I like how the surprised expression on Frieren’s face when Himmel put the ring on her finger is layers deep. In the past, that expression probably just meant, “just what the heck is this guy doing? Why did he get on a knee to put the ring on my finger?” But that expression serves to show current Frieren’s realization that there was romantic meaning to that gesture.

Someone pointed out that the lotus petals on Fern's bracelet is fully opened represents 'eternal love' that's blossoming while the ones on Frieren's ring is closed represents 'eternal love' that yet to bloom

There is no romance between Himmel and Frieren - that's the tragedy - she is only now realizing, 80 years later, how he felt about her. He spent his whole life in love with a woman who could not understand what his feelings for her actually were. And of course Himmel knew what the ring meant -that was the point of his reacting.
