When my depression was very bad, I ran into a small kitten and decided to take care of her. She was the only reason that I got off from bed. I felt like I was the whole world for her, if I died how could she survive. Then I started taking care of myself for her. She saved my life, I named her Destiny. Since then I’ve loved every cats and tried to help them as much as I can.

I had twin silver tabbies, too, I named them Billy and Dusty after 2/3 of ZZ Top (sorry, Frank!) They went as a pair to a family farm in Duvall, WA, to a guy who worked for Microsoft (as I did at the time).

I think it might have been Adler, very famous historical psychiatrist, but honestly it could have been any shrink who ever lived, who said this: the best remedy for depression is to help someone else. Or, find someone in more need than you and help them. Amazing you kept them all. But considering the cost of mental health treatment, this is a 1000% win no matter how much cat food ever costs! (Hint though: you can look for a good animal health insurance plan, for so many. They are brautiful.)

I can see that potentially being taken to an unhealthy degree (ie. my only worth is what I can do for someone else) but in general? Totally agree. Helping someone else in even a small way feels good, and reinforces that you are capable of doing whatever it was rather than a useless burden to everyone which is a common lie depression uses.

archervine8064: yes, of course it doesn't mean to trivialize the weight of severe depression, or to hang everything on it, but to point to something that begins to free the trapped self with a shift of focus. What happened here with the cats, especially since the part about the kitten that somehow didn't present right and lodged in the birth canal could at worst have cost all their lives, is a beautiful example of rising to meet someone else's need and finding yourself lifted along with them. Good health and long life to all of them. They are beautiful.

@@manthasagittarius1 absolutely! It’s a gift both to help and to be helped. I hope you have been able to experience both in the right proportions.

Well, yes, so has much of what we call "mental health" teaching in a more secular understanding. I was commenting in the context that was on the table.✨🐈

How do you manage the costs with 8 cats needing to be spayed and neutered, not to mention all that food and litter. I have one cat and that's all I can handle. Do you have help?

Getting all those cats speyed and neutered can't have been cheap. Nor can their ongoing care be an easy cost to manage. My three are expensive enough without five more wee furry mouths to feed, de-flea, de-worm, etc.

Keeping 8 cats caged in a human's habitat is not love. If someone put you in a room and you could never leave that room, would you be happy? Giving a cat treats and spending time with them doesn't make up for keeping them as prisoners to sooth your self-admitted mental illness. This is horrible.
@chrisfurius4 ай бұрын
Letting them roam is better? Where they are ravaged by all sorts of dangers and disease? GTHO.
@LiamBrannelly4 ай бұрын
They're not caged, their "habitat" is simply smaller. Street cats live between 2-3 years (if they're lucky), these guys are going to enjoy a long and healthy life because of this man. So take your stupid comment elsewhere.
@blythegirl43484 ай бұрын
Wow, you seem so cynical. What do you do for others? What do you do for animals. he saved eight cats that probably wouldn't have found homes. Don't you hear how many cats are euthanized DAILY just in the US? THOUSANDS!
