Well actually the morning star refers specifically to the type of head; you can have a morning star mace, or a morning star flail. Either way it doesn't particularly matter because flails are almost entirely fictional; real flails that were actually used were threshing flails which typically only had one link of chain. Honestly a ball and chain is a far more accurate description of what that is than a flail.

The definitions of weapon types are often blurred, but according to my understanding, maces are basically just clubs with heavy wooden, stone, or metal heads attached to the handle. Morningstars are like maces but with spikes attached to a usually round head. And a flail is a ball (or other weighted object that can either be spiked or not spiked) attached to a chain and the other end of the chain attached to a wooden handle. Percussive weapons that deliver a lot of blunt force, such as war hammers and the weapons mentioned above, were very useful for defeating mail armor, plate armor and other types of metal armor which were specifically designed to defend against cuts and thrusts from edged weapons like swords and spears. Flails were most likely not used very often in medieval battlefields because they don't make very good weapons. By design, not only is it much harder to control than other conventional weapons, but it has the potential of hurting both the user and others around him.

In combat flails were primarily used to bypass shields and people blocking with weapons actually. It's pretty hard to block one because they swing around them instead of into them. When you see someone fighting against someone with a flail, they will often push their shield out as far as possible to avoid the flail hitting them. They were not a standard military weapon though, and were used more for farming than fighting. Range was important on the battlefield and sadly real flails back then had to be two-handed to have enough range to be affective against someone with a longsword. That gives you a disadvantage, you either sacrifice range by using a short flail or sacrifice a shield for a two-handed flail. The morning star is actually the term used for the ball with spikes. You can have a morning star on a solid shaft or have it on a flail chain. So technically Aki was half right, she just named a part instead of the weapon. In fact, morningstar flails were not really a thing in the middle ages, that's more of a thing we invented in the modern age. Morningstar flails are good for duelling and we do that more nowadays because nobody has serious middle aged battles anymore. You're not fighting for your life, so you can just have fun using unconventional weapons.

@Jason Hu Fun fact, the morningstar is a case specific version of the more typical mace. A solid headed mace is for use more against plate armor, a morningstar is more for use against chainmail and ringmail armor. Usually used by religious warriors, like clerics, who weren't allowed bladed weapons as part of their faith. Hilariously the one weapon that works best against all traditional armor is the halberd. That being being it's part battleaxe, spear, and warpick. So it can peel and puncture and heavy plate armor and punch through ring/chainmail with shocking ease.

Actually, a morning star is more typically a spiked mace not a spiked ball on a chain. That sort of weapon is called a flail. Guts doesn't use a broadsword. A broadsword is a one handed renaissance blade usually with a basket or cup hilt with a blade wider than a small sword or rapier. Guts wields an oversized long sword, sometimes called a great sword, or zweihander.

@@MurasakiCrow It's where the name derives from, yes, and I can't say with 100% certainty that its never been used historically to refer to a flail type weapon, but one thing to understand is that there is no archeological evidence of a spiked ball on a chain being used historically, and those flails with spikes on them usually are shaped more cylindrically, and thus the term Morningstar wouldn't really fit, even if historians agreed it could be used that way. Thus its officially excluded from the nomenclature in order to assure accuracy in typology communication. In short, it could in theory be used to refer to a flail, but it's not really accurate linguistically to do so.

There is no upper limit, or alternate term for a sword bigger than that except for swords not suitable for combat such as a bearing sword/parade sword. Besides which, he started off using a regular arming sword when he was way too small for it. Thus, he modeled his sword when he was older off of that same general design. It is quite literally an oversized version of a smaller sword.

It is technically considered a naginata, though it looks more like a guandao to me. More then that it is considered one of the 12 supreme grade sword, named Murakumogiri, meaning that it is in fact a sword.

You should do a lot more of these styles of challenges! If you don't want to take time to custom make them there's lots of videos that you can use for these! Also, next you could maybe do OST songs! They are very interesting to do challenges to figure out because you hear them a lot in the anime but they aren't as memorable always. And to make these more interesting you could use videos for these challenges so that both of you can pool your knowledge and work together to figure out the answer. (I recommend the KZbin channel Sarcasm317, he does really high quality quizzes) Using videos and working together for them could let you make these videos much more easily and much faster, so more videos for you to upload and more content for us to watch! It's a win/win for everyone involved!
