"What's this golden child thing"... well... My grandmother had a golden child. He could do no wrong in her eyes. At the end of her life she wanted the family to be together and happy... well... My cousin (the daughter of her golden child) wanted nothing to do with her. Which I completely understand... as my grandmother's golden child lost custody _and_ visitation rights with his daughter because he was an abusive A-hole _and_ cheated on his taxes so he wouldn't pay child support (yeah, that didn't go well for the golden child)... but through all of this, our grandmother blamed everything on my cousin's mother... saying she cheated, she was a gold digger, etc. while completely ignoring all the bad stuff her golden child did in his life... like the elder abuse charges. Yeah... that's the extreme version of the "golden child" phenomenon.

With the cat scenario, who wouldn’t love to realize that someone’s cat has the same name you do? Especially when I was a kid, sharing a name like that would make my day. Hell, I share a birthday with my little sister, and while a lot of people made a huge fuss over it when she was born (lots of negative emotions following a gritty divorce) I was absolutely over the moon and now make our birthday cake every year as a tradition (for her sweet 13 it’s gonna be a murder mystery cake and I’m so hyped to make that happen). Weird coincidences are fun and awesome when you don’t treat it as a devastating event.

I can relate to the hair story. When I was younger, my parents kept my hair cut, even though I hated it. They did it for the same reason too, it was difficult to take care of. I was too young to remember how I felt, but I think the daughter certainly will. I can totally understand where everyone's reactions are coming from, as well.

Yeah, my parents forced me to keep my hair short as a kid. Not because they hated taking care of it, they never did take care of it after I started kindergarten, it was my responsibility after that. I would have gone to school looking like crap if I didn't take care of my own hair and they wouldn't have cared if I did look like crap. Thier issue was that they didn't want me to become vain, so I wasn't allowed makeup or anything else either. Finally when I was 16 I told the hairdresser to just trim it because I wanted to grow it long and have kept my hair long since. Needless to say, when we got home my parents were furious, and to this day, they still don't understand why I keep my hair long. I am over 40 and they have nothing to say, but they still hate my long hair and mention cutting it regularly, because it just means women are vain jn thier opinion. The thing that pissed me off though, is not that the girls hair was cut at the shoulders, it was because that people believe that the step mom should be required to get up and style an 11 year olds hair. By 11 she can take care of her own damed hair if the wants to keep it long. I would have been happy as hell to have long hair at 11 and wouldn't have complained about caring for it. I would never style the hair of any 11 year old no matter what length thier hair is. What is the step mom? The girls maidservant? How entitled is an 11 year old whose step mom combs and styles her hair every morning? The step mom should have told the father that she was done dealing with his daughters hair, especially since she was 11 and should be dealing with it herself long since. And I had to deal with my own hair and clothes when I was five so don't say that 11 year olds can't handle it. In my life, I wouldn't care how long/short thier hair is, but I won't take care of it for them, washing, combing and styling is 100% thier responsibility, not mine. I would be willing to bet that the dad would not be happy to get up early and tediously deal with his daughters hair for more than a few days before he got tired of it and gave the job back to the step mom. As someone who is not their parents golden child, people who haven’t experienced it just can’t understand. Being made to quit activities because your sibling doesn’t want to do them anymore, having every achievement be ignored in favour of that sibling, everything being my fault even when it isn’t just cause that sibling was involved. Look, having teenage feeling about parents being ‘sooo unfair’ is normal, growing up and moving past it is a part of life, But that is not that same as the hurt parents cause by always choosing one child over another. 5 years of therapy and counting and this is still a part of my life years later. What the sister did maybe an overreaction, and obviously this Reddit post can’t represent the years between two people. But the fact he had to resist the urge to tell the in-laws rather than maybe talking to the sister about why they maybe feel about how their parents treated them. I’m not saying that it will all work out but it’s probably better than them hating each other over who is loved more. Jus my thoughts, take ‘em or leave ‘em.

That girl who had the long hair will most likely hate her stepmother forever. And if the girl is anything like me, she will grow out her hair as long as possible once she's able to. To people with long hair, it can be their pride, joy, identity, an expression of personality/beliefs, etc. etc. etc. It takes a lot of time, gentle care, patience, and love to grow it out that long--and evidently the stepmother has little of any of those attributes. I hate the term "teachable moment," but this easily could have been one. Teach the girl about protective hairstyles? Negotiate with her so she does more chores, to make up for the cost of the products? Get into DIY gels?

An easy solution to the story where the 17 yr old daughter who has just been diagnosed with diabetes & is having a hard time keeping up with the pet care would be to invest in some auto feeders (assuming dry food), a robot litterbox, auto deliveries for pet food, a system like Alexa to set alarms/reminders for both pet care tasks & her own schedule, & working pet care into self care. Per Google, exercising when you have a "bolus of rapid-acting insulin on board" can risk a dangerous drop in blood sugar, so timing dog walks either right when she wakes up/before eating or during "safe" times of day, it should allow her to get exercise in & care for the dogs with her new diagnosis. She will need to rely on schedules & routine much more now, but with support, once she gets it down, she will find things much easier. The whole family will likely need to adhere to her schedule too when planning meals, travel, & events, so support is necessary, but its absolutely possible to handle!

Goldenchild/scapegoat, where one child is lavished with attention, gifts, favor, and everything else, and the scapegoat, the child who gets little to nothing, cast offs, ignored, or the actions of the golden child is blamed on them, as well as being voluntold to do things for the golden child's favor. It's not a phenomenon it's a narcissistic family dynamic where one or more family members are narcissistic/enables narcissistic behavior. I was a scapegoat and was parentified at a young age when my older sibling started having children, I was effectively raising the kids for a while because their mother couldn't get her act together and abused consumables that weren't food. But god forbid anyone recognize any of the work I did I was just told I was greedy and selfish when I wanted time to myself, to study, or get opportunities so I could get the hell out of it. Daughter with Type 1 Diabetes not fulfilling obligations: Either light ESH, or NAH, I can't decide. OP is not an ahole for being fed up with her daughter's failing grades and neglect of her animals. The daughter is not an ahole for being chronically ill, and not knowing how to cope. I feel really bad for everyone in this story, including the animals. That being said, the daughter is wrong for mot asking for help, and OP is definitely wrong for threatening to punish her daughter instead of trying to find out why her daughter is struggling, and trying to help her. Here's my rough idea of how OP should handle it (these steps are not necessarily in order): -Reach out to friends/family (including daughter's friends) and ask for help. Ask for one person to care for the animals, another to drive daughter to doctor/therapy appointments, another to help your daughter with homework, etc. -Try to find out what, specifically, your daughter is struggling with, because something is clearly wrong. Is she physically tired from her diabetes? Is she depressed? Does she have any neurodivergencies or mental health problems that are being exacerbated by the stress of this situation? Does she just feel overwhelmed, and possibly need a break from school? -Have another conversation with your daughter about this, but be more kind this time. Apologise for threatening her, and then reiterate that she cannot keep neglecting all of her responsibilities. Ask her what's going on, and offer to help her in any way you can, but don't be pushy. If she bristles up ("I'm fine, it's nothing, just leave me alone", etc), back off for a bit, and bring it up again later. If she keeps trying to avoid the conversation, say something along the lines of "I know you're upset, and that's okay, but we still need to talk about this." TL,DR OP was too harsh, and needs to try a softer approach.

For that story specifically, though, I think her sister had no right to be pulling that just because OP found love and the family liked her. OP isn't at fault if people act differently to her than someone else. And she shouldn't be expected to just put her own love life on pause to cater to her sister. That's not how to solve that problem. I DO think the sisters should sit and have a conversation where OP listens, learns, and understands the trauma that kind of treatment her sister is obviously feeling. That's the part that bothers me about it. Everyone is acting like it's OP's fault, when it's their PARENTS who caused the trauma. OP admitted she had no idea that anything was actually wrong, and that's not a sign she's a bad person. People are just assuming that because they don't like "Golden Children" and want to villainize her. It's not great that she still doesn't understand, but again, ignorance is not a sign of a bad person. Just someone who needs to learn. Her sister is just as much in the wrong for wanting to dictate whether or not OP can make friends with whoever she wants. She obviously didn't do it through malicious intent if we go by OP's words. She was just making friends with people who were nice to her. She's allowed to date someone if she feels she's compatible with them without worrying that her sister's feelings might be hurt. I feel like people are so determined to label someone as an entitled brat that they don't realize that demanding someone revolve their life around the person they're siding with is just as entitled.

throwing the switch away story: OP is straight up abusive, doing things like destroying an item, or throwing it away is abuse I'd say that he is grounded from it for a full month not permanently and if OP and her husband are struggling financially this is so much worse, OP is TA but how much of an AH she is relies on the financial situation, I might be a bit biased as I'm a nintendo player myself as my profile suggests. Edit: holy crap that third comment is so true I did not realize that, that commenter is very wise and insightful.

I feel like I’m in the minority with the one about the person who brought their disabled son to the wedding. Aside from a very short outburst that was immediately resolved, the son, at least from what the parent was saying, wasn’t causing issues. Also as long as his headphones and iPad keeps him calm during the wedding, I don’t see an issue with him doing so. It keeps him from being disruptive so I don’t think people should care so much. Idk, maybe I’m biased cause I’m disabled myself (autistic and have adhd), and have done many years of volunteer work with disabled children, but even so, I’m gonna say NTA. He wasn’t disruptive, he met the age requirement, why should it matter if he’s not mentally over the age of 10? The way OP’s sister and family acted feels a little ableist, even if unintentionally so. Them wanting him excluded immediately implies they see him as a little kid, and not the teenager he is. I’m so sick of seeing developmentally disabled people being treated way younger than they really are just because they don’t act the way they’re expected to at their age. It’s not our fault we didn’t hit certain milestones at the same rate as neurotypical people. Like for example, until I was 4, I was almost fully non verbal. That doesn’t mean it’d be right to treat me like an infant. Just like how it wasn’t right for your sister and family to treat your 13 year old like he’s 3. Your son shouldn’t have to miss out on important events like his aunt’s wedding because of something he can’t control.
@Isalley1724 Жыл бұрын
It said he interrupted the event once before they gave him the iPad, which is why I disagree with your opinion. I myself have some disabilities, but I know when I'm not able to stay thru an event like that due to my disabilities, and dont go. I'm not saying u r wrong, just that I disagree

Why are people getting so mad with Emkay? First people were upset that they removed the outro and the fanart segment from their videos. I wasn't happy about it either, but I understand why they did it since a lot of people would click off at that segment which negatively affects viewer retention and monetization for the channel. Then people got upset when they included gameplay of Subway Surfers in the background. I didn't like this change either, but it didn't ruin the videos or anything so it was surprising to see people getting so mad over it. And finally, after they removed the Subway Surfers gameplay and included stock footage relevant to the stories, people got mad again. I don't see what's wrong with the stock footage. It's something visually interesting to look at and they still include captions for the stories for viewers with hearing issues. If it's distracting, you could just listen to the video instead of watching it. After all of these situations, I think people just don't like change.

I can't believe how many people did not think about the welfare of the animals in the story about the daughter. It does sound harsh, but life is harsh. Pets don't understand you are sick. When I was once in the hospital being told that I almost had a heart attack and they needed to do testing, all I could think about was going home because my dog was alone at the time and the hospital had no cell reception. I forced them to let me leave and said I'd come back for tests because my dog needed care. I may be wrong about this, she never said which type of diabetic she was, which is a huge missing piece of info before people should be going nuts. One for is very manageable and sucks to have but isn't as life threatening.

If I remember the video said type one diabetes. I’ll go back and check to make sure Edit: 18:04 Yeah it’s type one. Doesn’t change the fact the animals need care and I’m not condoning animals being in a household if they’re going to be neglected but type one diabetes can be deadly and it’s understandable why the daughter is depressed and the parent could’ve worded things better

So, my girlfriend has been in my children's life since my daughter was 3 (now 5) and my son was 6 (now 8) and I have had full custody with their mother having a few hours long visits once a week. My gf is amazing with the kids , That aside, if she ever cut my daughters hair, I'd feel the exact same way. I have hair as long as my daughters and understand how important it is, personally, let alone the implications of cutting someone else's hair so drastically. Definitely the a-hole

It sounds like the husband and his sister refuse to listen to OP's boundaries about not messing with her cooking, so I think she should get her and her kids take-out and give them both none. Make them eat the monstrosity they created themselves since they're changing it to their liking, or they can make/buy their own food. If they don't eat it, pack it in the fridge for later. Refuse to give them anything else until they finish it. If they refuse and it goes bad, repeat the whole cycle if they do it again.

Why in the world would a kid want to work with animals and not consider that it smells? Even a toddler has gone to a petting zoo. It's a tradition in most school districts where I live to go to the big zoo in the state capital. It's like wanting to be a doctor and not realizing that comes with breaking bad news to people. It's no pleasant or a highlight of the job, but you deal.

Id say NAH. I get thst the daughter is struggling with mental health, and the parent was a little harsh, but I'm sure they're both just stressed. The animals do need to be taken care of, and if the daughter isn't feeling up to it, while I csnt blame her, the animals shouldn't suffer for it.
@CrazyDaizy3106 Жыл бұрын
Type 1 Diabetes, that shouldn’t stop you from living life. Was the daughter taking care of the pets before the diagnosis? Yes, Then she can continue after the diagnosis. Yes I understand it’s new and possibly stressful/scary but you can’t let it stop you from living your life. And for her grades to drop that drastically, nope that sh*t don’t fly! If that was my child I would let that be an excuse, if you don’t take care of YOUR pets and you don’t keep YOUR grades up, something’s gotta be done. If that includes rehoming the pets to take the “strain” off of your child so they can focus on School, then that’s what’s gonna have to happen.

The one about the hair also implies racism. Sure, op didn’t mention race, and yes some white people have super curly hair (I’m one of them), but seeing as the little girl and her parents knew how to take care of her hair, it’s not a stretch to see a black girl being abused by her white stepmom because stepmom doesn’t understand, and likely doesn’t care to

As someone who grew up as the black sheep and had a younger sibling who was the golden child, its unironically annoying (and even a bit frustrating) to hear you disregard the concept of golden children and to teel OP to "get over the golden child thing". Like imagine if every adult in your family/life goes out of their way to show you that your sibling is more improtant than you and then you get told constantly that you need to just "get over it"? That's pretty insensitive of you man, i expected better. Don't knock someone else's lived experience just because its foreign and unfamiliar to you. Also I agree, stock white backround or a soft pattern works best for these vids.

For the post where OP was threatening to rehome the pets, I'm leaning towards no one being the Ahole. The daughter is obviously struggling with her mental health right now so I don't blame her for struggling to do her chores. However, those animals still need to be cared for and if this household is no longer able to do that then those pets need to go to a home that can. I WILL say that I don't like how OP went about it. She framed it as a punishment when I think an honest heart to heart would have been better, so maybe 0.5/5 butthole score for that. I'd also like to know exactly what chores were being neglected, since if at least the animals' basic needs were being met there may have been more wiggle room for compromise. My heart goes out to them both and I wish them the best.

Why a sibling's friend's sibling of all people? It's way too weird in many ways. 20:40 NTA. She does need that wake-up call. A diagnosis shouldn't be a reasonable excuse to become a useless bum, especially if you've had it since birth and haven't noticed until now.
