This was a new look for him with his long hair in 1991. It reached Number 7 here in the UK, making him become the first male solo artist to have his first eight singles reach the British top 10.

He's basically blue eyed soul. Along the likes of the righteous brothers, Adele, Hall and Oates among others. He was 10 when he first sang in a choir and after he left school he was the drummer of a soul band. He one of my favorites artists ever.

How good must the singer in that soul band have been, if it kept Rick Astley confined to the drum kit? 😆

Astley wrote this song with Rob Fisher, who in the late '80s had some success with the duo Climie Fisher, in particular the transatlantic Top 30 hit "Love Changes Everything." Fisher died after stomach surgery in 1999. In a 2018 Songfacts interview with Rick Astley, he talked about the meaning and inspiration for the song: "It's that thing that you can go through life and you can be around someone and you know that there's something wrong, you know there's something going on, but they don't want to say anything. They don't want to do it. I co-wrote that song in 1991 and I think the world has changed even since then. People do talk more about their feelings and they do open up. I'm feeling very, very conflicted about saying this, but I wrote it with Rob Fisher, who was a great songwriter and had his own band as well with a guy called Simon Climie called Climie Fisher, the band was. Rob passed away quite early, and I think he had some problems. I'm not even sure I was aware of it at the time, and I don't know whether that was connected to that, but I sensed that not everything was completely okay in his life. But, I've definitely been around people like that. My mum and dad even had a son that passed before I was born, and they never talked about it. That is the hardest possible subject to talk about, I guess, for parents to their other children, but it just never got spoken about. I'm not saying that's exactly what it's about, but it's the theme of it. It's that moment when you can cry for help and you can actually say to someone, 'I'm dying here. I'm bleeding.' We all need that moment where we sort of say, 'Right, I've just got to talk to someone,' and that's what it's about." Free was Rick Astley's third album and his first away from the pop productions of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Among the guests to appear were Elton John, who played the piano on two songs self-written by Astley. Gospel star Andrae Crouch arranged the choir on this song. Andrae Crouch revolutionized gospel music in the '70s by adopting contemporary styles. In 2004 he became only the third gospel artist ever to have his star enshrined on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This song's #7 UK chart placing made Astley the first male solo artist to have his first eight singles reach the British Top 10. It was his last major hit, but Astley knew from his time working with Stock, Aitken and Waterman that his pop star days would be numbered, and he planned accordingly, maintaining a frugal lifestyle in line with his Northern English upbringing. He enjoyed family life out of the spotlight for about 20 years before making a triumphant return in 2016 with the album 50, which went to #1 in the UK.

Such a versatile singer. He can sing from pop to soul . This song is really all soul. Very meaningful and can relate to anyone who needs help , just cry out for help. Just wished that he did the last part of that song in the same tone somewhere in the center of the song instead towards the end. Like he could have made his own by adding his own blues style. People would have realised his amazing talent for soul songs more.

When he first burst into the music scene with Never Gonna Give You Up in 1987, he was categorized as a dance/pop vocalist; but this song was released in 1991, that album did not do so well in America because they had pigeon-holed him into this dance/pop mold that he is known for...but the album that this song came from titled "FREE" showed more of his work as a maturing artist; and there were some good soulful ballads in that album including this one; but the 90's came and it was dominated with hip-hop and alternative and grunge; and if you were a dance/pop artist from the 80's, a lot of the mainstream audience expected you to do the same thing because they viewed artists as one-sided. But very few Rick Astley fans appreciated this song and accepted this new musical direction because his voice is very soulful, it made sense; but radio wasn't having it. His last album in America , titled "Body and Soul" in 1993 only released one ballad titled "Hopelessly", it made a dent on the charts but it fizzled after that, another great song in my opinion.

Its not just a race thing. He just sounds incredibly mature & old school. He was like 20 when he recorded Never gonna give you up. Thats insane to have a voice that rich & mature at that age. Theres tons of blue eyed soul singers. Especially from the 80s. But Ricks voice is shocking coming from that babyface.

Lyrics She's taken my time. Convince me she's fine. But when she leaves I'm not so sure. Its always the same. She's playing her game. And when she goes I feel to blame. Why won't she say she needs me? I know she's not as strong as she seems. Why don't I see her cry for help? Why don't I feel her cry for help? Why don't I hear her cry for help? I wandered around The streets of this town Trying to find sense of it all. The rain on my face, It covers the trace Of all the tears Id had to waste. Why must we hide emotions? Why must we never break down and cry? All that I need is to cry for help. Somebody please hear me cry for help. All I can do is cry for help. No need to feel ashamed. release the pain. cry for help. Cry for help is all I need. All I need is a cry for help. Cry for help is all I need. All I need is a cry for help. Why must we hide emotions? Why can't we ever break down and cry? All that I need is to cry for help. I will be there when you cry for help. Why don't I hear her cry for help? All that I need is to cry for help. Somebody please hear me cry for help. All I can do is cry for help. All that I need is to cry for help. I will be there when you cry for help. Is it so hard to cry for help? no need to feel ashamed. (all I need is a cry for help.) come on and release the pain. (cry for help is all I need.) put your trust in me. (all I need is a cry for help.) my love is gonna set you free.
