"Just because I'm not talking, doesn't mean I have nothing to say." I work with children with additional needs, and the amount of people just think I sit and play with children all day and don't "teach" anything is saddening or they will watch a TV show, and suddenly believe they know everything about autism due to this show having one child with autism in it. Trying to break the stereotype and stigma surrounding additional needs is difficult, but please keep speaking out about it!

As someone I love once stated long ago to me. Neve assume anything as it makes an a*s of you and me. Mentally challenged people are smarter than most people think. They are bright, loving, empathetic, smart beyond what we know, and precious. Love the insights your family shares. Abbie Is such a blessing and treasure. Until you have lived with, loved, or personally known a special needs person you should sit back, watch, and learn as much as you can before giving an opinion on anything.

As someone who works with special needs kids it hurts my heart when people assume they aren’t smart. They may not all be able to read, write, or speak. But I’ve had students who can draw anything, students who can drive four wheelers and dirt bikes like nobodies business, students who can make you laugh or smile, and students who can manipulate you into giving them exactly what they want lol.There is so much more to any person than being able to read or write.

I am a single mom with cerebral palsy. I get comments and questions; asking about my intelligence and parenting abilities all the time. Thanks for sticking up for us in this Vlog especially.... just because those with special needs do some things differently, does not mean that we are not capable. Or wrong. I was LOVED once, for the HUMAN that I am. My children are growing up to be capable responsible adults. My favorite autism related quote, that my friend on the spectrum had said many times, is “If you know one person with autism, you know ONE person with autism.” It means that one person isn’t the ‘key’ to knowing how autism works. It’s always super frustrating to me because autism or not, we are all complex human beings with diverse lives, constantly working through easy and hard times, and no matter what, we are all different. You are a wonderful family and I have so much love and respect for y’all. ❤️

My sister who has slight mental delay and she has asthma and ovarian cyst syndrome and when she has to to to hospital appointments or needs to go to A&E and we tell them she has slight special needs and needs time to process information they either automatically start talking to her like she is a child (shes 25) or start talking over her to me or my mum depending on who is with her. She can understand everything but just takes slightly longer to get it.

You guys will always do what is best for ab and everyone else in the family, you wouldn’t do anything to put her or anyone else in harms way. I love the point that you guys are making here! I’m totally blind, but it has no effect on my intelligence level! As far as social skills and intelligence, I’m not a genius, but I’m not unintelligent either. Another thing I would add, not only don’t assume that people with disabilities are unintelligent, but also don’t assume that just because they have one disability they have others. A lot of people who meet me for the first time talk super loud because they assume I can’t hear them. My eyes don’t work but my ears do!! Really well actually! It also makes me happy to see that a lot of people in Abby‘s life talk to her like she understands exactly what they’re saying, because that’s something that I experience a lot too. Even though fortunately blindness is the only disability that I have, people really like to assume that I can’t understand them.

My brother though was not mentally challenged, but because he had CP he was classified as having this! That was back in the early 70s. This is a kid that in 7th grade could name all the candidates running for office, which state, party and who their opponents were. I also have a special needs grandson and 1cousin who has autism. I know there is different levels. I see Abbie. She is very smart and I giggle most when she gets that devilish look in her eyes. You know she knows exactly what she is doing. I think this is one of the very powerful things about vlogs like yours, where instead of media portrayals which will simplify people with special needs into those categories you mentioned, you have real people, who are always more complex than fictional characters. Even broadening people's understanding a little bit by showing, "here's one real person who doesn't fit in those categories", can make a big difference

We have a bass boat and my son has a sensory processing disorder. We started him in private swimming lessons when he was 3 because we have a boat. His grandparents have a pontoon, we also have a pool and so do both of grandparents. So we did it for safety. Our bass boat goes super fast but when we are stationary or use the trolling motor we don't make our son wear his life jacket because his ability to swim in deep water is great plus like abby he knows when and where its appropriate to get in the water. We have had people say stuff to us and we ignore it. But he knows because our bass boat goes super fast when we go fast the life jacket goes on.

I honestly I am not sure what I’m going to do when Isaiah leaves LOL. I love listening to him talk and I love how big of advocate he can be for kids with special needs. I was born with cerebral palsy and it warms my heart when I see someone he doesn’t have a disability stand up for those that do. I believe you guys are doing what is best for your family as far as the boat because even though the fans have been watching your life for the past however many years, you guys are the ones that really know who Abbie is and what she needs. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Do you want to change the world, do you want to change your world, there’s nothing to it. All you have to do is be yourself

Maybe I’m cheesy but I loved when you gave Isaiah the hat! I literally said “aww that’s sweet” out loud. Lol. Totally agree with what you guys said about autism and the movies. Since finding your channel, I’ve learned so much from you all and have started seeking out more knowledge about autism on my own. I’m a child care worker and I recently had a sweet little guy in my class who has autism. I wanted to know as much as I could so I could give him the best care possible and understand him better. He’s moved up now to the next class and I plan to keep educating myself because you never know if there might be another child that comes into my class that has it.

I refrained from saying anything about life jackets on that video because I knew it would be coming from my own fear of water. But that is the only reason I would have said it. Not to criticize or anything. I have a fear of water and I lost a cousin to the ocean. I wish all people would wear life jackets when near or on the water. Your boat video was hard for me to watch but I watched it anyways to confront my fears. My dad wants to build a pool and he wants us to get in shape by using the pool and I said I want a life jacket or some other floaty things if that is the case because I don't even know how to swim and I am scared. P.S. Teaching Isaiah how to salute proper.... so awesome.
@sadlekisses4 жыл бұрын
While I understand your fear of water, it's super unrealistic to wear a life jacket ALL the time in or around water. It's unnatural, and for the most part people learn how to swim without one. They are there for emergency or for those that can't swim well. I grew up swimming, I grew up going on boats. Boating is one of those that you wear a lifejacket when you are little but as you get older they are just on board or near you if you need them. We use lifejackets as floaties by putting our legs in the arm holes. Having a fear of water, accompanied by not knowing how to swim goes hand in hand. I hope that one day you grow out of the fear, and you're able to learn how to swim! It is a life changer. Until then, know that swimming with a lifejacket for you is necessary. Also, very sorry to hear about your cousin. That's tragic!
@kulsoomahsan44404 жыл бұрын
@@sadlekisses Thanks. I know it is not always necessary. Cheers.

Swimming isn't that hard, once you get over your fears. Most pools have shallow ends where you can safely stand with your head and shoulders, it more above the water. Find someone, or some organization like the YMCA that can teach you, understanding your fears. Sometimes the lifeguards at public pools give private l lessons. Please check into it. I think you would enjoy pool swimming. But I agree, on the ocean wear a life vest. Hugs n love.
@kulsoomahsan44404 жыл бұрын
@@teresamariner4238 Thanks. :) I used to go to another cousin's to hang for pool time and her little sister taught me a little bit. But ever since we lost our cousin, I have avoided beaches, pools, and such things. One of my aunt's had her wedding reception at a hotel and she had some indoor and outdoor space reserved. And there was a pool that was not separated by any fencing AND the area was by a river or lake... And I was so worried that my nephew or nieces would wander off to the pool (the girls are too adventurous for me to rest easy lol). It was a trial getting through that event. But I did! :)

Kulsoom Ahsan so very sorry for your loss. I believe you would enjoy swimming in a pool if you were able to find a swimming instructor who could help you with your fears. Swimming in the ocean is so different. I was 8 when my brother taught me to swim. I have been so appreciative to know how to swim and use it for exercise when I've had the opportunities. Hugs n love!

I think often people conflate non-verbal with lack of intelligence even if unintentionally... Abby and so many others are proof that such isn't the case. Love you guys, keep bringing awareness.

my dad used to have a system with a discman and a casset tape with an audio cord attached to it: plug said audio cord in to the discman, put tape in the car tape player, and tadaa, we could play cd's in the car, and on bumpy roads you had an instant dj show...

It has gotten better. I no longer feel like the majority of people think that I’m developed mentally challenged solely from seeing me in my manual wheelchair. However, I still have a lot of people who simply don’t “get it” when I say I have forty three years of experience in this body and I know what I’m doing.

My kids were raised on boats. Like my daughter took her first steps on a pontoon boat at 10months old lol. My kids rarely wear life jackets because a) they know how to swim b) they have enough common sense to know not to fall off the boat. I think growing up in florida you must know how to swim, my kids started swim classes once they started could walk and both are master swimmers at age 5and 3.

My best friends older brother has development delays. Growing up people would think he wasn't smart and would talk to him like a toddler. We hated it but he always said " I'm not a baby!" Hes is the smartest guy. At almost 40 now, he can fix anything wrong with a car by just listening to it. Ive known him for 31 years and he's like my big brother too. Gotta love the spud!
