First thing I noticed is that in the autotuned bit, the natural vocal part is actually layered on top of the autotuned version, which is responsible for that robotic sounding effect way more than the autotune itself. There's a lot of flangering happening between those layers and it's quite nice to still be able to hear his natural voice underneath for that added emotion. I was genuinely worried in the beginning of the video that you weren't mentioning it but you reassured me in the next part.. ;)

You can immediately hear the computerized voice when autotune kicks in. It's as clear as water. When hearing it in the final mix with all the instrumentals and stuff it's not as noticeable, but with the isolated vocal track it really stands out.

I am really glad that you are spending quite a bit of time on the subject of auto-tune. I'm a professional musician (45 years off and on) who has been playing 6 string fretless bass for 25 years. I personally believe that auto-tune can be useful, if used very sparingly to fix minor problems (just like "punching in" to fix smaller mistakes in the studio). I also think that it can be somewhat useful as an effect - as long as it is obvious to everyone , much like different kinds of reverb. Other than that, I really believe that it's overused to the extent of further 'ruining' popular and rock music. I'm currently having a serious debate with my 20 year old son about the use of auto-tune. We've been batting it back and forth for a couple of months, and your videos have added to our discussions. Spot on! But remember don’t conflate subtle and skillful pitch correction with Auto Tune. I use pitch correction on a lot of sources not just vocals and I use it often but sparingly. It’s confusing the matter that people think these things are interchangeable, they’re not. Personally, I don’t even have Antares Auto Tune on my system. Haven’t for at least 15 years. Switched to Melodyne almost as soon as it came out. Far superior and if used skillfully it is undetectable. Btw, using it on bass guitar can really put it it in the pocket. As a bass player you’d appreciate the results. I do it after comping.

I grew up mostly with the music from the 60's-70's. So was used to hearing artists natural voices without all the technology used today.

Fil, that was an excellent explanation about the different uses of Auto-Tune. I would bet about 98% of your audience always hears how much respect that you have for any singer that you choose to single out on your show. You can see it in your smile that you're a huge fan of the whole process. I loved watching you go into your producer mode. What you said is true. If you auto-tune too much then you lose all of the natural human emotion. We need to hear a singer's voice crack sometimes. And, when the singer naturally gets a little sharp or a little flat that doesn't take away from a good song. The human voice is a musical instrument and it can never be perfect like a machine. I would love to hear George Michael singing Praying for Time stripped-down just to his vocals. I think of him as a perfectionist and so, it makes me wonder if he used Auto-Tune. How do you know that the whole thing isn’t pitch corrected upward a half step in the studio? They can adjust formants with the new software as well. I buy the artistic angle in the chorus because it’s so blatant, but there where a few other places that seemed tweaked. The difficulties of doubling your vocals is a whole other issue, especially with vibrato. What about how vocals are eq’d to sound better, both live and in the studio? There is a lot of manipulation of sound that goes into modern music. I’m starting to lean toward thinking that developing good timbre and the kind of accuracy to be able to sing something “essentially” the same way twice is really the best a human voice can be. Like you, I think being authentic and real about what we are hearing is good medicine and can bring true appreciation. There are plenty of artists with “modest” voices who nevertheless leave a musical legacy. Every voice is unique, and I think most people properly trained can sing beautifully.

Exactly. I also heard a couple in the very beginning that had correction, a couple words where the note was held for a measure. Also, there have been ways to correct pitch since the 70’s. One of the Eventide units, can’t remember which, was commonly used for longer notes. You’d have to do it basically by ear during the mix down or you could do it ahead and bounce it to another open channel. Also, you can change pitch with a chorus; %100 wet, %0 feedback and tweak the detune until it sounds right. Neither of these methods are are anywhere near what can be done today but they were commonly used.

This series on auto-tune has been very educational and enlightening for me. Now I better understand more of the subtle uses of auto-tune. I have to admit that I thought it was used just because the singer couldn't sing on key. Now I know it is more complicated than simply taking a singer who actually cannot sing on key and using auto-tune to correct everything and ....voila....instant singing sensation...!! As I have mentioned before, I was raised listening to and singing along with the great musicals of Oklahoma, South Pacific, Carousel, West Side Story, and many other great musicals. Now, I would love to see...and hear.... how accurate all of those wonderful singers were if put through this device. I would like to think that they were exceptional singers since auto-tune was not available back then and there was no way to "tweak" the voice ( at least as far as I know, which is very little...lol..!! ).

There are some great videos from the early 2000s when M5 first became known recorded for AOL Sessions with no auto tuning including an acoustic set. I'd be interested to hear you talk about T-Pain, an artist known for his artistic, purposeful use of autotune. I've heard him sing without and to my untrained ear, I feel like he's very good, but, as I said, I'd be interested to hear what someone with training has to say. YES! "That mechanical sound"...I've always wondered about it when I've heard it. Sometimes it is so slight one might miss it. Again, I'm learning that there is so much more to music and singing than I ever realized. I'm beginning to realize how important music producers or engineers or whatever you call the people that put together a song, can be. And I was so "proud" when I actually heard the change in this song by Adam L. Love his voice. Also, I did notice right off the deepening of his voice when you played the live portion. Had I been in the audience I think I would have thought, "Hang on, he's singing this in a lower tone." When I go to concerts I want my fav songs to sound like I know them. I've experienced concerts where the artist sang in lower tones, don't like it but now I understand why they might do it. I've always wanted to sing but can't carry a tune in a bucket, sadly.

You said that you don't like singers singing in a lower key, well that's every singer, but I hope that you aren't one of those people who post messages calling singers who do this as embarrassing or 'sounds like a cat being strangled'. Another poster said on one of Fil's video that he's a guitarist and also often turns down his songs to a lower key live for his own benefit, so he doesn't know why it is that the singer always gets nasty messages about singing in lower keys? These trolls don't want to learn about music, playing live music or professional singing. I'd rather a musician or singer turn down a song by a few keys when they are playing a 2 hour set and on a long tour so that they can preserve their voice rather than fake it with mechanical autotune. If they don't like something then KZbin is full of endless videos to find what they do like. I don't like Justin Bieber or Nikki Minaj, but I think everyone deserves to enjoy the music that they love. If I started shitposting underneath Nikki Minaj and Justin Bieber videos I'd expect to be given short sharp shift from their fans.

Fil, I've always heard the autotune, and when it was being used as a clear gimmick effect, I understood why, even though I didn't like it. I couldn't understand anyone not hearing it, or for that matter liking any song with it. Reading through the comments that so many can't recognize it has actually given me more patience for it. I now believe some people can't hear it. They have no reason to lie and their comments are so genuine. Thank you for your efforts in this. I’ve always heard it, too, and it has caused some heated debates with people (I know and care about), who think it’s a natural vocal sound. I will try to apply patience with those people, as it might be either “programmed” into a certain generation, or even a hearing defect, similar to someone being colorblind. I don't need a graph...I believe I can hear it nearly every time in a record. I hate it. Auto-tune is the spawn of the devil and the bane of pop music. I know A. Levine and Usher are both great vocalists / singers who don't need it (as well as Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill); but in order to sell music these days, and/or to stay relevant, great singers sort of sacrifice their "dignity" or "integrity" and use auto-tune to sell what the public seems to want. I remain a little perplexed why such a large segment of the public enjoys the prevalent and heavy use of auto tune in popular music. Sounds like vocals by Artificial Intelligence. That'll be next, a complete A.I. band with auto-tune vocals. I theorize the auto-tune frequency probably tickles or stimulates areas of the cerebral cortex that produce serotonin.

I agree, Cordell. I liken it to Michael Jackson: I see his videos from later Jackson 5 and early solo career. He looked terrific and his face was strikingly handsome. Then, he started over analyzing facial characteristics and traits under a "microscope" so to speak. So he fixes what wasn't broken--again and again and again until he looked freakish. I always thought Jewel was adorable and sexy with that snaggle tooth of hers. When she "fixed" it, I really missed it. Great art(music in this instance) is very often the culmination of passionate but flawed elements. In the big picture, my opinion is that auto tune has stripped most records of the magic that lies within imperfection.

I really hate that mediocre singers end up selling records etc with auto-tune! I hate hearing an auto-tuned version of some pop singer and knowing that it's shit - that most of my amateur singing friends could sing a LOT better than that idiot who's making money from very little talent! The Kylie Minogues of this world with very little singing talent, and who only got into the industry because they know someone! Nice placing that "doors always open" phrase into your mixed voice, Fil. Somewhere in the nasal cavity but not falsetto. It's got some force to it. I never could pull that off until my 50s when I did it by mistake. Then I realized I could do it; I just had to go back and figure out what I did and work to be able to do it consistently. Always had chest voice and Beach Boys falsetto; never thought I'd be able to do the "mix head" thing. Really has made a huge difference. You're multi talented and I know have worked your craft. It shows.

Hi Fil. People speak about identity politics and identity sport. The idea that people identify so strongly with a certain political party or politician or a sports team, that the entity becomes a part of themselves. As such, criticism of the party or sports team means a criticism of themselves and it becomes very personal. People become very defensive of any perceived criticism. I have been watching your recent shows and really enjoying the analyses because that’s what they are, analyses. It’s not a criticism of the singer, just telling us how auto tune is used in music production - how it can enhance certain voices not in a way that’s artistic, but rather to hide imperfections. Btw, this helps me a lot as I’m not able to really hear auto tune. Someone I’d really like you to check Fil, is Bruno Mars. He’s one of the artists who when I hear him, sounds exactly the same (or as close to) whether he’s live or in the studio. Great musician.

I definitely have a lot more respect for The Voice than any other reality TV show. I have actually learned so much about singing from the show! It was my first introduction to the idea of head voice vs chest voice. Please do take a look at Kelly Clarkson if you haven't yet! I absolutely love her work and her voice.

Just found your channel, these are really educational. I’m getting to where I can hear auto tune sometimes (I hate it, I didn’t even like Cher’s use), thank you for all of the visuals and explanations of the behind the scenes. The creative process is fascinating to me. I’m in the US and used to love The Voice but I don’t think it’s made anyone’s career here except to enhance the judges. They seem to be the only ones benefitting from the show. So I stopped watching it some years ago.

Equal temperament isn't just for computers. It makes the piano a useful instrument for playing in any key. If you tune an instrument to the true frequencies for harmonies, it is for a single key. If you play something from another key, some of the note combinations that are perfect harmonies in the original key are very clashing in other keys. Equal temperament is the shifting of the notes to make those harmonic combinations work equally well in any key. Not perfect in any key but much better overall and helped make the piano useful. With a voice or very adjustable instrument like a violin, it is possible for the artist to shift off of the equal temperament to correct the harmony for they specific key that is being played. Fretted instruments cannot do that. Brass instruments are naturally locked to their original key because of the method of overtones creating the notes. A very good brass player can "lip" the pitch slightly up or down to adjust the notes for other keys.

This kind of gimmick is part of why I hang on tight to old-school musicians who eschew autotune and embrace the little quirks and slides of raw, unedited vocals. Jack White, I'm looking at you.

Really interesting analysis Fil. I like Adam's voice but he got so much criticism when he did the Superbowl about his voice. Maybe it wasn't his fault possibly the production? My favourite of theirs is Harder To Breathe, I love the lyrics.

As soon as the chorus hits you can hear that robotic auto tune sound. It's obvious in this case it was used as a digital effect on the voice and not because he needs to be tuned. Your analysis is spot on.

Fil thank you for all of this work you do. It is so interesting. There is an artist I would like to hear your analysis of. His name is David Archuleta and I am particularly interested because he has had vocal cord issues since he was very young. Starting at a young teenager with vocal paralysis, to recent vocal surgery. How do vocalists preserve their vocal health with constant wear and tear. And what may have happened to Julie Andrews that resulted in her not being able to sing any more. Thanks Fil

I ran it back once after the first verse and by ear could tell the auto tune started at the chorus, but not by the pitch monitor. These videos definitely help me to recognize what auto tune looks like. I agree that it was a style choice, perhaps to make the verses sound more human than human (deliberate Rob Zombie reference) when contrasted with the chorus. His voice sounded tinnier with auto tune and much richer without it.
