutes before this show he was reportedly coked out of his mind, to the point where his band mates didn’t really know is if he’d be able to play. This stellar performance---still the greatest I've ever seen and heard in regards to guitar playing (being absolutely LOADED with flawless technical precision, incredible feeling, massive tone, and remarkable showmanship)---is even more impressive when you understand that Stevie is doing this on an instrument with heavy-gauged strings and high action!! How he's able to bend, manipulate, and control them while playing from the front, let alone BEHIND THE BACK, is simply mind-boggling!! By the way, Stevie was nearly as kind and humble of a man as he was a fantastic guitarist!!

#1 is still owned by his brother which makes me so happy. He called that guitar his first wife. If I recall correctly, it was with him on the helicopter when it went down.
@neilpatrickhairless2 ай бұрын
Indeed. This guitar was famous for being in rough shape as well. His tech Rene would literally have to strip wires of their covering and put the pieces of covering on the ball ends of the strings so the bridge didn't break them because it was so corroded and eaten up with sweat. Also, he had pretty high action on his guitars... Most guitarists wouldn't physically be able to play chords on it much less bends unless they ran bridge cables for strings and high action themselves. He didn't need a $5000 piece of furniture to get his point across and believe me, he could have had any guitar he wanted on the planet for free regardless of price
@Huckleberryheretic2 ай бұрын
@neilpatrickhairless absolutely. I've heard the stories about number one in particular being built so many times. Him wearing out and bending the neck so badly it was hard or impossible to repair it sometimes without replacing or shaving it. Dude was a legend. So sad that he's gone. Straight up old school blues - it's its own thing that has influenced a lot of other music genres. The lyrics of these kinds of songs are usually fairly simple and straight forward. Vocals tend to be powerful, raw emotion. The beat is simple and strong. You can have varying degrees of other instruments, but it's really all about expression through the singing of the steal guitar.
