@@StoneyRidgeFarmer One small suggestion: If I am going to walk away from a small engine for more than a couple days, I crack the fuel cap. Just a little bit......The objective is to keep pressure or vacuum from forming in the tank. It's not fool proof, but it seems to help mitigate other problems down the road. Many fuel caps are "vented" for this exact reason. Some are not. And even the ones that are vented don't seem to do a great job of venting. So, I just crack the cap open. For what that's worth!

@@StoneyRidgeFarmerOne thought of encouragement, 2 stroke engines have been lubricating their bearings and cylinder walls for decades with gas/oil mixture. It would be ironic if that gasoline and crankcase oil cocktail was beneficial for break-in period. Hope everything works out 🤞

I only use ethanol free fuel in all my small engines and never had an issue in any equipment that I've used it in. The 10% ethanol fuel gums up all parts from your tank to engine, as well as it goes bad a lot quicker. I've had ethanol free fuel in equipment that sat for 6 to 8 months of not using it, the equipment fires right up. The ethanol fuel left in equipment where I live won't last more than 2 to 3 month before going bad. Ethanol free even goes into my duel sport motorcycle and it runs so much better.

Josh, if you're studying to be a pilot, and you eventually get your own plane, you'll soon find out about oil filter cutters! Champion and others make a tool that screws into the oil filter and has a cutter that spins around the outside of the can. This cuts the can off. You then cut out the filter element and spread it out on a paper towel. Shine a bright light on the filter element and look for shiny stuff! Unlike your grinder which makes metal debris, the specialized oil filter cutters don't make metal flakes! Keep us posted on your flying progress!! Be safe!! ✈️

Good recovery there, Josh. Happy it worked out for you. Good idea to cover it. Very educational video, thanks. If you’re going to burn that gas out tomorrow, I’d figure it’s ok. Most likely, you additionally should replace the fuel lines, from using ethanol-infested fuel. That black is deteriorated rubber (fuel lines), internally, just like the fuel pump diaphram. It doesn't take long for the ethanol to destroy rubber parts. I think the couple of metal flakes were from the sawzall cutting through the filter.

@ShaneZettelmier
@ShaneZettelmier 13 сағат бұрын
I kind of agree on the ethanol fuel. If you know you’re gonna use three tanks of gas, I think it’s fine to run the first two cheap fuel but the third one you want the non-ethanol. Ethanol absorbs water, and wherever that ethanol fuel sits whether it be a carburetor or a fuel injector or in that fuel pump it’ll attract a tiny bit of water and it will get organic growth there that will eat the rubber in the seals and leave that crusty white residue everywhere and it’s when you let it sit when you’re just running it through your engine it’s not really a problem because you’re burning it you’re using it and it’s not sitting But when you shut your engine off all that ethanol fuel gets a little bit of water in there and just has a little bit of separation and makes a little water droplets that help grow the organics and rust and oxidization and the engines were never designed to handle it. That’s why it’s fine to use it in your car because you’re driving it all the time you’re not letting it sit, but if you’re gonna let it sit for a while, always run non-ethanol fuel through the whole system. I’ve done that for years and never had a problem. I’ve got a 2004 John Deere with a Kohler engine on it and I always ran cheap fuel through it except at the end of the season I’d run non-ethanol and I put a valve on it so I could shut the fuel off and let it burn the fuel out of the system, so it wasn’t sitting in the carburetor And I fuel pump did go out, but it wasn’t leaking. It just stopped pumping and that was probably about 750 hours and the carburetor still clean as a whistle and I’ve never had to clean it but other things where I’ve let the ethanol fuel sit in there it just gets that white crusty film on it and it puts the metal and rust a little bit just because it’s got water in it And the engines aren’t made to have water in there. If you wanna get real intense with it, you can squirt a little ATF in there. I run a two-stroke mix and it will smoke like crazy cause it will be burning off the oil that you’re adding to the fuel but the ATF and the two-stroke oil is a nice oily coating all over everything as well, we used to squirt ATF in the carburetors as an after run oil when you store them for a while and it does come up, but as soon as gasoline hits it all that gum melts and when you start it back up after letting it sit for a long time, it’ll smoke for a minute and then it’s just like new again And that protects it from all the rust in the pitting and it keeps your lines from rusting up and getting clogged up. But as soon as you get gasoline on it, it melts and burns off and you’re all good again.

If you use gas station diesel, it is likely to grow alge while siting around. When not in use, cover fuel tank to insulate from sun heat and protect from light. The heat will help grow alge that plugs filters. Contaminated fuel is still good, but the slime will plug filters. Best is a filter mesh screen be for the filter. Then you can clean the screen and keep going.

Josh Ethanol gas started being used in 1978. Ethanol is hygroscopic, it absorbs water vapor directly from the atmosphere. Because absorbed water dilutes the fuel value of the ethanol and may cause phase separation of ethanol-gasoline blends (which causes engine stall), containers of ethanol fuels must be kept tightly sealed. Close the vent cap when not using.

Leaving gas in the system when not in use will cause over the winter will dissolve the rubber diaphragm like you see on your old one, even straight gas will deform it over time. When the new fuel came out we went to a class on it and for small engines and some older cars the 100% fuel is all need because the new fuel eats up full lines and all rubber parts on cars fuel injeciors are getting cloged up because the the liners in the metal fuel line it eats it up so yes get rid of all that fuel but the engine should be okay but you should have some wear as a normal thing but not to much the filter will always have some small debree in it so if not too much your fine

Josh, the ethanol fuel degrades some parts, in this case, maybe your diaphragm?? Even in the auto world, it cases damage from fuel cells/tanks, fuel lines, filters, hoses, injectors, and carbs. Some manufactures, have combatted a lot of this, some, have not. You should mention, yes, non ethanol is more expensive, but when you factor in the cost of the repairs, well, it's a no brainer. Esp small engines, when you really don't use that much, the cost is only a few bucks. The oil filter, it was told to me that most filters seals are now made to slightly swell, making it less likely to leak, and, that's why they are so difficult to get off. There are many tools out there now, to get the filter off, invest, and be happy about it. The one thing you didn't change, or, show that you changed is the fuel filter. I mean, when you looked into the tank, you said " I see yuckies in there" ! Change it! I hope there is no damage, bears usually survive, but, the oil washes down the cylinder walls, letting the oil/gas leak by. That's why it was smoking. Seems you dodged a bullet, I'm glad of that. At the very least, you aged your engine somewhat.

I’ve been seeing lots of buzzards, every time it’s been a dead deer. A friend let the steer suckle for 14mos, it was 1300lbs dead weight.

On our western Ozarks farm, the rancher has had black buzzards like we have around here get aggressive and actually start eating a live calf, stripping the loin from above. We can shoot those if they do that. We have always had Turkey buzzards with the red heads, and none of us had ever heard of that behavior from them. The black-headed ones are a recent arrival, and no one is very happy about it. I’ve seen only black ones here between you and me, but I saw Turkey buzzards up at Pilot Mountain, so they’re nearby too. Which one did the attack there by you?

Glad your engine is good & it was just the diagram in the fuel pump. Not really a good idea to run the fuel pump off the valve rocker, but that's US engineering for ya!

I would try disconnecting that pump and use an electric pump, so the gas couldn't get in the oil. The location of that pump seems like a recipe for disaster. Other brands of small engine manufacturers make a diaphragm pump that runs from vacuum from the engine if the engine has a vacuum line connection but the safest is an electric pump. I have a diesel tractor with an electric pump. The only problem I have had with 10% ethanol gas is that water condenses in the metal tank and the carburetor, causing rust. I use redcoat to coat the inside of the metal gas tank and turn off the gas letting the engine run out of gas to stop the engine with no problems since then.

You could always abandon that low pressure fuel pump on top of the valve cover and install an 12v electric fuel pump to feed the high pressure fuel pump. Wire it to the ign. switch so it comes on when you turn on the ign. switch. Then you would never have to worry about gas getting into the crankcase again. Millions of engines out there running on electric fuel pumps.

The Ethanol Alcohol is what is eating your diagram. When it dries out it will turn ROCK-HARD!!! FYI. NEVER use Ethanol Alcohol, in machines not designed for that particular fuel source. Ethanol Alcohol is known for eating up rubber products, gas lines, etc. Josh something you may want to do because you can go a long time between uses of you machine(s) always let the machine run out of fuel, in your case this small procedure will be your best friend. Chain saws, leaf blowers, Weed-Wacker's, etc. Part of the reason in running the machine out of fuel, is so *no gum can form* (in the carburetor's bowl) from the fuel evaporating, which clogs many different ports / needle valve, / air mixture ports, of the carburetor's, or cause the carburetor floats not to work properly.
