I became a huge Duran fan in the second half of the 2023 season. His speed and hustle made the team so much more fun to watch, and you can tell that spirit is rubbing off on the rest of the team. Probably getting his jersey at some point!

Thanks for giving Duran this exposure. He's very underrated so far. I didn't know he came up as a 2nd baseman, which explains why he struggled playing OF initially. Speaks to his work ethic that he's such a good defensive outfielder now. (Doesn't his path reminder you of Mookie Bettts, who also came up as a 2nd baseman but had to switch to OF because the BoSox had this other dude named Dustin Pedroia in front of him).

As an old Aussie Red Sox fan with a looong background in AFL (search for highlight vids), I don' understand the full significance of most of the stats that are constantly blared out there about players & their performance. However, I think I know an EFFECTIVE player when I see one. This background vid confirms that for me. Duran has talent strengths and weaknesses, like all of us. HE has obviously worked hard enough to maintain his strengths and strengthen his weaknesses. Kudos to that young man .... and Cora for sending off to play for Mexico and have fun. I see Duran appears to be having fun now, and his performances reflect that. He should never doubt himself.

Basically his stats say he’s a good fielder, he’s a good hitter, he’s insanely good at base running and he plays more than anyone else. Very VALUABLE player to have on your team!

@@peskytalk Thank you for 'interpreting' his stats into words. I only get to see the 8-10min highlight vids, but your explanation confirms what I thought I've been seeing him do. I get a sense Duran is now also bringing some 'spark' and energy, as well as "F* that!" to a day off continuity. He appears motivated and invigorated. That can be infectious! Is he good at stealing bases? He runs the bases quite aggressively, so I suspect he probably is. No matter, I still like his hustle!

Baseball is a statisticians dream. Generally, choose whichever stat matches your agenda and argue with it. The all encompassing stat is WAR, or Wins Above Replacement. There are two websites that calculate this differently, fangraphs (fWAR) and baseball reference (bWAR). Generally speaking, getting a WAR of 8 in a season is considered elite.

Why isn't Duran respected more? I agree he should be an all-star this year, but it's easy to see why he isn't getting votes. First, he's relatively young and doesn't have a long track record of playing at an all-star level, and second, he's playing for a Red Sox team that no one's been paying a lot of attention to this year since they weren't expected to be any good at the start of the season. And while they've been better than expected all year, it's only pretty recently that they've started to consistently play like more than a mediocre team. Even Duran, while he's been great all year, has bumped up his numbers recently. (Though he was already playing very well, so the team's improvement is more due to the rookies Rafaela and Hamilton starting to figure it out and the return of O'Neil and Abreu.) It's not too surprising that no one outside of Boston has really noticed what he's doing yet. Hopefully he will make the all-star team even if the fans don't vote him in, but next year (assuming he's able to keep this up, and I think he can) will be the year that it would be a complete joke if he doesn't get more notice. By the way, saying that he was baseball's worst player is a significant exaggeration. 2022 was a really bad year for him, but I never doubted that he had the ability to be a good outfielder eventually. I was less certain that he would be able to hit well enough at the big league level. I wouldn't have dared predict that he'd be as good as he's been really going back to last year (when he was healthy). But I also always thought it was a possibility, and I was definitely rooting for him to get there.
