He is nothing special. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when they brought Fields in. But if you can't go down to Miami and beat those mediocre QB's, you apparently just don't have that elite skill set. What else can you say? Other QB's across the country have done more with less financial resources at the high school. At BG, he was a good QB with an elite football program. Most high schools don't have those resources and the best players moving in from other places. When he got to college where the talent level is relatively equal, he didn't stand out.

It seems every high school athlete loves to play this card, especially QBs. Watch the Elite 11 camp on the NFL Media Originals KZbin channel, or QB1 Beyond the Lights. Regardless of whether or not they do, they always say "I've always had a chip on my shoulder because I've been doubted." Like ok, bro. Sure

Baker Mayfield wasn't handed the job at Oklahoma, matter of fact Bob Stoops didn't know he was even on campus as of yet...ppl thought he was crazy at the time bcus we had Trevor Knight as the starter then...Baker redshirted that year and Competed for the job next year, in Lincoln Riley's new offense and won the job and then Knight transferred away....it's called competition, no job is just giving to you bcus its Open...Mayfield earned the job at OU and wasn't no 4 or 5 star for the job to be given to him...im a Sooners fan so I should know....but now the Cam Newton situation might be what u meant but he had success before he got there, so it was his spot not to lose, just don't mess up and the job was his bcus they had no returning starter to compete with...but Baker situation was different, just how you look at it

LMAO at your theory. Joe Burrow WON THE STARTING QB job for 3 straight years at Ohio State => and NEVER GOT A START => STILL WON THE HEISMAN AND A NATTY @ LSU ! Cardale Jones was better EVERY PRACTICE AND EVERY GAME than either Braxton Miller or JT Barrett => but was relegated to 3rd string => TWO INJURIES LATER +> and C Jones was starting => he won a NATTY and a B10CG MVP => SOMETHING MILLER AND BARRETT NEVER COULD DO => He also went 8 - 0 the next year and was BENCHED -> TWICE. JTB-IV came in and promptly LOST (a game C Jones would have easily won) This IS NOT TO SAY Tate Martell is a deserving QB => He and all the other running QB's that are just WR's/RB's/HB's/TE's/DB's playing qb in disguise would NEVER TAKE A SINGLE SNAP in my universe ==> but the point is => if YOU BELIEVE THERE's a level playing field and open competition at QB => you are NAIVE, DECIEVED and DELUDED. Sounds like Martell has a long history of going back on his word and doesn't follow through on what he says. Looks like if Tate is hit with any sort of adversity or if things aren't just handed to him he runs, doesn't stay and compete and put the work in to get better and actually win the starting job outright and earn the respect of his teammates in the process. If a mans word doesn't mean a damn thing and if he won't stay and work and compete to earn his spot earning his teammates trust and respect in the process then that's not a man I would want to be in a foxhole with, that's not a man i would want to go to war with, and it's not a man I would want in my locker room or on my team. One of the Saddest things in the world is wasted talent

He was/is a good athlete with poor defense reading and coverage recognition skills. In the 2018 OSU-Michigan game, Martell was given a series inside UM's 5 yard line. They ran the read option 3 times, he made the wrong decision all three times leading to a Buckeye FG rather than what should have been yet another TD as OSU ran and threw all over Michigan that day 62-39. I believe that series was enough for Ryan Day to say no thanks to Martell as Meyer retired and moved to a position in the AD's office at OSU. Enter Justin Fields and the rest was history.
