I literally had my own “Same Old Lang Syne” experience back in the 80’s. A girl I had been madly in love with in high school (around 1976) and I randomly met at a liquor store in Timonium, MD one night between Christmas and New Year’s and ended up splitting a 6-pack while sitting in her car for almost 2 hours. We reminisced and laughed at some of the stuff we had done. It was flurrying and her windshield was covered by the time we said our goodbyes. We kissed a little longer than a simple kiss goodbye. I got out and watched her drive away through the parking lot. As I went back to my car, the flurries turned to drizzle. That song came on the radio just as I got back to my apartment and I sat and listened to it. Watching this video made me go to Classmates and look her up. I left her a message. I still think about you and that night Judy H. I hope you’ve had a good life.
@HeritageWealthPlanning3 ай бұрын
Why did you break up?
@jayphilbin28713 ай бұрын
@@HeritageWealthPlanningwe never really “got together”. She was into dating the “bad” boys and I was friend-zoned. When she would go through the latest breakup we’d hang out for a while until her next go-round. I cared about her and would always be there. It wasn’t until that evening in my post that she realized that there should have been something but we were teenagers (she’s 2 years younger than me) and looking back, both of us were awkward in our own ways between each other. I never saw her again after that night. This was before “the internet” and cell phones, etc. We were in our mid 20’s then and we both had done a bit of growing up. Every time I hear that song I think of her and that night and how unbelievably parallel the lyrics perfectly align with what happened. I’m 65 now (she’d be 63) and I’ve been very happily married for 32 years. I know that she got married at some point (her last name is different), but whether that is still the case - I don’t know. Anyway, that’s the story and will always be a part of my path through life. Hope I haven’t bored you with the details. I appreciate you asking.

As an American, always felt like Dan was our Gordon Lightfoot. Just my opinion... but Dan had a way of putting lyrics to music that really reminded me of Gordon. I was introduced to Dan Fogelberg, in 1981, by my girl-friend at the time. She and I started dating shortly before 'The Innocent Age' was released. She was very excited when the record came out and, the first time she played it for me, I was hooked. Sadly we broke-up in May of the following year. She was the love of my life, and her memory haunts me to this day. Which is why this album, and particularly 'Same Old Lang Syne', bring me both comfort... and sadness.

Back in 1998 or 1999, my first wife and I went to an outdoor concert. Double header, as it were: Christopher Cross, followed by Dan Fogelberg. CC felt like he was there to do a job. ... I don't know, he sang all his hits, but the energy was somehow wrong. Then Dan stepped up and had us in the palm of his hand. You *felt* every song. And he was obviously having fun. "Who here likes heavy metal music? ... Well, I don't play that." And he did the same thing with several other genres. Funny every time. I'll never forget it.

I knew Dan when he was in a local garage band named The Coachmen. They opened for Tommy Roe and the headliners, Paul Revere & the Raiders in 1967. I didn't see Dan for several years. When I saw him playing his acoustic music in about 1972, I didn't appreciate it at all. I was such a hard rocker, it just didn't appeal at that time. Now I can appreciate the greatness of his songs; especially "Leader of the Band" and "Run for the Roses". Both songs tear me up whenever I hear them. I often fish across the street from the grocery store from the song; only now it's 3 smaller stores. We have a Memorial Garden with a park bench in memory of Dan, located on a walking/bicycle trail that runs for miles.

"The snow turned into rain...." at the end of that song is the best single metaphor in all of popular music (IMO). What makes it so great is how many different interpretations and meanings it has for people. For me the snow is analogous to memories; they are crystallized, unchanging, unflowing, beautiful, suspended in time. And as T.S Elliot says: "winter kept us warm". When the snow turns to rain those memories have changed to something dynamic, something that has come back to life but is still not comfortable in that it gets us wet and we often run to get away from it. The "old familiar pain" coming back again.

Having been born in 1968, the 80s are a special decade for me. What digital music has kind of lost is listening to a whole album. Sure, it can be done but not sure if current generation does this given how easy it is to play different songs after each other without having to change a record or CD. As such, the albums I purchased I listened to over and over. Because of this, I can’t recall what were the hits. Two examples I can think of this is ZZ Top’s Afterburner album and Paul Simon’s Graceland album. For 1990s, same thing for Tom Petty’s Into the Great Wide Open. Don’t get me wrong, I love streaming music. I do find that I often will end up listening to entire albums for the 80s and 90s and 2000’s.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I saw Dan Fogelberg in a small CO venue back in about 1989. Just him and his guitar. It was absolutely magical.

Innocent Age was a great album, but my favorite Dan Fogelberg album is Nether Lands. “Scarecrow’s Dream” and “Dancing Shoes” are near perfect songs. It may not have had the chart hits, but those songs got me through college. Those songs spoke to me in a way nothing else could in the late ‘70s… certainly not disco.

I graduated from high school in 1979 and from college in 1983. Dan Fogelberg’s songs are amongst my most treasured memories from that time in my life. ❤

I was always conscious that *The Innocent Age* was a double-length album that represented a career pinnacle for Dan, that he intended for it to be personal and that he didn't intend for it to be commercial. The one song I always knew from the album was "Leader of the Band". Though my own father and I didn't have the same relationship that Dan had with his or share the same experiences, it still represented what my dad and I shared. When I switched from being a drummer to being a guitar player, he was the first person to show me chords. Even before I started my formal training, Dad was convinced that I was outplaying him, and he tried whenever he could to motivate me. Though he suggested I would be wise to try finding another trade to keep myself solvent, he didn't object too much when I failed to and ended up permitting music to be my only trade. When I cover "Leader of the Band" on my own, no matter how far away we were from each other, dating back before Dad passed away in November 2019, there he was.

I used to volunteer at a coffee shop, The Red Herring, in Urbana, IL, at U of IL, where Fogelberg used to play for tips (and other great singer-songwriters). I knew him briefly then, before he left to find fame and a career in music, and he taught us budding guitarists tips and tricks. An album was cut there that is now posted on KZbin, called The Red Herring Bootleg Album, and if you look it up, you can hear a young Dan singing "Looking for a Lady" which I believe ended up on his first album.

I still like the first one best, but the other one is grwoing on me. I claim Home Free and Netherlands as my favorites, but i like most of Fog's stuff, especially the earlier stuff. Check out Gerry Beckley from America, on the Harbor album, with Monster, and then compare it to, There's a Place in The World for a Gambler. Beckley is on that song, and it sounds to me, somewhat like Monster, or i suppose, visa-versa.

I heard the music of Dan Fogelberg for the first time, exactly in the 80's as I was growing up. And let me tell you, it blew my mind. It also gave me so much inspiration to become a good songwriter, even though I knew that I was never going to be anything close to the excellence of his songwriting abilities. But that inspiration still lives inside of me till this day and it will live inside of me forever! I thank Dan Fogelberg for his music! He was ( and still is ) the best in my opinion! His music will live on forever!

I agree 100% with everything the Professor says about Dan Fogelberg and this album. He lived near Pagosa Springs, CO. When I visited there once, we were driving through the mountains, the San River alongside the road. The aspens were golden on that late October morning, and the skies were gray. The first snowflakes began to fall, and I suddenly knew where his soul found all those beautiful lyrics and notes. The purity of his voice perfectly matched the moment. Tears flowed as we played his music, and I felt so lucky to truly understand where it all came from. Same Auld Lang Sygne was always special to me, and brought memories of my HS sweetheart. Well, he and I reunited and got married 30 years later, and I found out he always thought of me during that song.❤

I heard songs off this album on the radio when I was 15. My sister listened to contemporary rock. I was more of a Boston, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top aficionado when I heard the innocent age. I stopped and listened the next time it played on the radio I went down to the local tower records. The album was being played in a room towards the back, I listen to most of the album, then went to the CD area and picked up the CD. For the rest of the summer I listen to this album nonstop. It gave me perspective and a new understanding of things through the years. I’ve listened to different music but keep coming back to this album I still sit down and listen to the whole thing. I can’t just listen to certain songs. It takes me back to my past. I’m now 59 years old and understand a little more about what Dan Fogelberg was singing about. The innocent age is a timeless, classic masterpiece of expression and will always be apart.
