What’s crazy is that most creators do this sporadically without thinking about it so success often feels random. Going that extra step of quantifying it, giving it a name and citing examples is so much more helpful. Thanks Jay!

- Input Bias: the more effort is put in, the more value is perceived. Showing it better than saying it. - Costly Signalling: The more money spent to communicate the more attention is given. - Contrast Effect: More likely to watch if content breaks expectations. - Spotify "For You" Playlist: Adding novelty to the familiar is what we love, more than all novel -

10/10 video again Jay. You ask such thoughtful questions. Have subbed to the Nudge Podcast too - Phill is v interesting. I disagree on Mr Beast recording in 1080p because of the contrast effect. I think it's actually an 'anti-signal'. His productions have become so grand, that they're starting to resemble network gameshows more and more. I think the 1080p (and other intentional bits of 'amateur-ishness' are left intentionally to keep the authentic KZbin feel.

Makes sense. I got rid of tv and it’s because of the gaudy stupid content like America’s Funniest Home Videos. And game shows.

Now, this... this is something i think i never heard in podcasts or things like that, but it confirms my point of showing how i made big projects in videos, so i record almost every big project i am making since 2 years 😅, and it helped me a lot to create videos on tiktok, videos which worked greatly (10,000 to 100,000 views) just on making off content and from an unknow guy from them at the start. Thanks a lot, this is really great advice 😍!

Since we have stopped the whole intro sequences on youtube videos, It allows us the opportunity to load up on input bias with our credibility for 5 seconds after the hook and before the value, so it creates that bias that you are worth listening to

What about this? There was a normal, usual grocery shop that was in my neighbourhood, operating since 5 years. Then one fine day another one opened right next to the older one. However, this newer one was too fancy, new, modern and had everything to make it look expensive. The entire neighbourhood, though was very impressed by the new store, preferred to buy from the older one because they thought the newer one would be expensive even though they both came same stuff. Could it be a reason why Mr. Beast uses the camera and setup which is not expensive otherwise his segment will not feel at home?

This is not THE reason he's so successful, but A reason. There are elements of challenge in his stories, novelty, money, social interactions, emotional engagement, and much more. Using costly signaling is just one of the methods to **increase** the appeal, but ultimately it's decided by the topic. But even then the costly signaling is not the best method to increase appeal, there are value signaling ("will make you rich", "will relieve your pain"), fear signaling ("how this guy almost died", "i regret doing this"), personalization/relevance ("tornado in Oklahoma", "tips for moms with jobs"), personification ("how I did something", "my experience with something"), storification ("the one time a teen hacked CIA", "history of the richest family"), exaggeration, novelization, so on and so on. There are basic human needs, say if we take Maslow's pyramid as an example - physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, self-actualization, and these needs drive high interest in the topics, and the lower in the pyramid the wider the audience and more intense the interest for it.

I watched one Mr Beast with no interest in ever clicking again. Certainly it works for him and people like to win free stuff just like on tv. And I no longer have a tv😂. I didn’t find anything useful for me but I’m sure others who are here for a business will. The effort? A video of a wild rabbit I snapped in 50 seconds got more views than a ghost story I spent hours on or a fable about foxes made with AI art illustrations that took two days to accomplish. 😂 So I’ll stick with my freelance career with its reliable income.

I know you interviewed Jenny Hoyos but I'm feeling like this channel is very skewed towards interviewing men. I didn't care but now that i think about it I'd love it if you interviewed a few more women. I feel kinda out of place as a female KZbinr when all the advice is skewed towards the male creator perspective. There tends to be a slightly different set of priorities and differences emotional weights to aspects of things. Possibly different challenges as well based on slight differences in how genders approach things. It doesn't have to be the focus for these things to still show up on subtle ways if you read between the lines.
