They had power generation of internal power and external power, meaning pivot power vs pure strength power. If you Max strength your punch while pivoting you can dislocate your shoulder. 6:29 - "why did karate fall off?" - it really depends on the style. Kyokushin karate(one of the styles that Michael Jai White practices) is said to be extremely effective. In all actuality karate(and Tai Kwon Do for that matter) fell off because of UFC. In the early days of the UFC Karate experts were getting destroyed by Muy Thai and Jujitsu experts, and once that happened Karate just fell out of favor.
@THEREALZENFORCE17 күн бұрын
In the early days of the UFC : UFC 1 Karateka Gerard Gordeau went finalist 2nd place, in other early UFC events karateka Bas Rutten and karateka Chuck Liddell were the UFC champions. Later Karateka GSP went UFC goat and Karateka Lyoto Machida also was UFC champion. So when was that time you claim ?
@J-S.P17 күн бұрын
Remind me again - who did Gordeau lose to? For that matter who did Keith Hackney lose to? Say whatever you want, but when it comes to MMA karate(while there are styles that can be *extremely* effective) is not the first style people think of when they want to learn - they look at jujitsu and muy thai, and go from there. I will say though that once fighters caught onto how to counter jujitsu(see Sakuraba) the mystique started to fade a bit.
@THEREALZENFORCE10 күн бұрын
@@J-S.P Royce Gracie won because they do not invite the then Karate MMA legends like Chris Dolman or Takashi Azuma or judo legends like Wim Ruska or David Douillet. Gordeau was not even near the best top 100 Karateka of his era. Also when you say jiujutsu that is basic Japanese version not Brazilian Jiujutsu. And it is Muay Thai not Muy Thai like you mispelled it. Sakuraba did not need to know to counter jiujutsu, he already did catch wrestling and shoot wrestling at world level, so he already was a world top level grappler. Wrestler and UFC world champion Dan Severn already would beat Brazilian Jiu Jutsu in the early UFC days. People who want to do competitve MMA nowadays should learn MMA directly and skip the other arts (Muay Thai, BJJ, Karate, Boxing, etc) because those arts have some flaws for MMA that fighters have to unlearn when the compete for MMA. Traditional martial artists have to unlearn things (so wasted time in their MMA careers) from their art when they do competitive MMA. The early MMA days are long gone, MMA is now it's own specific competitve martial art, you do not need to learn other specific martial arts (Muay Thai or BJJ) first if your goal is the be an MMA fighter, do not waste time you simply go in an MMA gym and learn MMA as a single martial art, plain and simple.
@THEREALZENFORCE10 күн бұрын
@ Learn only MMA over BJJ and Muay Thai if you want to be an MMA fighter who starts training without any martial arts background in 2025. The 90s and early 2000s are long gone, so is the old debate of which martial art is best, the answer is you only need MMA to do MMA competitions, the rest is lost time for MMA competitions. Other martial arts (Muay THai, BJJ, etc) are sill fun if you prefer them ovr MMA but then compete in these martial arts instead of MMA competitions. Specificity is king
