Unfortunately, Gon is still a child who has a very black and white perception of morality. A monster has done something horrible to someone he loves and he can’t understand why he can’t get revenge for this act. It’s understandable but at the end of the day the reason killua is more level headed than Gon is because he had to mentally mature much earlier than him because of family reasons.

The most interesting part of this on the rewatch is that it all leads on from what Kite said all the way back at the start of the arc. "But that's exactly what worries me. What if we encounter some of them who do care about their comrades? What will you do then?" Here we see exactly how difficult the situation is for Gon, he had it set in his mind that Pitou was this monster who was pure evil and didnt care for anything, but now we see that no, she is also more complex than that.
@CP110
@CP110 4 жыл бұрын
she really isn't complex. if it was the kings wish to kill Komugi she would do it in a heart beat, the only thing on her mind is to please/protect the king. Granted the other side to Pitou is she likes to play and toy with lives. Shes a sadistic evil creature with unyielding loyalty to the king that's it. The only reason she didn't get attacked right then and there is because Gon and Killua want her to "heal" kite. The Chimera ants are so dangerous that they are worth taking out even at the expense of human lives.

@@CP110 Imo she's still complex enough to be comparable to a human being as she's willing to go as far as to harm herself just to carry out the king's request. To care for someone so much that she'll harm herself to heal someone who supposedly means nothing to her just b/c that individual's important to the king. This means she has emotions. Just like humans and not just some killing machine who "likes to play and toy with lives" at this point in time of the story. As in, she's a changed creature who now "cares about their comrades," as the op stated, who didn't before. With that, it brings complexity. She may have a simple motive, but that doesn't mean she's any less complex. "The Chimera ants are so dangerous that they are worth taking out even at the expense of human lives." So...it's okay to sacrifice innocent lives just for the greater good? This makes me kind of question humanity now and wonder who's actually the lesser evil, just saying.

@@CP110 She revealed the reason she is so desperate to save Komugi here: Komugi is important for keeping the King the way he is. If he lost her, he'd change. In other words, she likes the fact that he has finally found someone to make him happy and is completely okay with the changes the King has gone through. If the King told her to kill Komugi, she'd be conflicted because she knows that deep down the King himself is currently going through a balancing act, and she knows that killing Komugi would make him "cease to be who he is." It's the reason she's so desperate here. So it's clearly more than just what the king orders her to do. She's completely caught on to what Komugi does to the king - whether the King is okay with it or not (the King himself is not even sure), and definitely would not instantly kill Komugi without a second thought just because the King was having one of his moments where is he unsure if he wants to kill Komugi or not. She actually wants the human side that Komugi brings out of him to win, not the ant side. Now, obviously if the King was never affected by Komugi in the first place, literally never cared for her and told Pitou to kill her, then yeah, Pitou would. But that's pretty much irrelevant to the point, because the changes the King went through was enough to somewhat change Pitou's mentality regarding how important Komugi is to the King's development. So I think it's very likely that she would hesitate and question why the King wants her dead, because she'd be scared it would revert him back and he'd lose himself as a result (again, literally her words that she doesn't want him to revert - that's a way more "thinking for yourself" mind set to have than just "listen to whatever the king says." She wouldn't have said that if she weren't thinking for herself and had her own bias). Basically, Togashi gave us insight into all three of the royal guard during the "what is my name?" scene with The King. Pouf thinks that his name is simply "the King." He needs no other name: he is fine as he is, he should be the unchanged and unquestionable ruler of the Chimera Ants and all other living things and he should "follow the proper order." Youpi states he doesn't know, it's beyond his station. Showing a more neutral and less philosophical position. A soldier waiting for orders. Youpi has no bias or agenda or a way he thinks the King really should act. Though ultimately if he is convinced something is a problem for the King he will eliminate it. Pitou, however, mentions that he should pick a name that he prefers. That his feelings are what matter the most.This represents how deep down, she want the King to truly be happy, no matter what path that takes him down, even if it is a path the King himself isn't sure about. She's that very, very supportive parent that thinks you should be following true happiness, and doesn't care what is "supposed to be" but rather how you feel about the matter deep down. Even feelings that you may be wanting to repress. She noticed the changes Komugi was having on the King, but it never fully clicked until she saw Komugi injured and saw the King say he is counting on her. Once that happened, she realized what Komgui is for the king: a chance at true happiness. The type of happiness people only get to dream about. She applied her own "super supportive parent bias" and came to the conclusion that Komugi is what is best for the King. She was able to see it all in that moment, so she cries. She cries that the King actually has found someone that truly makes him happy. She trusts her instincts on the matter, realizing that Komugi and the changes the King have gone through are completely in line with the "feelings matter the most" bias that she has. If the King told her to kill Komugi she would probably think he is full of shit, and disagree with him. Not after that moment. She'd be a parent calling the kid out on their bull. There's no way she'd just let him drop true fulfillment that easily. So yeah, not the most complex character but not exactly simple black and white. She's still a newborn just like the rest of the CA's and in a different circumstance her "your feelings matter the most" mentality is certainly something that could be applied in a more positive way, especially with a Komugi + Meruem combo. Out of all the royal guard, she probably has the best chance of changing into a better person with experience and seeing the rest of the world, through Meruem and Komugi. Her sense of empathy is probably the best of the three. Her insight is actually impressive. Worse-case scenario, if Meruem wasn't a thing and she was just born with no king, she'd be a Hisoka. Traveling the world looking for worthy opponents to kill. The best I could see her becoming is a "consensual" killer: that is, she matures enough to the point where she only kills those who are willing to fight and willing to die in battle, as well as those who are strong enough to interest her. But yeah, she'd still be a Hisoka-like Blood Knight killer nonetheless. She described her and Kite's fight like a wonderful dance. Her hobby or dream would definitely be to just be a fighter. She's obviously willing to commit great evil for her King, but it's really never been shown that she particularly likes her job. I doubt she feels one way or the other when she's killing random villagers for the selection. She doesn't just like to play or toy with just anyone's lives, either. She likes to have good fights. She's interested in the strong. She's no different than Hisoka in that regard. The reason she did that to Pokkle was purely practical (RIP mah boi Pokkle) =^(. And the reason she did that to Kite was because she wanted to fight him again. Kite was her first fight, and to her was such an amazingly great battle that she wanted to bring him back. So being a naive newborn she figured she could just do exactly that. Her power basically didn't do exactly what she wanted. She wasn't planning to turn him into that, it just worked out that way (and I know this because turning him into that makes it so she can't have that orgasmic fight she wanted- too puppet-like, so by default she was clearly trying to just genuinely revive him with no issues at first). I do always wonder if she would have killed him again after the second fight or not. I have no reason to think she wouldn't but at a certain point he's just going to refuse to fight her after being brought back so many times, lol. Perhaps that's why she delved into mind control, so that wouldn't be an issue. She's not a good person or being or whatever you want to call her. But acting like she is the incarnation of pure evil and that there are no hints at redemption I think just seems objectively wrong. That mentality might stem mostly from bias due to not liking her because of what she did to Kite, but I'm not entirely sure.

@@CP110 i disagree with this assessment and david's post pretty much nails why on point. Even pouf makes note of her changes in the brief time during the invasion. The King's nen laid bare their truest intentions to everyone around him when komugi was wounded. This moment of revelation is one part of the reason why Pitou cried at the scene which is so uncharacteristic of her before this. Pitou loved the King and by extension felt what is dear to Meruem also a sense of connection to Komugi. A nice loose parallel to this is Ikalgo's strong feelings to find and rescue Palm because "she is a friend of a friend". If that kind of resolve is that strong on Ikalgo to someone he's never met, just imagine what that feeling must be like to Pitou.

A way I always thought about it was the King was recently born, so he acted a lot from a egocentric point of view like a child because he’s almost literally a child to the world being recently born. As time goes on he started learning and became more aware of emotions, the world, and essentially became more human. It’s easy to forget the King has only been alive for a short time.

When Gon told Killua that his goals meant nothing to him, that had to be the most emotional pain Killua had ever experienced in his entire life. The torture from his family could never compare to this, because no one can hurt you in the way your loved ones do. Killua last thoughts before nearly dieing was "Sorry Gon, I'm sorry I wasn't more useful to you". This shows that Killua values Gon's happiness and well being even over his own life. Killua has done nothing but be loyal to Gon. His entire character motivation up to this point has been to be friends with Gon and help him achieve his goals, yet now his being rejected by perhaps his only true close friend in the world. What an incredible parallel between Gon and Meruem as well. Meruem, one of the"bad guys", is becoming more and more human as he finally appreciates and begins to depend and trust in those most loyal to him (Pitou, Pouf, Youpi) actively protecting and valuing his loved ones, while, our heroes, specifically Gon begins to tear down all of the most important relationships in his life by pushing away his most loyal follower in Killua. How smart of Togashi to show Killua's near death experience before this moment so that we could fully understand how hurtful Gon's words were. Togashi is a brilliant writer. Here's hoping he finishes this masterpiece.

At around 17:24, you discuss about how the King is bad/evil. But you should also consider the fact that our judgement of this is based on human morals and values. All the reasons you mentioned as to why he's evil doesn't really seem evil when we look at it from his perspective. I think this is mentioned somewhere before in the show too. Think about it as when humans kill other species for things like meat, fabric, leather, etc or when we kill bugs, squash mosquitoes or step on ants as you walk. From the king's point of view, it's just a superior species using an inferior species for its own needs just like we humans do.

Personally, I don’t think Gon even gave a second thought to Komugi until Pitou started talking about her. A major part of Gon’s moral compass is that everything exists in black and white, completely relative to his own interests. If someone helps him/his friends, then he considers them good, completely separate from everything else they’ve done. And the same is true for the opposite, if someone hurts his friends, nothing else matters. That person is bad. Zepile, the counterfeiter from the Auction arc and one of the people who had a “I sense a beast” monologues about Gon, pointed this out directly and it’s demonstrated pretty clearly in the Greed Island Arc. Everyone remembers Genthru, the fact that he was a mass murderer and the fact that Gon hated him, an instance where Gon’s morality coincidentally coincided with common morality. But before the ultimate conflict with him, we also see Gon interact very amicably with two other mass murderers (even after he finds out about the evil things they’ve done): Razor and Binolt. Razor is weird, because Gon only learns about the fact that he’s a murderer after he already has an established relationship with him. But Gon learns that Binolt is a mass murderer well before he interacts with him (and is still attempting to murder children) and never even bats an eye. Because Binolt didn’t harm him personally. That’s also why Gon had such a strong reaction to her declaration that she’s going to protect Komugi because she’s important to someone important. That’s the same justification for everything he’s ever done, and it’s the first time he’s had to evaluate his own moral compass. He is ultimately a self-centered child, which isn’t necessarily bad (we all go through that), but it’s far from the paragon that the show has tried to convince you he was up until this point.

I don't think the show ever tries to convince people that he's a paragon. If anything, the show is constantly seeding Gon's selfishness and flawed moral compass throughout, leading up to what we have here. He straight up tells Killua when they're trapped by Nobunaga that he's the only one who gets to act foolish in the relationship, he has some level of awareness of his own flaws, but this event with Kite threw everything out because it pushed him past his breaking point.

@@Darkscoper Hell, as early as the Hunter Exam he used the swordsman as a decoy to steal Hisoka's tag instead of warning the guy and saving his life. But he's never been above using people for his own selfish desires, despite his protests otherwise.

Darkscoper The reason I use that phrasing is that even though it’s obvious on multiple watch throughs, it definitely isn’t obvious the first time watching (like most things about the series). Having this episode as context radically changes how you can read his other actions. And even though there are plenty of places you can point to to explain Gon’s morality, they are usually overshadowed by other more prominent instances where Gon’s morality coincides with a paragon morality. With the phantom troupe in the auction arc, there are plenty of examples, like the conversation while they’re captured. But the main emphasis is that Gon hates the troupe. On the surface, it seems like a reasonable reaction, as they’re inherently evil, but Gon doesn’t care about that. His hatred towards them is mostly based on Kurapika’s hatred, seeing how he’s reacted to other people that have committed similarly evil acts. And like I said before, even though there were examples with Binolt and Razor, the emphasis of the greed island arc was on Genthru, the one instance where Gon’s morality is in line with that of a paragon. You can definitely predict this episode if you’re paying close attention, but the show does a lot to make you focus on other things if you aren’t looking for hints that relate directly to this character arc.

"Is your pride all you care about?! Even more than your life?! Is it some kind of weird rush to hold out in the face of impossible odds?!" - Hanzo, ep. 19 "Master, I may have awakened an incredible beast." - Wing, ep. 30. "Now I understand why this kid interests me. He doesn't care about right or wrong... Innocent curiosity! He opens his mind to everything that impresses him, right or wrong. Which means that he's dangerous... Someone who can never truly be appraised." - Zepile, ep. 48. "Yeah, he wears his emotions on his sleeve, and when he's angry, he forgets about consequences. "He is a monster." -Razor ep.71 "This kid, he's insane!" - Genthru, ep. 74 "The look... the look in this kid's eyes... Yes, this is why I had a hunch... There is something special about this kid." - Meleoron, ep. 101 And more and more... i wanna repost this in other episode btw (you know, you know) but in this ep. we know who is Gon, just a selfish child who doesn't know how to act, we undertood why Gon is in rage but... we never saw Gon's character and his way of thinking, we always saw Killua's thoughts but never Gon's thoughts, that gives us to think that maybe he was never a good boy. "might need to break you own neck pitou" *Breaks her arm* That's the moment they finally realized this moment is way far more serious then they thought. Gon is far passed the point of logic and reason. Do you think the gon of the past would completely ignore the presence of a dying girl and attack someone in the middle of an operation? Pitou who begged, NOT for her life, but just for MORE TIME and broke its arm to prove that they were 100% genuine, Gon almost attacked that kind of vulnerable person will all his might? This is extremely concerning for the normally cheerful Gon to be this way. Killua's expression is very tragic. He knows his friend is right in front of him. But he feels like he's completely gone.

@MegaJf16 He was an assassin, someone who was hired to kill people by those who had the money for it. We don't know if any of those he killed were "innocent" or not, only that they were killed, and none of them were prepared for it, as Killua himself said at the end of the Greed Island arc, so its not like they were killed in an environment where both people willingly put their lives on the line in combat. Plus he killed those two men at the beginning of the Hunter Exam after having his little tantrum from not being able to catch Netero's ball. Yeah they were the aggressors, but for all we know they were nothing more than "tough guys" or bullies, certainly nothing worth killing someone over. There's a reason they didnt kill Genthru and his buddies during the Greed Island arc. It's not that they're above killing them, its that they know their own hands aren't clean either. They realize not everything's as black and white as it seems on the surface.

👍👏This why I was telling y'all way back to stick with the show! Look how the comment section is flooded brilliant philosophic discussion of personal & social ethics. Killua who initially seemed cold & cruel is now level headed and wise. While Gon who looked like a oasis of innocence, love and compassion is now a single minded demon hellbent on revenge. Thus if you're naive enough to quickly label others as good or bad without hesitation, with minimum effort to understand other people's motives and the frame of reference they use, you will become those you despise. It becomes clear that Killua's way of approaching with a caution, observing them, then weighing their merits is better than Gon's method of assuming that everyone is angel or a demon. Gon would have shown no mercy to octupos or meleoron for being a "bad/evil", whereas Killua was able to see their virtues, connected with them and got them to switch sides. There are many ants that find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place, while simply trying to survive, just like there are sinister members on the human side who only intend to further their own malevolent objectives. Perhaps that is what the tittle foreshadows(Hunter x Hunter). Two apex predators (human vs ant) pursuing their self righteous goals at all cost. This depth while exploring fundamental real life dilemmas is why I'm hooked on anime!

I feel like people who think that have lost perspective. They're only thinking in terms of Gon, Komugi, Pitou, and Kite. And sure, on that level, Gon is in the wrong here because he'd be ending two innocent lives just for revenge. But this isn't just about those four. Literally millions of human lives are at stake here. Maybe Gon's motivations are wrong but killing Pitou here would've absolutely been the right choice because it would've been taking a crucial opportunity towards saving a large number of lives.

Right here, in this moment, pitou was trying to save someone and gon was trying to kill someone, or at least stop pitou from saving komugi. Empathy could easily be felt for both sides (pitou because of the genuine humanity that she is currently showing and gon because of what he’s been through/his mental state) but just because we understand gons feelings, does not mean that we can justify his actions. It’s clear to me who was the monster and who was the victim here.

@@wallstarr True, her motives may not be for a just cause or morally appropriate, but at least her actions are still displaying her "humanity." Furthermore, what defines humanity? Personally, I believe emotions play a large part in this factor since this is what makes humans distinctive from other animals, so Pitou seems pretty "human" in my eyes for going to the extent of harming herself in order to be of assistance to the person she cares greatly for. Yes, it's for selfish reasons, but humans are selfish beings as well. Imo Gon has always been a rather selfish kid. He can befriend/forgive serial killers and such but then gets ruthless for those who harms his friends? Kind of hypocritical. If we're only referring to their actions, Gon is currently displaying a more "monstrous" or morally questionable behavior than Pitou is at the moment with him wanting to cause harm and her wishing to heal an innocent being. Yes, he's but a child, but isn't Pitou technically even younger than that biologically? Thus, there's still room for growth, just like all living organisms have. Imo both have childlike morality. As you stated, Gon only cares about ppl that matter him and not those who he doesn't know. Well, the same could be said for Pitou.

Gon had gone against his own nature and actually hated someone, he built Pitou up as an irredemable villain with no redeeming qualities, channeling his anger into strength for near a month all under the image of a villanous Pitou. Seeing the object of his hatred, the reason why he contradicted his very nature, botteling up his pent up fustrations all for the purpose of venting it into it suddenly care for its comrade made Gon snap. This is what Kite feared, what WILL you do if you meet an ant that cares for its comrade? the answer seemed to be, to break down. Gon's true nature would be to emphasize with Pitou, he is an autist who does not see good and evil as concepts, but as personal qualities. To him, if someone is interesting their actions are less important as compared to how stimulating they are, how he can emphasize with them and learn from their unique perspective, no matter how warped. He shut off that part of him, sacrificed it to allow himself to see things as black and white for the purpose of revenge. Gon broke down because he contradicted himself.

Really odd in my opinion to see some people in the comments saying that pitou and all the other chimera ants are "monsters without humanity" it kinda feels to me like theyve missed a major part of this arc, hell the later half of the arc centers around the remaining ants growing as people, in this episode particularly you can see that pitou has begun to develop some form of empathy, in the previous episodes the king has begun to deeply care for komugi. Meleoron and Ikalgo care for their friends and do everything in their power to help them, there are many other examples but to keep the comments spoiler free, ill leave them out. But yea i sincerely dont understand where people are getting the "chimera ants have no humanity whatsoever" thing.

So I just realized why Gon was so hurt specifically by Pitou injuring themselves as a way to show how serious they are. Gon doesn't trust them at all, but that sort of earnest "I need to do this, and I will give this up to make it happen" is the type of sentiment that Gon has always trusted. So to see Pitou do that here and now, this type of act that Gon inherently trusts being done by someone he hates with all of his being fucking staggered him and he could barely reconcile it. That's why his reaction was "That isn't fair!" because Pitou did the exact sort of thing that Gon would have believed in, and it hurts to see. If Gon walked into this room and found Pitou as the monster he expected, Gon would have felt vindicated but this situation robbed him of that.

Yeah, Gon’s soul began to take quite a nosedive in this arc and this episode perfectly represents that change. He’s so wracked with anger towards pitou that he was actually willing to destroy it while an injured Komugi was lying there beside pitou and still needed here wounds treated in order to live. And the hurtful words he said to killua who was just trying to settle him down made him look even worse. This really shows just how heavily corrupted a person who has such strong emotions of hatred can become, by showing us a cheerful, happy lad later becoming an enraged, uncaring monster

Sadly in the end Gon did become evil during this phase of the series, threatening to kill a non involved innocent kid and also having to be reminded that you won’t get your way in order to be stopped from doing so is nothing short of sinister. I've been waiting for this episode for a while (though it's not one of the big ones that are coming a little later); it's the start of one of the best parts of the whole arc, and it's not going to pay off for a while. But that's the whole idea; this whole arc is a slow burn, and this episode exemplifies why that is. The entire reason why the entire buildup to this encounter, from Kite's death, was over 30 episodes, and ends with us having to wait even longer, is completely intentional. The whole point is to make us, the viewers, feel the frustration that Gon has to feel while he waits and waits and waits to avenge Kite. While it's also full of extremely good character building and cool weird fights, it also serves that secondary purpose, and it does so amazingly well; imagine watching this as it aired, when it took over a year for the Chimera Ant Arc to go from start to finish on TV. This episode is also really great for just the animation. It's such amazingly good animation for a kid stumbling back and forth and a monster kneeling on the floor. Gon's aura, the way he's animated when he's screaming at Pitou and Killua, everything in this episode is so well-animated because it's such an important episode. It's the start of Gon actually losing himself, giving in to his hate and darkness, the epitome of his confusion over Pitou's desire to heal another when it was seen as a sadistic puppeteer and nothing else. Everything about the entire performance of this episode, the art, the voice acting, the writing, all of it is so incredible. If it weren't for the big episodes that come later on, I'd say it's the best episode of the series; if nothing else, this is probably Megumi Han's best performance as Gon in the entire series.

And this shows us how that weird Black and White moral compass Gon had since episode 1 is actually a fucked up way to think. Nothing was purely evil or good, only view things by if they were against him and his friends of with them. When she killed Kite she was marked for him as "evil person that needs to pay" and nothing was going to change that. He only stopped since he needed her to heal Kite, no care for the hurt woman.

@@David-rt2oo It's nature. There's no inherent morality, neither good nor bad. Justice and injustice are not concepts which apply to it. Kite's incompetent, it's that simple. It was absolutely irresponsible for Kite to allow him to stay. I get why Kite gave him a choice, but Gon really wasn't ready. Killua, on the other hand was ready for the war, but being the veteran Kite should have realized Gon would never have been ready. It's a brilliant episode.

@@hunting4urbooty231 how is gon justified for being angry? He litterally went with kite and killua to wipe out a bunch of ant's who were litterally defending themselves from them. If pitou never killed kite then she would be dead. Think from her perspective. Gon is just too immature and emotional to see what the king has figured out through this arc.

I’m sorry but I have to say this but this arc really pushed my patients with gon, now I wouldn’t say I didn’t like gon but to be honest if it wasn’t for killua I would not have made it through the show. Now people have defended him to me by just saying he’s a kid and emotional which is somewhat of a valid excuse but doesn’t change my opinion on the matter.I just like to point out gon didn’t want curapica(ik I spelled it wrong) to be a murderer by fighting the phantom troupe for killing his family/clan, and didn’t want (what’s his name) to get revenge on the bomber for killing his friends&all those ppl bc”they were prepared to lose their lives”.But when kite dies “who was prepared to die”gon loses his shit and almost gets a little girl killed.but I stress this is my opinion

That's the beauty of it. Gon was always shown as a hypocrite throughout the show. ''I can do and say such things, but you can't.'' Multiple characters foreshadowed a monster or a beast within him. Wing, Razor, Genthru, Nobunaga etc. all saw that in him. Genthru, the most insane villain of them all was even scared of Gon. Meanwhile Gon always just did and accepted whatever he liked and what felt good to him. And you also have to remember that in the manga, Gon met Kite at a very young age, saved his life and inspired him to become a Hunter. The 2011 anime omitted Kite from the first episode, but they did try to add that depth through a flashback. Gon is just really lost and has set his sights on taking Pitou out, while he doesn't handle being told ''no'' very well.

Hunter Waguespack Glad to hear more opinions about the arc my guy. HxH is not for everybody, and I’m glad you still enjoyed the show enough to continue. My best friend’s least favorite arc is actually the Chimera Ant Arc (somehow he’s still my friend after that statement lol). Getting to your point, yes, Gon is contradicting himself by wanting to kill Pitou but telling others not to kill others who have been wronged just like he was. There is a difference between knowing what’s right and understanding what’s right. Gon knew killing people was bad, but he didn’t really understand what it means to lose a friend/mentor. You get what I’m saying? I’m sure you and I have been taught that killing people is bad, but if someone was to hurt a loved one, our attitudes may change. I think this is a similar case, along with Gon’s guilt and huge negative emotional suppression thrown in the mix.
