As a profesional bike mechanic, it drives me insane that so many believe they can improve on an essentially perfectly engineered device. The thing to remember is this: great engineering is when there is nothing left to take away, not when there is nothing left to add. The perfect bike is made up of three steel triangles with hub-and-spoke wheels. Anything else is personal preference.

@levidenniston529811 күн бұрын
Also, it’s pretty clear why this bike doesn’t work at all as a bike; someone thought the hollowed wheels looked cool and futuristic, and “designed” everything around it just for that one visual feature. There’s a reason why every use of a wheel of transportation has the wheel connected on the axis. Connecting a wheel to the bike by its perimeter has waaay more friction because that part of the wheel can’t stay in place like the axis does. That’s why there’s so much resistance on the wheel as opposed to a normal bike. I’m also guessing that there’s no way to lubricate well so that friction will always be there.
@fireice882811 күн бұрын
Also the axis only has to turn slowly to make the outer wheel go a long distance. With this design they have to keep launching the rim at high speed

Besides that, there's no disconnection between the DC motor and the pedals/wheels for coasting. Ton of resistance and noise. It's like those tiny little motors that they put on bicycles way back in the old days to power an incandescent bulb. They never got used because they put so much resistance on pedaling. It became quickly impossible to pedal anywhere.
@kyle895210 күн бұрын
@@KLondike5 That's called a dynamo, not a "motor", and they were used constantly. Still are, in fact. If you go in any bike shop in holland, belgium, germany, denmark etc they all have dynamos. The resistance is not very much unless you fucked up installing it - you are only trying to generate 3 Watts not replace a hydroelectric dam.
@KLondike510 күн бұрын
@kyle8952 I'm sure the new ones are fine and geared properly and don't need much effort & power to supply an LED. I just remember one on a vintage bike as a kid that was ridiculous. In a normal bicycle all the friction between the wheel and the frame is on small parts. This company managed to make wheels that have basically as much friction as possible.
@caballo950011 күн бұрын
It looks so slow lol compared to a regular bicycle with regular wheels and tires
@MikeOxolong11 күн бұрын
Friction doesn't depend on area. Just the normal force and coef. of friction. My guess is that the wheel exerts a high torque on the connection since it's off center and that makes the friction high.
@fireice882811 күн бұрын
Also, the magic of a bike is that by slowly spinning the axis at the center of the spokes, the outer wheel will spin fast. Beaming the entire rim around at 30mph instead is hilarious
@Alfred-Neuman11 күн бұрын
@@caballo9500 It's not important if it's slow, noisy and impossible to repair... The goal here is not to use it for transport, it's just another tool in your toolbox that you can use to impress the young guy who is living next to you. Eventually he's going to notice this thing and start a conversation with you about it. With a bit of luck your wife's gonna be at work during this moment and you'll be able to convince him to visit your bedroom to take a look at your secret collection of toys and lube bottles. This weird bike is actually the key that you always needed to finally be able to live the best moment of your life.
@IWillBeYourBottomGDaddy10 күн бұрын
It's not about small parts. Friction doesn't care about area. It's about the materials and the force pushing them together. I reckon the issue is that the rubber is touching a bunch of internal stuff and has a super high friction coefficient with basically anything

@simtexa10 күн бұрын
To be fair, I have seen variations of this for ex. quad bikes and snowmobiles. Even that, although highly specific for rough terrain, is still a vastly superior form of propulsion than these "hubless wheels". This idiot bike basically has all the drawbacks of having caterpillar tracks without any of the advantages, a true "worst of both worlds".
@Keksemann66610 күн бұрын
Nope, tracks have suspension and grip on the ground, thats basically just wheel without ball bearing or minimal contact zone. They maximized the contact in the wheel while keeping the low ground connection and making effective suspension impossible. Its the worst idea you can have and the people that supported it got scammed for their lack of common sense.

@Caldella10 күн бұрын
@@cliffy1524 Standard bikes (and most wheels in general) rotate from the center. This thing has an open center and rotates from the edge, almost like a circular version of a tank tread (except even tank treads have sprockets in the middle that rotate it). Basically, this requires a lot more friction to move compared to a standard wheel, and that + the motor working harder to make the friction = more noise. I'm assuming the airless tires also don't help.

I have an e-scooter. The wheels can be locked via a phone app. I still wont take it anywhere other than to work and back as parking it up anywhere else it would just be picked up and loaded into the back of a car. Due to the design it is incredibly tough to chain it up. Electronic wheel locks are not a secure method to rely on.

I feel like people just fail to understand when to use them. I have a wheel lock on my bike and I lock it when I stop by the 711 or familymart to grab my food on my way to work. When I am at home, it's secure and the same with work.
@caphowdy6668 күн бұрын
@@S1RLANC3 If you only use the electronic wheel lock where I work when "stopping off at a shop" it won't be there when you get back. As I say, due to the design of the scooter it is incredibly tough to find a physical security device that fits. This is why the only thing I can use it for is commuting. Unless a shop lets you take it in with you, it will be stolen. Same would go for most ebikes, but at least you can use physical devices on them.
