One of my brothers who used to live in OK, had about 80 mommas and had similar problems with "wild" cows jumping fences and being "high headed". Suggested to him to sell those trouble makers, which he didn't want to do. Once he finally did, his heard and life was so much simpler the years after 😀

Been there done that. My herd is smaller. 11 head. I have a central feeding coral. I bring them all into feed and then sort them off. But it is 1000% easier with a helper.

Hi Josh. Is there any reason why you don't use the "Cattle Master" and sheeted sweep or a scaled down version (at another location on the farm) to split up the herd ~ as you are trying to do today? Without the extra hands you mentioned, this could help with looking after injured / sick stock or the troublesome ones.

Maybe you can create something to lock the cows down in place and move the others. Something that goes around the individual animals neck ( humanely ) and holds them in place. An attachment that goes on your heavy equipment and some how reels them in.

When I was a kid working on my grandad's cattle farm, we had a calf that acted all squirrly. He'd get spooked and randomly take off in weird directions and had trouble keeping up with the herd. Even ran into fences. Turns out it was at least partially blind. Maybe Spaz just needs glasses. 🥸

Hello Josh, Would you give an update on what you think about your Reolink camera? I took your recommendation and purchased one for our ranch about three years ago. It doesn't seem to recharge on the solar panel anymore. I am having to take it down about every two weeks to recharge it. Thanks
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 28 күн бұрын
3 I'm pretty sure you can order a new solar kit for it....3 years is about how long the battery will last, so you've probably got a battery not holding charge as well as it used to. I have 2 still working but have had to replace 2 of them due to wear on the battery over 3 1/2 years...they just don't last forever I guess

Hi , you need to keep yourself safe when working cattle. I know hindsight is 20/20 but for your health and sanity you need to work smarter not harder. Handling cattle in the pens is just easier and safer. I know it’s a pain to put then up to the mega shed and the handling pens, job done no stress. Have you considered separating Spaz from the herd for a period of time? Keep her alone, until she wants to be a part of the herd. If she feels bullied or has an underlying illness, she will disassociate from others; much like humans. Just a thought.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 27 күн бұрын
I don't think it's quite that complex, spaz is what they call "high headed". Some animals are just more flighty than other's, I guess it could be considered a mental illness, but she's healthy, fat and skiddish all the time. She's getting better, but she is a dangerous animal, and the bigger she gets, the more dangerous she'll be!

Checkout some Greg Judy videos where he separates cattle with a roll of multibraid. One to two assistants required. There are some vids where one person with multibraid taped to long light rods. This way one person acts like a walking fence that the cows are conditionded to avoid, and then slowly pushed the cull out. Remember, cows like budies. It is better to have more than you want separated at first and make an exact cut later. Most of all remember. I am not a farmer, just a KZbin expert! HA.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 27 күн бұрын
yep, I know greg for sure, and I've seen it. It's a little different when separating just 2 animals v/s a bunch. Split the herd, no biggie, separate 1 or 2 animals and you've got a mess on your hands. Lesson learned today....sort and separate at the working chute
