According to their interviews - ALL of the band was on LSD - except for the conga player with the red shirt (he must have went to the bathroom when the kool aid was passed around). Definitely Carlos, Gregg Rolie (keyboards) and Michael Shrieve (drum kit) are tripping hard!

To answer a couple of your questions. There was an estimated 500,000 thousand people at Woodstock. Also the drummer Michael Shrieve is using what's called "traditional grip" instead of what you probably see more drummers using what's called a matched grip holding both sticks the same way.. It's kind of a choice & some drummers were taught one way & others another when first starting out. Keep rocking guys!

Just found your channel. cool! not only was carlos tripping balls, but, they were unknown outside of the san francisco area and there were almost half a million people there. no pressure ;O). this is an edited version...the version from the movie, the drum solo is longer and the drummer Michael Shrieve KILLS it. he was 19or 20 years old at the time

Need some more Woodstock? Can't forget our boy Jimi Hendrix playing Star Spangled Banner holding his guitar upside down since he was left handed. He had been to Vietnam and seen the bombing and aftermath and damned if he don't bring those sounds out of that Fender. Truly amazing and defined that whole generation. Peace My Brothers

Saw Santana in 77. The first time my buddy and I took acid we ended up in a bar playing like 6 straight hours of foosball. World championship level lol Unbeaten, we were in some kind of zone. Then ended up outside in the snow staring at Christmas lights at some old folks home for maybe an hour till we came to and realized they were peeking out at us 😳😂🤦🏻

Carlos described the experience like “The guitar neck it felt like an electric snake it wouldn’t stand still which is why I am making ugly faces trying to make the snake stand still so I can play.” During this he prayed to God I will never do this again ever if you can keep me in time and in tune. Oh yeah sure he did it again, but probably not right before playing. So he kept his promise to God?? I guess God must've thought so cuz Carlos went on to fame and fortune. It was mescaline, but close enough. Please how about another Santana? This time an older more seasoned Carlos: Santana - Smooth ft. Rob Thomas (Official Video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIjLmKGVnqpoq8U

i was 11, my parents brought me along with some of their friends at the time. we arrived in (would you believe it) a Volkswagen combi..lol.... from what i remember, there a very heavy rain fall so the field turned into a sea of mud. but instead of the people leaving, every one frolicked in the mud, being a kid i used one of the lighting towers as a monkey bar to get a better view and for some reason a chant came out of the masses.. it went "wooo whooho ho ho" and went on and on then suddenly we all heard percussion resonating from the stage, thus the entrance of this song..a hell of a time as we would say back in the day.... peace oh and by the way... this is an edited shorter version of it

Probably my favorite from Woodstock - this was the bands first gig as a whole group, Michael Shreive the drummer was hired just shortly before they went to Woodstock! You have to watch the long version of this performance, it is the only way to give respect to Santana ☮️💎 They had tripped out on mescaline I believe. Another incredible performance ( tied with Santanas performance) is I’m Goin Home performed by Ten Years After, Alvin Lee was out of this world 🎸🥁🎸🥁🔥🔥💥💥🔥🔥

The only way they could play that well while tripping was if they had been practicing for so long that their bodies automatically did what they needed to do when the music started. Practice is what made this look so natural, even with the added substances.

They all took acid because they weren't supposed to go on stage until later that night. Then someone came in and said "Santana, get on stage, another Band that was scheduled to go now, just canceled, so you have to go on now." Carlos Santana was so High and seeing things, that his guitar was turning into a snake. It was all he could do to keep himself calm and finish the performance. It turned out to be not only one of the greatest live performances at Woodstock, but anywhere ever recorded. This video is Historic. The drummer was an 18 year old kid from Seattle. He was just a boy playing with grown men, in front of 5000,000 people. He was a hell of a drummer for only being 18 yrs old.

The only vato that wasn't on acid was the guy in the red shirt on the bongos. But at one point in the song he said he looked out over the crowd and seen a vision of Jesus Christ in the sky with his arms stretched out around the massive crowd.i seen it in an interview.the man had tears in his eyes and couldn't finish the story.

Phil Lesh, bass player for the grateful dead, once drank some apple juice before a show that had been dosed with acid, but whoever spiked it dumped WAAAAY too much in. As soon as it hit his lips he knew he was fucked and nearly had a panic attack. "I could *taste* the acid, it was that strong". He ingested at least a couple milligrams in one sip- a typical dose is around 250 micrograms. He lost all sense of reality. Mickey Hart, the bands drummer, had to put his bass in his hands and say "Phil, you play bass in our band, this is your instrument, we have to go onstage now"

Dont know about the other band members but the story that Carlos told was that they had HOURS before that they were supposed to perform and he had taken some MESCALINE which is a hallucinogenic organic substance that is used by native americans in religious ceremonies to induce a vision quest .after about only an hour at best they were told hey man schedule change and your up next 😳😱🤯 so Carlos said that when he was playing his guitar that the neck of his guitar had turned into a snake and he said that's why he was making weird facial expressions from looking at the guitar neck snake 🤣💪🤟

Santana said they were all tripping on mescaline. They weren't supposed to appear until that evening, but they had to get on stage due to a scheduling change right after they dropped the mescaline.

I have never really understood why people make such a big deal about acid having such an impact on this performance. Those who have actually dropped acid in this era (like me!) know that the first 2-3 hours into a trip is pretty mellow. No big hallucinations...at the peak of a 12-hour trip at 5 hours or so in, no way is anyone playing with any kind of dexterity (except in one's mind). Give credit where it is due...all of Santana's musicians are playing brilliantly not because of drugs but because of their talent and skill. Here is the full version of Santana's performance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYTTYWibqtuFhLcsi=Sf_VD0dj8mM_Q0qx

ahh - to me, from full strength Jr Hi Beatlemania to Pearl Jam >. this is THE best musicianship. love the percussion group , Arias ( the short guy ) Carabello, drummer Shrieve are the best. Utube has a 90 min. video a year later, live-tanglewood (Boston) fun fact - After Santana ( Saturday Woodstock ) came Incredible string band, Canned Heat, a real good set , NYC band Mountain, then RAIN. then Grateful Dead ( still raining , their amps were shorting) Creedence Clearwater, thenJanis Joplin, Sly family in a famous movie performance, The Who, then Jefferson Airplane, actually dawn on Sunday. Joe Cocker started the Sunday afternoon set Which ended Monday am with Jimi Hendrix. not a bad lineup. $ 6.00 per day. ( official ' Woodstock, 3 days' book). ps - M.Shrieve held his sticks in the old, classic way > based on marching band style pre sophisticated drum harness setups. Also - the 'hippie era' started in '66 With the Beatles 'Revolver' the Summer of love' 1967 , See the ' Monterey pop Festival'. movie. Utube

Mike Shrieve (Drummer) turned 20 the month before, and Carlos turned 22 the same month...They were only known in the San Fran area..The owner of the Fillmore East (NYC) and West (SF) was Billy Graham (who managed Santana, but also The Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane) was asked by the young promoters of Woodstock for him to lend a hand, because they were having some problems..He agreed on the condition that Santana be put in the lineup...And the rest is history!

I don’t want to approve of drugs, for some reason, Artist especially genius artist used drugs to expand their mind their art! It’s sort of opens the mind to a new a dimension of sounds in music or color in paintings;,but it always come with a cost of being very dependent on the drugs. Many addictions many young and old death in all Art industry! Great example, Picasso, Beethoven, Jazz musicians, Blues musicians, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendix, Led Zeppelin and many more! Unfortunately, “Many” tragic death many “SOUL SACRIFICE” because of the deal with the devil to be the greatest of all even if it’s one time!!! Listen to Metallica Master of Puppets and you’ll understand!!!
