My daughter was visiting her in-laws in Ashville, NC this weekend. There were 7 extra people in the home. They could not leave because there was no electricity, no gas, roads were shut. But, they were fine because her in-laws were ready! They had a whole house generator, loads of stored up food and water and even some Moon Shine! They all were safe and had plenty to eat because they were prepared. It took a lot of stress of off this mom knowing that her daughter and husband and two little ones were safe and had plenty hundreds of miles away. They were able to get out today and go home!

This is why we call our preps emergency preps. It doesn't have to be the end of the world as we know it. It doesn't have to be a natural disaster. It can be losing your job or being to sick to go out and get what you need. When I broke my ankle in several places, I wasn't allowed on my foot for a couple of weeks. I was so happy to have canned meats because they made making meals much easier.

I'm in NC and have lived 20 years in the High Country of NC. The devastation is indescribable. For the mountains of NC, SC,TN, this is what Katrina was to Louisiana. I am blessed to have not lost my home. 75 ft trees came down and 10 ft more to the left and I wouldn't be here now. Lost all my cold food in fridge. Freezer food stayed good and frozen even though we had no power for days. BUT, I have my stockpile of food and water and ways to do what's needed.. My daughter and her family had NO stockpile and lost her cold and freezer foods. Had some random pantry foods and lived off snacks and peanut butter and jelly till they got power back yesterday. I'm praying she and her husband will now be better prepared because there WILL be more future catastrophic events. Have a stockpile, people . Have a stockpile.

Native Floridian here. A good thing to have on hand are extra (large) trashcans. Save them just for hurricanes so they remain clean. When the hurricane forms fill these trashcans (put them wherever you'll need the water) with water. This is what I used to flush my toilets as well as water to wash myself with (after hurricanes it's hot and steamy with no fans or air conditioners). Bathtubs can gradually leak, but the trash cans will keep plenty of water for you. And even though it isn't ideal, if you have pets and run low on drinking water for them, this can help in an emergency. I kept 6 of these trashcans ready.
@cocokai9661Ай бұрын

Saying not to have any emergency supplies or food on hand because it 'could' get wiped away is like saying why bother to save money because someone could steal your money. My friend just went through hurricane Helene and no aid is being sent to the smaller communities, they are left on their own and almost no media coverage.

Tara, you are right to share tips on prepping and learning skills. I grew up in a family with parents who grew up in the depression. My mom always prepared, saved, gardened, sewed, and we learned by example. I once worked for a company that went out of business and out of work. I lived well with my basement stockpile, bills paid ahead, and never even had to touch savings until I was able to obtain employment in about 6 weeks. A blizzard once had me heating with a kerosene heater with house vented appropriately. I had to cook for myself and neighbors using flat top kerosene. Diabetes cannot be 'cured' once you actually have it. It CAN, however, go into remission if you make the lifestyle changes early enough. It can also be managed if you can't get it to go into remission--eat properly, take the meds you need to take (there's no shame in having to take insulin or other diabetes meds, they keep you alive!), keep your A1c as low as possible (under 6 ideally, but at least under 7). You did the right thing by make changes before you went into full diabetes. You will have to be vigilant for the rest of your life as it can still sneak up on you, but you know what to do now, so the odds are much lower for you!

I'm with you, Tawra. I saw the Shame on You comments and bit my tongue and didn't comment. Yes, if you lost your home in the floods, you lost most of your preps....and I am praying for those affected. No excuses, though....if you are prepped and you do lose it all, it's a heartbreak....but to not be prepped and then lose your ability to get out,, even if you are safe makes being safe really hard. Our worst fears are a tornado or grass fire to take everything. Our most common issue is being smowed in. We are prepped for 6 months to a year and rotate and restock. We have a safety deposit box at the bank where all our important papers and flash drives are kept, with copies in our bugout bags. We have our own bulk fuel tanks, but we rarely let our vehicles get below half before we top them off, ESPECIALLY in the winter. Every vehicle has at least 6 bottles of water, a fire extinguisher, a bag of snacks and a box of Kleenex. Bugout bags are at the door and refreshed for summer and winter. We know every rabbit trail around but we also have topographical, a county and provincial road map in all vehicles in case of a rapid Evac, AND predesignated meet up points in case we are in two different trucks. It's not fear mongering! Seriously, it doesn't matter where you live, until you've had to go through it, you can't criticize. I would rather be over prepared and lose my preps, than not have them and be stuck!

I'm 71 and left the workforce 9 years ago. Most of my adult life I had at least a 4 to 6 week stock pile. Many times my stockpile saved my "bacon".🎉 I remember the time I had major car repair and my job was 30 miles away. I had to fix the car. At the time I lived paycheck to paycheck. I was trying to pay off debt and save money. That payday after fixing the car and paying bills, I had $20. I only got paid every other week. That payday I was out of everything it seemed: deodorant, laundry soap, etc. The $20 got me most of that stuff at dollar tree. I was criticized for not buying the year supply of Tide at Target for $17. Yes the Dollar Tree Tide didn't last long but it got me over the hump. And my stockpile kept me eating. It took a couple of months to get straightened out. Thank goodness I had food. You are smart for preaching this. I learn from you all the time even at my age and practicing all of this for years. Keep going. I don't have case sales either but when I find it on sale I buy extra - at least 2 to 6 items. It adds up after a while. Yay for stockpiles. Go stockpiles.

I grew up in the Carolina foothills. People who have not lived in this area cannot fully comprehend how much different this is from "typical" hurricane weather. Asheville is nearly 300 miles from the coast and more than 500 miles from where Helene came aground. There were no "evacuation orders" for Upstate SC, western NC, eastern TN, etc. because they were not coastal areas that should have been impacted by storm surge or tornado strength winds. People in this region were told to batten down the hatches, prep for 4-8 inches of rain, and prep for wind gusts of up to 70 mph. In fact, Upstate SC (where my mom still lives) saw 10+ inches of rain and sustained 70 mph. Parts of western NC, which were already at flood stage due to heavy rain the week before, got 24-30 inches in a 24-hour period. The warnings that went out went out when it was too late for most to do anything. Most of these areas aren't areas serviced by wide, flat roads. They're steep, narrow, mountain roads with 25 mph speed limits in GOOD weather. One missed turn, and you're plummeting down the side of a mountain. Now, add 70 mph winds into the mix, and you're probably in more danger trying to get on the roads and evacuate than staying home and hoping for the best. That said, absolutely have a stockpile. My mom's preparedness is the reason that she has been able to stay home, stay safe, and stay relatively comfortable while her rural electric service provider literally rebuilds their system. Neighbors helping neighbors is the ONLY thing keeping folks alive in western NC, because FEMA sure hasn't shown up in any of the countless little towns that have been virtually wiped off the map! It's also worth noting that the consequences of this storm are going to be felt throughout the region for months to come. The local grocery chain (Ingles) that services this region was headquartered in Black Mountain, N.C. As of Saturday, its main distribution center was underwater and another warehouse flooded. That's going to create HUGE logistics issues for stores throughout northern GA, Upstate SC, western NC, and easter TN. The I-40 shutdown is going to further complicate supply chain issues. Yes, thankfully, power is being restored in many areas, and water levels are receding, but it's going to be a long, long time before things go back to "normal."

You do not need potable, or drinkable, water to flush a toilet. If it is still raining, put every bucket, pot, and pan (well not the cast iron) out to collect water. - And how do you flush a toilet with a bucket of water? You simply dump or pour water into the toilet bowl. You'll need 2 to 5 gallons per "flush" but most often about 2.5 to 3 will do it. The easier the toilet bowl is to flush, the less water you will need. Consider lining a waste basket, cardboard box will do, with a plastic bag and placing all urine based toilet paper in it rather than flushing it. Consider flushing less often. Pretend you're camping; this is easier for males.

I live in south GA. I am VERY thankful that I had prepared way in advance. Our area has been without power for a week. There was no water, ice, gas anywhere for many days. The grocery stores were empty. Trees were blocking roads everywhere. We had all we needed at home. We were blessed because we prepped! Stop apologizing, Tara.

A trash bag can be placed in the toilet under the ring to save on flushings. Then dump daily. If you have to evacuate a bucket, trash bag, and a pool noodle can make a temporary toilet. Slice a slit in the pool noodle to fit over the top of the bucket for "comfort".

Agree! Good advice! At least the people who stocked up could help their neighbors when the roads were gone. In December 1968, I lived through a 7 foot snow in Flagstaff, AZ. We were cut off for at least 2 weeks. Grocery stores had bare shelves. Roofs without a steep enough pitch collapsed all over town. Unless you've lived through something like that, people just don't want to think about it!

@valerier4308 Saw one for 50 while identical ones are more. Better get it before the strike though don't get paid til a few days. Supposed to be a lot of precipitation this winter here. Amazon before winter will probably be the cheapest and a few warehouses within a couple of hours away. Already here in stock most likely and few probably think of that now. Avoiding 3rd party sellers. Gets lost, takes a long time, damage, etc. and easier to get a replacement if through them. Then no more worrying if we get a lot of snow. My concern is fuel on tankers and the strike now.

So you told people to stock up. Let’s say some did and their entire stash, home, vehicles, storage facilities, etc were completely washed away. I agree we have to stock up but how about a focus on places to store items that are safe from hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, tornados and earthquakes. Edit: Some of these comments are gross and your judgmental I told you so tone is not constructive. If someone is watching your channel they understand the concept of prepping. Where is the grace for those who lost everything smh
@joycebegnaud9645Ай бұрын
Amen I completely agree with your comment. Some or those who were prepared, lost it all. I hope preppers don’t see themselves in the situation these people went through. Yes I understand if you don’t go through it, you can help others who did. But not one of us know if we do stockpile food and other items, if this exact thing will happen to us. We just don’t know if and will it will happen.

10% of homes get destroyed from natural disasters - that means there is a 90% your home won't - I don't think 10% is a big enough excuse not to do it. That is like saying why should I have insurance on my car because what good is the insurance going to do me if I get killed in a car wreck.

Yes, I never really thought about that. Having a tub full of water not only gives you that extra water, but it makes it very easy to fill up the toilet since it is right next to it. Definitely a good idea, especially if you know a big storm is coming and it could do some serious damage. It amazes me all those people that live in huge weather problem states aren't prepared. I'm in AZ and have around 2 months of food and we are one of the few states that mother nature doesn't mess with that much except for monsoon season, but even then it's not a catastrophe like what other states go through when they get hit. Yes, there are fires and the grid can go down, which will affect us. But I'm more prepared than those that are guaranteed hurricanes & tornadoes. I just don't understand why people want to worry about it after it happens instead of being prepared before the event comes.

I guess it depends on where you live. Personally, I don't stockpile because I experienced Katrina. If a hurricane is coming, I'll evacuate. I do say, tho, it is kinda insensitive when people are suffering because they can't change what they did or did not do. Rather, I will donate to victims. And everyone should do the same if they can.

I'm praying for all involved in Hurricane Helene, and those helping them. This port strike is terrible (shame on them!) & I pray people have supplies at home. We have only a few grocery store warehouses in our area & they only hold so much. ... Regarding prepping: I don't understand people that do not keep extra food on hand. We didn't call it prepping when we grew up, but we saw our parents putting up food. We had very few stores in our area. Mama canned and also put food in the freezer. Daddy had 1 of our cows slaughtered each year. Other than that, we learned by example to shop the grocery ads & to always, always have extra food on hand. We were also taught by example to keep extra for those who have less.
