It wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the leukaemia did impact this lady financially. I also think her house is probably worth a lot more than she thinks - sell up and downsize. Debt gone!
@penelopeprimrose90
@penelopeprimrose90 3 ай бұрын
It is also possible that her house is in a state of disrepair and the $200-250k range IS the inflated amount because of the area she lives in with the higher priced homes. I live in a neighborhood with $1 and 2 million dollar homes, all the way down to very run down $300k homes. That price is brought up because of the desirable neighborhood. I wouldn't even pay $300k for them, but investors come in and tear them down and build giant houses in their place.

@@sylsuthss I haven’t watched it all the way through. I’m incredibly busy with a young family and honestly I can’t say that I will ever watch it because entire show is named after, organized and designed by Dave Ramsey who did verifiably file for bankruptcy after borrowing up to his eyeballs so I have a moral misalignment with that. It’s hard to take any advice telling people to buckle down and do the sacrifice to take responsibility for their mistakes and sometimes just life situations when he himself did not do that work and had discharged his debts leaving banks and companies holding that tab. It feels unauthentic to me.

At 86 with health issues no one will hire her to help her situation now , her past doesn’t matter it’s over and done with. No way she should give up her pet and emotional support. She could go to get low income assistance for her pet .

If she had cancer that may have cost thousand in medical costs? She may not have been able to work for long periods??? At 86 she would be vulnerable with tenants and even renting. That could be unreliable as stable accommodation. Is there senior type accommodation options? Retirement home? Dog food can be cheap if you make it yourself, rice, vegetables meat scraps As a financial debt counsellor for years here in Australia we could negotiate a debt waiver for the credit cards based on her age. I think it's important not to make assumptions without more facts But I agree 👍

Australians are more human than US Americans. We (US Americans) tend to think there's a one size fits all approach to everything, except for owning guns. Clearly, medical care isn't cheap in the US. 20 years of cancer treatment in the US will bankrupt most US Americans. Plus, I believe the 86-year-old was suffering from some Dementia. I know. As I cared for several Dementia patients.

I was a 25 year old single mom with 2 children Had to get out of an abusive marriage. I made minimum wage. I found a used 10x40 mobile home that I financed for 2 years at $70 dollars a month and paid $30 a month to park in a decent but bare bones mobile home park .I bought kids clothes at a thrift store .If a button was missing on a shirt they sold it for 25 cents. It was a church run thrift shop. Bought our bread at a day old bread store, and ate lots of eggs ,peanut butter, and bought leg and thigh quarters to stretch into lots of meals. Had no credit card and drove an old clunker. We had a roof over our heads and plenty food to eat, but it wasn't fancy. I also paid a lady $20 a week to watch my kids after school for a couple hours until I got off work .We didn't have luxuries, but all our needs were met. We lived strictly on what I earned with no help. It isn't easy, but it can be done. I even managed to get the kids birthday and Christmas presents.

She may need some help navigating through this, its a humanity thing. With that said it is great to hear all the warnings about being calculating with life, expenses and the future. I know a lot a of people are chomping at the bit because they pay their debts and want to see people like her dwell in misery. She’s 86 no one is tied to her finances let her live the rest of her life peacefully. Idk why Ramsey privately told her to just take care of her 4 walls.

Not all pets are destructive, I was not able to have children. My small dogs are like children to me. I agree most renters as well as many homeowners do not take care of their property. That is why I wouldn't have rental property again if you paid me to. It is nothing but a headache but to put all pet owners in a basket is wrong.

Fairly sure this is not true. If she owns a home in her name only, creditors can collect from her estate. If the home were to go to her ex husband or other person, as joint tenant with rights of survivorship, then the joint tenant can tell the cc companies to shove off.

I find it interesting that she called into the show wanting to know what to do about her debt. It sounds like it bothers her and she wants to find a solution (even though she didn't like any of the suggestions given). I do think she has options others may not because she has a paid off home. Unfortunately, there are many senior citizens in her position for a variety of reasons. Many use credit cards to bridge the gap. When they die, they debt dies with them. I do think people should be responsible, but at her age and with cancer, she probably won't live too many more years. The past is the past and she just has to move forward. Stressing over it won't do any good at this point. For everyone else out there, I do think she should be used as a cautionary tale of what can happen if you don't plan for the future and live within your means. Old age, illness, retirement...it's coming for all of us. For those without family to lean on, the need to plan for the senior years is even more important.

if she (or someone in this situation), uses their home as collateral via HELOC - they will take her home if loan defaults. Thank God her credit cards are UN-secured debt. They cannot take her home. Bankruptcy may not be an option as she has no income for recovery (which is a condition). It would do her well to speak to an Estate Planner in HER STATE, as laws are different. AND PRAY that GOD gives her direction.

It’s not bad to just head to the meats at the store that are on the discount shelf and cook them up for your dog for a treat. Keep rest in the freezer. Strollers for dogs. Clothing for dogs. Smh.

I had a babysitter that was at least 80 years old when I was a kid. I would go to her house after school until my parents came home from work. I called her Grandma and she became a part of our family. She was a very special person in my life. Even someone 86 years old could water the neighbors plants when they go on vacation or watch a middle grade school kid after school that shouldn't be home alone. Those are things that could earn some extra money for that lady. But I think Tawra's idea of selling her home and renting sounds like the best idea to give her financial security for the rest of her life.

So she has to pay rent. She doesnt have maintenance costs and the other expenses that go along with home ownership. she will probably have capital gains taxes, but even so, the extra money can go into a high interest account and work for her while she is paying her rent. Thing is, she is going to have to make choices and some sacrifices to make these changes . That is probably the sticking point.

I made your pizza dough recipe tonight for dinner, so easy and cheaper than take out. If the lady has no money where is she driving the car to? gas and insurance are not free, most shops now deliver food. Sell the house and move somewhere cheaper, maybe assisted living housing ? a retirement home would cost the same as renting , but she would have food included and no bills. all the associated costs of owning a home, ( property taxes, water, hydro, gas etc ) add up. Luckily we have already downsized and are mortgage free before we hit 65.

Independent living can be affordable, it's the assisted living facilities that are outrageously expensive. The smallest room (tiny) for one person starts around $4000 per month and some things are an additional fee (like helping with medication). If someone has a paid off home they can sell, that will help. There are still healthcare expenses, personal expenses such as clothing, haircuts etc. People living on SS only won't be able to cover that.

I have only had pneumonia and it has kicked me hard so I can't imagine having that and the toll it takes on someone. To tell a old person to get rid of their pet which is their companion is cruel. To ask them to sell when you have no idea what kind of family she has is irresponsible. She has been living on her own this long for a reason. Maybe her family are vultures. Yeah, if you are truly in financial trouble you have to do some combination of reducing the outgo and/or increasing the inflow. Sometimes people just want to whine or hope that someone swoops in and saves them....and sometimes it feels like a bizarre "I am poorer than you...." competition. I have two favorite mind experiments--one is what would happen to prices/services if none of us had credit cards and the other is what it would be like for prices/services/employment if there was no illegal immigration in our communities.

My husband and I agree--if there is a big issue with our dog we will not spend money toward cancer treatments, organ failure, etc. We love our dog and he helps me by being my ears as I don't hear that well. I might raise the cut-off value for him if he were better at critter control but here in the country he doesn't even SEE the rabbits, etc. and he often doesn't even see DEER. So, I'm going deaf and he's going blind. Great.

I really enjoy the videos where you get thrift and garage sale stuff. The people complaining don’t understand thrifting or perhaps they are jealous. I have bought stuff at garage sales if cheap enough because I like ( example clothes ) and if they don’t work I redonate the my favorite charity. Even if I spend 5 dollars and get 2-3 pieces of quality clothes and donate 2-3 more that don’t work I think it’s a win! Same with Christmas and gardening and decorating stuff.

I've been listening to y'all and y'all are sickening. y'all act like this woman is stupid. One thing that y'all are missing is the fact that she paid off a house as single mom in 21 years. she is old, not stupid. The House is paid for people wake up. best thing that you said was she could sell her house and move into senior living. Better yet she could rent her empty bedrooms to nurses or airline stewardesses or teachers. either her daughter should orginize that or get a management company to handle that business for her. simple business. She is responsible to some extent because SHE PAID HER HOUSE OFF.

I pay all the bills, cards on the 1st of every month (some months the 2nd or 3rd or 4th due to holidays). I fill out electronic payments on the 23rd of each month to be paid the 1st - everything gets paid off on the 1st. I also pay a fixed amount each month on the electric and the water. For this reason, we are always ahead. When something comes up, we can stop those payments for 3-4 months without owing. I know, we could just put that money in an account but, if something happened to us (we travel together), those bills are paid ahead which gives the kids and Mom time to settle everything else without having utilities cut off --- you know when a loved one dies you are not thinking about bills right away...be prepared, be thoughtful. So, I just assume have the positive balance on the utility accounts than have it sitting in the bank earning $0.12/year (haha) these days. What works for you? Preparedness comes in many ways.

The problem with credit cards is people use them as their own personal banks, forgetting they are a loan, and you have to pay loans back. Which is why when I had my credit card, I charged only when I had the amount in the bank, and I had a set limit I would spend even though my credit card had a $250 limit. My amount was $75 and lower. Because I followed what I said, I never had credit card debt.

I found the video and watched it. The advice they gave was sound. Somehow, she has to find a way to improve her financial situation. Personally, at her age, lawn care, taxes, insurance, maintenance are all big expenses. I think she would be pleasantly surprised at what she could get for her home. My grandmother sold her home and got an apartment in a seniors complex with round the clock emergency help available, communal dining room and lots of activities. She had a small kitchenette for making her own food if she wanted too. A good financial plan to invest the sale from the house to supplement her SS.

You are smart to not get a pet that you know you cannot afford right now. People don't know the true cost of owning a dog until they have been through the outrageous vet bills. I know I didn't. All dogs get old and all of them will have things that come up in addition to the routine expenses like food. A single bout of bloody diarrhea turns into $300 worth of vet visit and meds. An older dog has issues like this every few months! I know firsthand. I think the animal shelters are at capacity right now due to people surrendering their pets because they can no longer afford them. It is sad.

Tawra's advice to sell & rent is sound. If this woman (or someone in this situation), uses their home as collateral via HELOC (thus SECURING the debt with your home - and risking the home) - they WILL take her home if loan defaults. Thank God her credit cards are UN-secured debt. They cannot take her home. Bankruptcy may not be an option as she has no income for recovery (which is a condition). It would do her well to speak to a well-referred & trusted Estate Planner in HER STATE, as laws are different. AND PRAY that GOD gives her direction.

Hi. First,I love listening to you all. The problem with giving advice is you don’t know enough detail. 🧐How many people become parents at 19 and are then done 18 yrs later? It’s entirely possible to have your last child 18 yrs after your first,not likely, 🤗but possible. And not impossible that you at least have more than one. On another tack maybe this is the month the dog got his yearly vaccine,$10 for rabies ,$99 for everything,it’s a good idea.I can’t recommend rehoming a pet though unless you have to. You make a commitment to an animal when you take them in. Its not a child! But it is a commitment you should honor if at all possible. However,I suspect something is up with this lady 🧐even if she can’t recognize it. Personality differences? Maybe the daughters a drug addict?🫣 Maybe moms a narcissist?🤨 Selling the house sounds like a good option to me if she can’t wake up and see what needs to be cut!

I agree with everything you said about the elderly lady. She has spent her whole life making a series of high consequential bad decisions and does not seem to own her own responsibility in it. She will probably die owing money that will never get paid. It’s people like that who cause people like us (who pay their bills) to pay higher prices on EVERYTHING ELSE! Including insurance. And all these people wanting someone else to pay her bills are socialists wether they realize it or not.

Real estate and rent in Jacksonville Florida is outrageous. Unless your house is updated you can not get top dollar for your house. Rent is $1200/month. I know my cousin had to move last year and it took months to find something she could afford. The statement about being a single Mom at 19 might have been referring having a lower income job. Reference of years in between could have been when she was building equity to purchase house, don’t know if she was low income earner. Another thought on statement about being single Mom at 19, she could be depressed and feel alone. Sometimes you need someone to sit down and show you how to budget and walk you through it. It sounds like there are a lot of information you don’t have and you are assuming a lot. Dog as example could be her only companion and it could have medical needs. My dog has had special dietary needs which aren’t cheap and he is my companion. You haven’t addressed the tax implications of selling her house too.

I just truly believe George was a bit stern to get her to back up and choose one of the many other solutions they offered. When all options are on the table - go back to work, get rid of your dog, move in with your daughter, sell your house - it helps her think of them from best to worst instead of being able to refuse them one at a time. Like, “I’ll be the bad guy if it helps you make a better decision for your life” What he said was audacious but it’s also exactly what she needed to hear. I was also interested in if the daughter would inherit the house - if she wants the house she needs to supplement her mother’s income, if she doesn’t care then the mother can sell and go rent like Tawra said. I was EXTREMELY disappointed they didn’t say this Tawra and it worries me that there is a little bit of a spirit of worshipping money if you want some elderly woman to be barely scraping by in order to retain a valuable asset over selling and living comfortably until you die

Rent would not remain stable at that price if it keeps going up as it has for the last decade. Who knows in the future? Rents could go up 30% year over year - but regardless it is another option to consider if she can sign a long term lease - but still not a guarantee. If I were in her situation, I would rehome the dog, get a lower cost pet for companionship; consider renting out a room (yes it is a good option regardless of the chance for squatters); or sell and purchase a less expensive place and live off the profit.

60 yrs ago women eere paid way less than men back then. and women didnt have the opportunities like they do now. she might have worked lots of low paying labor jobs i was a single mother with no child support too. and no child support either from my daughters father. and inliterally worked 3 jobs. and still could only afford low rent bad areas to live. i couldnt live with family either. it wasnt until inwas older and had lots of job experience working in call centers that i could earn a decent living. this woman should sell her house pay her cc debt. and go live in a senior apt. some r really nice too. but to tell someone that age to get a job? well. it would be super hard for her to do that not many places will hire someone that old. personally i think that comment was cold and insensitive. and how she lived or what she did with her money yrs ago well maybe she didnt or couldnt save alot again she needs to sell her house pay off her bills and move to a senior apt. and def not give her daughter any of the money she makes from the sale of the home. save it for the few urs she has left on this earth. just my opinion
