By chance or (fate) I met Mr. Vu in the streets of Phnom Penh and was surprised that a Chinese man could speak Vietnamese so well. Then he told me his story and I was even more surprised. Mr. Vu's parents came from China and settled in Cambodia. They did make their way into Vietnam for a while but decided to move on towards Phnom Penh, where he was born. Many years later he had to flee by foot escaping the Khmer Rouge. He walked all the way to Saigon and then My Tho where he lived for 10 years selling ice cream. Mr. Vu is a great man with great story to share with us. I feel like I went to hell, came back to earth alive and keep laughing at myself. I left by boat from Sihanoukville in summer of 1979 after surviving the Khmer Rouge dead camps, ended up in Philippines, came to US in 1981. Most of my family members of twelve did not survive. Only two of us made it alive. Met my wife here in the US. Her family was torn apart back in 1970. Her ants, uncles, and cousins were deported to Vietnam even they were born in Cambodia. We travel to Cambodia and Vietnam every year to do some volunteer works after our retirement now. You look a lot like Cambodian. Thanks for sharing this, Kyle!

Great portraiture of Mr. Vu. He must be proud to have his story told. What a strong guy. I remember those times so vividly. After leaving the South Vietnamese to their fate, and indiscriminately bombing the hell out of Cambodia, America was well aware of the horrible genocide occurring, and lifted not a finger to deter it.

I laughed at Kyle saying "I guess I dont look Vietnamese" because ive seen Vietnamese people come in about 100 different variations and colors 😂. Reminds me of people in the Blakans / Caucasus region saying they are white but they look like they could be from Riyadh. Humanity has no blueprint when it comes to how you look based on where you come from.

Many Chinese people settled in Cambodia dating way back. In the states you can meet quite a few Chinese-Cambodians. My uncle by marriage is Chinese and all of his family speak Khmer. Many Chinese-Cambodians I have met besides my relatives have the last name "Lim"

Love Mr Vu ... Simplicity in happiness. Sometimes we are making our short life too complicated and make us unhappy even we have money. Vietnam and Cambodia have a bitter history together. There are a lot of Cambodians in Vietnam. History cannot be erased but I hope we can live in peace and harmony together.

Mr. VU is correct, the first time I saw your youtube channel I thought you were Combodia. I can understand and related to him. My family's walk from Vietnam to Combodia during the same time and we're capture by Khmer Rouge. Finally to US in 1986.

Mr Vu is right. When Pol Pot came into power, he ordered all urban civilians to leave their homes in town and get marching on foot to the country side. Main purpose of the march is to do farming so that everybody produce food. Pol Pot have he backing of China. However even though the Pol Pot regime was repressive to its local opponents, what seem to be strong came crumbling like a house of card. Pol Pot was attacked by the vietnamese, without the help of China, was defeated easily without much fighting. As for Mr Vu, I have great respect for him. A simple man at the wrong place at the wrong time, manage to get by with his honest trade. A man much alike Asians, who eats what he sow, find happiness with the little he have, and still came out in good health.
