Mel, if the leaves of the specific tree have not changed color yet, have the kids predict what color they will change to. Also have them research what determines the color the leaves will turn, as well as the process.

Make your own wood stain from the hulls of the black walnuts. They need to be black not green, and wear gloves. Break them up, put them in a jar and cover with water and then wait a few weeks. You can make it as light or dark as you want by adjusting the hulls to water ratio

I may well be wrong, but I think it's sap from sugar maples used for syrup. But you also need to keep bugs out of the sap collected too.

The further south ya get in the country, the tougher it is to make a good quality syrup. Up here in Western NY, it takes anywhere from 40- 55 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup.

I've known some.people tap the birch tree and make syrup from that but not same flavour as maple . The sugar maples are the most beautiful colour in fall ...lots of reds 🍁

It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Maple syrup can only be made in North Eastern North America. This includes as far south as Pennsylvania and as far west as Ontario. The top North East section of North America is known as the maple belt and it’s where all of the world’s maple syrup is produced. Luckily here in New York, we are in this maple belt. If you don’t live in this area, you probably still have maple trees but not the type that can be tapped. Unfortunately, you’ll have to buy your maple syrup at a store.

Any maple tree will make maple syrup but hard maples are the best. A good idea is to take a ribbon or spray paint and mark the bigger maple trees now rather than trying to figure out if this tree a maple or not in the spring when their leaves are off. God Bless from your Canadian Friend.

The homestead is looking great as time passes and y'all keep improvements on the property in the woods by clearing paths and keeping them maintained the wildlife will use them too. This will help you Gary with hunting and keeping a eye on what's happening on your property. Learn what animals are by the tracks they make too. Next spring look for Red Maple trees. The wood is great for grilling hamburgers and chicken. Just cutting the small limbs like 1 or 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches long. When you get your charcoal ready to cook add 3 or 4 pieces of water soaked wood into the coals and let it smoke into the meat. Taste great.

In Kentucky we have a few different types of maple. The most popular are water maple and sugar maple. Sugar maples are the ones you tap. You will recognize those in the fall by their brilliant colors of yellow orange and red. They are almost your typical tree shape, whereas other maples can to spread out parallel to the ground.

on average, here in Western NY, anywhere from 40-55 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. lot depends on early/mid/late season and the current freeze thaw cycles which both affect the quality of the sap. the farther south in the country one goes, the tougher it is to make a quality syrup.

You need sugar maples to get good syrup. If you have sumac not sure which one is not poison you cut branch and push out pith (middle part) and you have a tube you can use to hang bucket on and let sap drip into bucket. It is always spring that you gather it w hen the (March in Wisconsin) sap starts r unning and you can gather it.

Speaking of ants, when I lived on Maui for 6 months, a friend Of mine was bitten by 27 fire ants. She went into anaphylactic shock. Her eyes rolled back in her head, lips turned purple, and she stopped breathing, all in a matter of about 10 minutes. Praise God I know how to do CPR, so she came back. I hope someone on the 41.36 knows how to do CPR or will learn to do it. It's not that hard to learn CPR, and you never know when you may need it. I'm so glad it didn't happen to Gary.

I get bit every time I step outside!! I can’t even see the little buggers that’s doing it. They’re tiny flying insects that can sting through jeans. I wish there was a pill/shot we can get that’ll repel insects looking for a free meal! I found that some perfumes attract bees like crazy! Does anyone have any recommendations for what helps repel flying insects, flies, fleas, ticks, etc. in the yard? I do take an allergy pill every morning that helps with allergies and itchy eyes. I see you both itchy eyes lol. But everyone is different. Allergy pills have no effect on my daughter. Her doctor gives her an allergy injection once-twice a year and that does help her.
