I made the mistake of grabbing the safety bars when I lost my balance while doing Squats in Highschool. I weighted 120 lbs and was squatting 265. I was able to squat that much, but just messed up my technique and let my weight roll too much onto the balls of my feet. I attempted to drop the bar and drop, but like an idiot I threw my hands out to either side to catch the safety bars. The squat bar came down right on top of my left ring finger and amputated it instantly. I feel like I got very, very luck, however as if it had hit further up the hand, I might not have an entire hand. If you're bailing, just bail and drop, never try to catch yourself.
@GetRightFitnessАй бұрын
Yep, I don't understand not using the safety bars for Squatting and Benching. If you have access to them, use em. We're trying to get ourselves stronger and fitter, not injured or worse. Plus, from just a training standpoint, injuries equal setbacks. Nobody wants setbacks, setbacks suck.

I always use safeties & cup the bar with an open palm in case i need to bail. I learned early on that your hands only need to keep the bar from rolling off, no need for a death grip. Works great for me 👍
@MrLukeydukey84Ай бұрын
Squatting with an open palm does not allow you to pull down on the bar to engage the lats/core. The death grip isn’t going to hurt you when you fail as your hands can open way faster than your hips can drive away from the bar.
@beelikemizu604Ай бұрын
@@MrLukeydukey84 I can pull down just fine & do, my hand is cupped. I just prefer not to wrap my thumb around and squeeze the bar itself as there is no added value to that & your thumb can get in the way when you bail. It’s just a preference I learned online, I love it but do as you please though.

I think this needs to be a broader conversation about bailing in general. There is NOTHING wrong with bailing on any lift. I was doing heavy dumbell shoulder presses for my size (65 lbs each) and one set about 3 reps in I felt my left side lose balance. All of a sudden midway through the lift, the dumbell started pulling my arm backwards. I realized I had messed up the trajectory plane of the lift and didn’t have time/leverage to correct. I instantly dropped the weight, scaring the hell out of my spotter and pissing off some old dude across another bench because of the sound. Small price to pay for not tearing the shit out of my rotator cuff, which is what would have happened had I tried to hold on at that point. Don’t be afraid to bail on a lift!!!!!!

Bailing like that on safeties is unneccessary though. It makes sense if you're lifting on an open surface but if you have safeties, you can just set them higher and 'good morning' the bar back down onto them, otherwise you'll beat up the bar which will bend it. The coach taught it incorrectly.

They practice squatting out in the open for the sport of weightlifting. You need practice bailing the weight out in front from a deep front squat for the clean and you need practice bailing the weight out in front and behind from a deep overhead squat for the snatch. And you can't really do the olympic lifts in a squat rack. Bailing your squat fails out in the open is more practice for when you fail your oly lifts.

Gym culture in general tends to focus on people who train for competitions. It's like a guitarist trying to be Van Halen from day one. You gotta get there. And the only guaranteed way of getting there is the SAFE way. Train with less weights, if you're in a situation that can kill you, and if your ego is the reason you got into that situation, stop training weights all together and get your mental fixed. You're not cbum. You're not Van Halen. Stop trying to lift like them or play like them. Learn to walk the slow, safe, guaranteed path. Don't make your success dependent on you overperforming at all times. That's only going to make you feel like an underperformer on days you can't overperform. This mindset will push you to try and squat something that you obviously can't/shouldn't/don't need to. Tl;dr don't get yourself in a situation that can kill you, just to get a shortcut. There IS no respawn.

You could just squat slow and controlled for reps so you don't have to use a weight that is really high and you might get stuck on. It's ok to leave a few reps in the tank as long as you get 6-8 seconds of muscle fatigue sensation at end of set you are making good progress.
@coolyoutubename16Ай бұрын
That sure does sound like advice on how to get stuck in a bodybuilding routine, monotonously chasing "the pump". And you will still achieve muscular failure with this. Not everyone is doing reps. Some people want to actually get stronger
@Jolly-Green-SteveАй бұрын
@@coolyoutubename16 If I was trying to go for pump I would be doing 20-30 seconds of fatigue with much lighter weight for higher reps. Getting better is achieving more overall load in your workouts in as few sets as possible that you can still recover from but using other methods like slow negatives/partials/cluster sets etc will help with your development as well. I'm a second generation bodybuilder with a home gym that is as old as I am don't try and tell me I don't know how to progress with bodybuilding.

Spotting squat from behind needs to be banned period. Either squat with safeties or with 2 people on both ends of the bar. Spotting from behind creates the opportunity for miss-communication and misjudgement. The person squatting may fail to the point where even with assistance, they cant get back up, so they need to communicate they are gonna bail, or they are gonna end up falling and getting folded, or the spotter is gonna end up bicep curling over 100kg, which isn’t gonna work out.
