this is such a tired argument about Gon, he isn't some insane person with warped morality, he's a child who's hurt and struggling to understand nuance. full blown adults trying to take the high ground on gon's "morality" is out of hand in this community. I swear people just echo whatever anime analysis YT video they see.

@@roguesoul5051 Thats true, OP didnt say he was a normal kid though. Just a real one. The amazing thing about this anime is how character growth isnt connected to power growth. These kids have grown alot but its not like they have reached adulthood yet. Killua has matured alot more than Gon which is probably due to the extreme difference in social enviroment for him before the show and during. He has been forced to face his own self in a different way than Gon. Gons stubborness and relative success with it has in a way become his downfall this arc and I love it.

It's not that Gon disregards people that he doesn't personally care about, it's that he finds it unfair that Pitou can just go and kill someone he cares about but then can beg to protect someone else because in Gon's head she's an evil, unfeeling monster. He's having an inner battle over his morals and his rage because it rips up the image that he had been directing his rage at. We've been following Gon all this time with him being way too mature for his age but with this situation it has completely overwhelmed him, he hasn't had the life or training that Killua had so expecting him to act calm and rational in this situation is crazy.

@@calvineastburn He doesn't disregard them any more than the average shonen protagonist or even characters in the story, you also have to be a massive cunt or to have done someone really bad to be disregarded by him when death is involved. Also I said mature for his age, he's 12, not the usual 15/16+ you normally get. He's simple and not intelligent in life but that doesn't make him immature and he deals with situations at a level far above what he should be doing.

This episode has so so many layers of depth that is basically one of the best episodes in any production ever, this is the sum of all of the issues the characters are living within the HxH world. Gon was not mentally prepared for what being a hunter really was, he is just a child, and it was hinted since Yorknew City arc by none other than Gon himself when he told Killua that it was his job to do and say crazy stuff while Killua's was to stay cool and stop him. We cannot say that Gon was entirely guilty, from Gon's perspective it looked like Pitou was in fact hurting Komugi and that enraged Gon even more, specially to the person Gon considered a father since Kite was the person who gave Gon a goal, a meaning in life, and by the very first time Gon was actually in Kurapika's shoes. Being in a messed up situation like this in a short age and having access to an extremely powerful tool (his Nen) we can see that he is not being cautious or responsible for using it, he didn;t even care to save lives, he only cared to save Kite. 100/10 episode.

I love HxH because Gon is actually acting like a kid. Not more mature than he is. He behaves exactly like he would, his age, and due him growing up in a nice and loving environment in Whale Island. Killua is able to stay calm and acts more mature because of his past torture and his whole upbringing and family situation. Kids that grew up in war torn countries will be more mature than their age like Killua but normal kids would have been more like Gon. " @ozzcoremidmx8287 Gon was not mentally prepared for what being a hunter really was, he is just a child" I agree

You understood the character well, but Gon is not a sociopath. I don't like how some people put Gon in the same place as Eren and Light, he is a child with dubious morals and absurd power, all his feelings in these episodes are valid, Pitou is still someone to be stopped, he would still kill millions if the king ordered it, while from that moment on there is the possibility of her changing... it's a very complex situation, one of the key points in the writing of hunter x hunter, so summing up everything to Gon being wrong and being a sociopath doesn't feels right to me.

But they explained why they think that way. If Gon reason to kill Pitou was that, because it is a threat to the world or because killing Kogumi gave then an edge over the King in the mission, his reason would be somewhat justified. But He wants to kill Pitou out of revenge, even if at this time there was a chance to save Kite (his original goal). He wants to save Komugi when it serve to his pourpose to fight, but when he learn that Pitou is healing her, he is ok to turn Komugi as a casualty out of spite. His best friend is a ex assasin, but when they met He didnt care about that. Killua in the story could be killing a bunch of innocent people if he wanted to follow his family business but as long as Gon consider him a friend He wouldnt move a finger.

I don't see Gon's anger here as hypocritical at all, as wrong as it might be. To me, it seemed that his anger was coming from having someone ask for virtue when they themselves didn't do the same when they had the choice to do so. Having someone ask for mercy, self-control, and compassion when they themselves didn't have a shred of it when they hurt others-that kind of contrast can cause so much anger and bitterness that doesn't leave much room for reason. It's essentialy the same as with the saying "those that live by the sword die by the sword" it's not about life or death; it's about having the nerve to ask for something you haven't given others when you had that same choice. As always loved your reaction and waiting for the next one.

Their objectives don't really matter, since it has been established since the beginning of the arc how vicious and bloodthirsty ants are. They will do their duty to protect the queen/king and colony when they have to but will kill for the fun of it the rest of the time even at the risk of hierarchy collapse of the colony such as the case with colt and rammot, while colt killed to protect and serve rammot killed for the pleasure of it even going as far as staking his victims rather than taking them as food for the queen there are few exceptions like colt and meleoron but the majority of ants just enjoy the killing. the same holds true with pitou from the moment it was born it sought to kill, and it was never shown that it did it to protect the king rather it did it because it enjoyed the fight and the kill so much so that it tried to bring kite back from the dead just to fight again. It was always bloodthirsty and the only reason it suppressed its blood thirst was not to endanger the king. Sorry for the long reply I kinda rambled on .@@axllopez337

omg Lindsay's point around 19:00 was SOOO GOOD Also Lindsay having seen through Gon from the beginning is like parallel to how Togashi saw Gon in the beginning for his developments. There was an interview where he admits that he always thought Gon was not right in the head based on the motivations he wrote for him and it's fascinating how the hints were sprinkled in ever so slightly throughout the series. You guys mentioned Wing but then there's also Zepile the auctioneer calling him dangerous because of his biased curiosity, Green Island dodgeball game where he was perfectly okay with the pain Killua was feeling (and he was too) but never taking the time to confirm his emotional state, or when Kite was seriously doubting Gon's view about not caring for those who call each other trash and quoted internally asking "what happens if you meet an ant who cares for another?". In hindsight all of this now is obvious but during the journey of watching Gon's development, his naive innocence largely overshadowed this side of him because everything ended up being okay and "morally" fine in the end which I think is where most people find this behavior jarring due to the HIGH stakes and very real threats both Gon and Killua are facing.

16:25 Yup, exactly. Kids have a harder time understanding other people's perspective. There was an experiment of this in real life. Gon only sees his perspective. Only the people important to him are important. You only begin to see all sides when you mature and Killua is more mature because he had to because of his upbringing and being tortured. It makes sense for Gon to behave more like a kid because he's never experienced loss and difficulty before losing Kite, he was a happy kid on Whale Island

People calling gon a monster, i would say more like a human. Saying he is hypocrite for caring more for kite than komugi, but everyone is like this who do you care more for your best friend or family life? Or some random person? How many people the king already kill? And we didn’t care they wasn’t important but komugi we saw her more we got to know her because of that people think gon is hypocrite if instead of komugi was a random person that we didn’t know, i am sure that 100% of the watchers would be “go gon fuck them up” “ you can trust pitou, pitou would definitely kill you when it can”. And don’t forget the trust too, gon don’t trust pitou so after finish to him, he will just wait to pitou do whatever he want? Wait 1 hour in a enemy territory? For someone that you don’t trust a bit heal someone you don’t know. If was in other scenario people would call the person that wait dumb. Pitou is stronger than gon and killua they didn’t have a chance in a fair fight. And if they lose they believe that more that millions of people would die

Damn, Lindsay popped OFF on the discussion this time lol. You can tell how invested and validated she felt because she went 100 miles a minute for like 7 minutes straight. It’s like what Carson said, when you come from the very positively-tinged shows of shounen to something a bit more seinen, it’s easy to not think this is how Gon’s character will turn out. For me, I took a lot of the warning signs just as the rationale of a child at Gon’s age. Without any real parenting to speak of and given an immense amount of ever-increasing power, I think this is a very logical trajectory for the character. Because it’s a story though, it’s easy to think on it in a meta way, and assume the writer won’t be quite so logical about the fallacies the main character would fall into. Anywho, great reaction to a great episode!

My absolute favorite episode of HxH; Gon’s descent is legitimately my favorite development in a main character in all of anime, I love it so much. I also love how heart-pumping the scene is despite not even a single punch being thrown the entire episode. And yet, at the same time, I’m so goddamned relieved to _finally_ find a reaction to it that isn’t literally cheering Gon on the whole way through, as if him essentially throwing what amounts to a tantrum and being a prick to his best friend somehow makes him a “badass”, completely missing the point that Gon is supposed to look like the bad guy in this scene in contrast to Pitou here. Because, when you really break it down, Gon really only cares about the people that he _personally_ cares for, and often sees situations in moral absolutes (good/bad, right/wrong) depending on how blatant or beneficial they are to him- like how Gon will literally make peace with _serial killers_ (Binolt) if they benefit him in the moment, yet feel zero remorse in exterminating Chimera Ants if they mock the deaths of their “friends” (something even Kite pointed out as being a ”dangerous” way of thinking). Tunnel vision morality like that is how a child sees the world, and that’s kind of the point with Gon’s character. It’s also like a lot of other reactors just completely stop caring about Komugi’s life on the line in favor of the short-term gratification of Gon beating the shit out of Pitou (while also completely ignoring Pitou’s most genuinely benevolent moment in the series), which has always really bugged me whenever other reactors get to this episode. Like, Kite knew the risks that lead to his death, and was prepared to face them. Komugi, meanwhile, is an innocent girl who didn’t ask for any of the shit she goes through, and to be completely honest, I feel like Kite would be rooting against Gon here for prioritizing him so heavily while completely shunning the reality of the situation. It isn’t “fair” like Gon says, but unlike most Shonen protagonists, the world they’re operating in doesn’t change based on what’s “fair”, and that’s what I love about HxH. But yeah, I’m so goddamn glad y’all don’t ignore Gon’s problematic and hypocritical behavior- something immensely rare with other reactors. Carson and Lindsey actually understand the nuances of this show, and goddamn is it so immensely refreshing to see. 👍

that's not what Kite mean, Gon didn't hesitate because those had no respect for their friends, and that was a good thing, not on a moral standpoint, but on a tactical standpoint for the mission, the issue was, what will happen if an ennemy would be worthy of respect, would Gon still be able to do what need to be done ? in the end, the path of Gon would never expose the issue, but the path Knuckkles will, after the battle against youpi, Knuckkle wasn't able to fight him anymore, because he respected him.

People like to say he's a 'monster' (probably bc it sounds cool idk) but don't understand what it means or Gon's character at all, even though everything is in the dialogue First of all, the word in JP translated as monster "kaibutsu" doesn't have the same meaning as the ENG word (btw trivia: about DrBlythe Gon uses the word "bakemono" also translated as monster, it shows that translation can't be 100% accurate to the original meaning), but even if the translation is kinda misleading, it just makes sense for Gon to experience those very human emotions given the trauma he just went through IRL if your friend or family member just got killed (worse! you think it's your fault bc they protected you) and the killer used their body for sick experiments so they're not even dead but their soul is gone only the destroyed body left...and if you had hope that you can still fix it by catching the killer but then the killer begs you to show compassion bc they have to save their precious person... well basically if you just put yourself in Gon's shoes in that situation I believe anyone would go crazy Gon's reaction and words "WTH??! How dare you? it's unfair...why should I care for your feelings when you didn't care about the person you killed and those who cared about him??" it totally makes sense and this is a human response, no animal/beast/monster would feel that kind of emotion... He's going through the worst kind of grief/trauma and he's a 12 years old kid experiencing this for the first time, in the HxH world which makes the whole situation even crazier When people are grieving and going through the anger phase they often say hurtful words to other people bc they believe no one understand what they're going through and they're right, it's a very personal thing... even 2 people going through the same loss, like a dad and a mom losing their child or 2 kids losing a parent or 2 persons losing a common friend, would react differently. Gon is right, Killua is able to stay levelheaded bc his feelings towards Kite are different, he's feeling Gon's pain more then anything really.... so he's able to stay calm and reasonable and see that listening to Pitou is the better option... but Gon is too affected ...and even in that state he's self-aware! he realizes that he's not in the right state of mind but he doesn't want to be reasonable in that moment bc it hurts too much he even thought Pitou was torturing Komugi and got those images of what possibly happened to Kite (it's a double trauma to actually be able to picture what exactly happened to Kite) Pitou wants the king to stay "who he is"....hearing those words when Kite is not himself anymore bc of Pitou has to drive Gon crazy with anger...Pitou who still barely understands human emotions ("this thing") doesn't realize the audacity of those words When he started his jajanken Gon was already thinking "I don't care anymore", forgetting that he wanted to keep Pitou alive long enough to heal Kite.. he's GONe, not able to think anymore... here is the prologue of his physical transformation, but he still stopped bc of Killua's words! so Killua was definitely useful and important..sadly he wasn't there the 2nd time... Gon is a "kaibutsu" bc he's able to do THAT! with nen, bc of his extraordinary potential, not bc he's not human inside or a psycho What he said to Killua wasn't ok (glad he apologized later), saying that he "has it easy" and that he doesn't care was mean, but I understand he wasn't in a good place at the moment having to swallow his rage for Kite's sake... Grieving is harder for the one who's the closest to the deceased(=Gon), but those around(=Killua) suffer as well bc they care and have no idea how to help or ease the pain.... that's just how it is! Killua is a great friend. Gon is not a bad friend he's just suffering too much. The writing of this episode is god-tier bc the emotions are so relatable and the VAs did an outstanding job!

This might be where a lot of this conversation breaks down: Psychopaths are still human. Animals can still feel love and pain and trauma. (Gon is often compared to or likened to animals as are all good Hunters) And the behaviour of children can often be psychopathic because they haven't had time to properly integrate with society. In fact Gon's entire character, if not the entire world of hunter x hunter is based on the rejection of societal expectation, which is what socializes children. So Gon rejects this, and then gains the power of an adult without having to grow emotionally in order to balance this. Comparing Gon's transformation to Kurapika's Emporer time against Uvo really brings Gon's lack of morality into question. Even Kurapika felt sick. Gon has been through trauma, he is reacting in a very biased way to this imagery. Which yes is fair if the person who killed someone you love was in front of you, you'd have some things to say at the very least lol Gon is going through a rough time, that doesn't make him a psychopath. The reason people liken him to a psychopath is because he does not often consider the lives of those who are not kind to him and more than a few times shows a lack of concern towards the past transgressions of murderers and other psychopaths. The only times he takes issue with such things, is when it directly affects himself or those closest to him. If it doesn't he could not spare a thought to the victims or the transgressors negative impact. He doesn't just ignore these things, what's significant is his complete lack of awareness of them. He does not forgive murderers for murdering, he does not think of them as such beyond his experience with them. If he didn't see it, it didn't happen unless it affects him. This is what a child does. But if someone thinks or behaves this way as an adult, they could be referred to as a psychopath. Definitions of Psychopath and Sociopath are very tenuous when talking about fictional character, since their actions are predetermined by the author, and both are classified as Behaviour Disorders, meaning you're not examinine how their brain works so much as how they interact with the world, so it's really just a buzzword in this context anyway.

Gon is undergoing into the 5 stages of grief, this is the first time he's experienced someone dear to him died, ... we've seen denial before with him saying kite is still alive. I don't think he's a psycho.. more on just full of curiosity with things, he grows up in an isolated island with him not knowing internet or even joystation aka Playstation in their world, that is why when killua said before that he's an assassin he didn't bat an eye. And with his conversation before with the chameleon when he said he'll trust him but if he bettays him it'll be easy on him to get at him, remember with the bomber before he trusted him first then the bomber went for his throat

it's always people judging Gon to be a monster freak after this ep, while all i see is someone who wants to eliminate the creature that did all the horrible things to Kite, you have to remember how much important Kite is to Gon, Gon considered Kite to be the piece that will lead him to Ging, and now that Kite is no longer there, Gon must felt really terrible not to mention when they saw the controlled Kite and how it was a frightening moment to a 12 yo kid, and then you wanted Gon to trust pitou who is nothing but a monster to all the hunters involved in the arc. how could you wait while all it takes is one order from the king to kill everybody! would you wait then or proceed your mission? also Gon actually asked Pitou to get away from the girl and fight him, if he was a monster he would just not care and kill her from behind, like how normally any human will do in a fight or war. Anyways that's just my view and I love the reaction nonetheless
@Rei-Maon
@Rei-Maon 10 ай бұрын
You're kinda right but remember, Gon also is 100% capable of forgiving people that did horrible things as long as they didn't do anything to him or his friends, he isn't a full monster like a lot of people like to say, but he does have something odd inside his head, he's mad AF with Pitou and only Pitou because of Kite but imagine if Pitou never killed Kite and he was still fine, he would only be in this mission because Kite would be and not because he really wanted to. I don't like to clasify Gon as a "monster" but more like an "animal", he sees everything with curiosity and likes to adventure but if someone or something messes with his "pack" he would throw all hapiness out the window and over focus on going for the attacker's neck with all he has.

Remember, in the original version, Gon spends much more time with Kite, he wasn’t just some guy he met once years ago. He was the one who gave Gon his goal. Gon has known Kite longer than Killua, but just because you don’t know someone very well, doesn’t mean you don’t care what happens to them. (Especially if it’s someone important to your best friend.) Because they shortened Gon and Kite’s interactions, it can make Gon’s anger seem over dramatic or out of nowhere.

The narrator was spot on. because of Pitou's lack of resistance, Gon was left without a clear target for this immense rage he has been cultivating for so so so long. I honestly can't imagine something more frustrating. And it perfectly shows in the animation, the voice acting, the mix bewteen sadness and rage. This was such a beautiful scene. Also it perfectly shows how much Gon has changed. Gon from episode one who would help anybody and knows all life is precious, has been corrupted by the guilt and rage of letting Kite die. Amazing story telling.

Gon is unfamiliar with loss, its because of pain and also lack of any discipline and getting his way all the time he didnt have proper stoppers. Combined with the inly father like figure in his life. I dont see Gon as everyone says as evil or irrational. Togashi knows exactly how to portray someone fighting their raw emotions unprepared for the first time. Seeing it flare over and over because its easy to give into it. Its crazy how relatable this is. Its definitely a lack of experience and maturity that can't be placed on Gon. You can't expect a child holding a sword to be responsible and then call him a tyrant when he hesitates in his first complex encounter.

Gon has his own perception of what's good or bad but he never understood what's right or wrong and he's now the most dangerous and unpredictable character in the whole series. On the other side, Killua is so hurt hearing Gon's words because he's smarter and wiser while considering Gon as his only true friend and trying to save him before losing control and becoming a monster. This episode has maybe the most intense scene that has been made in anime !!

Gon is someone who do anything for the people that matter to him example when Gon woke up he confronted Killua's old brother without thinking of his own safety and when Killua failed the Hunters exam it was Gon, Kurapika and Reece who risked their lives to bring Killua back. We must remember Kite is like a father figure to Gon and sometimes Killua's background as an assassin makes him poor as reading emotions as a friend Killua should have picked up that now is not the time to be cool and calm about someone who hurt someone you love(Kite).

their interaction when he was young was much more in depth than this version of the anime depicts, but its also that Kite represented a connection to his dad that made Gon feel more connected to his own roots. Kite was Gon's cool Uncle or older Cousin that taught him a lot and could have guided him a lot more than he did, but that was taken too soon. And as we see at the end of the show: Gon hooks back up with Kite's crew, to help them with all the work they do over there.
