To be fair about the War Doctor, Moffat didn't intend to introduce a new regeneration, he wanted to use Eccleston's Doctor for the 50th anniversary, just Eccleston refused to play any part forcing him to introduce a new incarnation so he wouldn't have to change the story much. As for the Meta-Crisis Doctor, that always felt half-assed the (even the Doctor in Time and the Doctor, only used that as a possiblesuggestion, so he probably wasn't sure), so the Ruth Doctor could easily fit in as the actual lost regeneration (presumably in the Season 6B slot, as she is or was an agent of the Time Lords) As for the new regeneration cycle, that has more to do with it being pre-established from the 4th Doctor era of a 13 regeneration limit, and Moffat addressing that, allowing Doctor Who to potentially continue on for another 50 years.

1. The TARDIS gets stuck as a police box in An Unearthly Child 2. The sonic screwdriver was introduced in Fury From the Deep 3. The First Doctor regenerated into the Second Doctor onscreen 4. Ruth's TARDIS is a police box 5. Ruth didn't recognise the sonic screwdriver So, basically, either Ruth is an alternate version of the Doctor in some sense (Probably my preferred resolution to the plot), the next Doctor, or she's something monumentally stupid. Otherwise, this was an OK episode, and generally well paced and written, although the use of Captain Jack was bizarre. Just bring him back or don't, not this pointless teaser cameo. RTD would probably have put this episode just before the finale, and unless more stuff happens in episodes 6, 7, and 8, that's probably where it should have gone.
@doughorton36354 жыл бұрын
I agree with your five points. It also wouldn't make sense if she was the real Doctor before Hartnell because then we'd have to accept the "logic" that she was a woman traveling around in time and space in a Police-Box TARDIS (something the Time Lords would have frowned upon) then she came back to Gallifrey (as a man or changed into one), had a family, left Gallifrey again with his granddaughter in a plain TARDIS that got stuck as a police box yet again.

I really miss when the show was about adventure and exploration since the back half of season 7 it’s just been about retroactively bastardizing The Doctors Personal timeline and I am fed up with it. Clara getting credit for everything we loved about the Doctor, Surprise John Hurts, the 1st Doctor showing up and being a low-key sexist and now more new old Doctors because reasons. Stop retconning the past leave it alone, look to the future, move the story on create new thing and new adventures. Add to the history of the show instead of messing with it . Retroactively adding new old incarnations to the Doctors timeline DOES NOT WORK! Brain of Morbius hinted at past unseen lives and the fans soundly rejected it and The War Doctor was such a ham-fisted continuity destroying mess that he has all but been forgotten.

I think the twist in this episode works for me the most because of the context given by what the Master said in Spyfall. I really like the idea that the Master reveals the time lords were lying about something and there's a huge conspiracy, and the Doctor doesn't really get what he's even talking about until she runs into a past incarnation of herself that completely upends her idea of what her own lifetime has looked like. (especially since meeting a new Doctor is a huge surprise to the audience as well) Obviously, that implies that the two things are connected, but it seems like that's where they're going with it.

Disappointment is an emotion most treasured by us Britons and Dr Who, as an item of British entertainment has always delivered on this. The old way, and the way that has been used up until two years ago is to have a lot of rubbish or forgettable stories with the occasional good story mixed in so we know how good the show can be and how much it is failing to meet that level of quality. Moffat introduced overcomplicated story arcs that led nowhere, but created anticipation, and as an extension had entire episodes dedicated to nothing but the discussion of the story arcs which would retroactively become emitters of disappointment once the arc fell flat. Chibnall, in his genius has finally worked out a way of doing away with any good episodes, but keeping the fans from boredom (which will ultimately dull any disappointment) by creating arc episodes with tenfold the amount of anticipation packed in by sacrificing any consistency of story. The future of Dr Who and the British Dream is exciting.

"Yes" the episode in essence wasn't "bad", but when it's title was a subversion, Captain Jack was a token cameo, and Chibnall has admitted he doesn't give a SH*T about what respectable fans think of "HIS" Canon, it kind of stands out as a low point in the history of Doctor Who. I really hope its not another "insert Doctor here", or a forgotten pre-Hartnell version. And I suspect it isn't, although it would be the easy out. "Prediciton Corner Revisited" : the annoying line in Orphan 55 about the future not having happened even when you've been in it (or whatever tripe it was that makes everything that has ever happened utterly meaningless) will be important. "ruth" is an alternate timeline Doctor who later loses their existence as the threat of ther timeless child is revealed and Gallifrey restored (again) without having been destroyed in the first place. The second option is an alternate reality Doctor, from the same realm as the Kassavin; which would allow an easier of the Master to return for the finale. As for Jack, pointless fanwank. Good to see him for sure, but all that just to deliver one line about a sole cyberman. About 10% of run time wasted on a diversion from the plot that delivered one line of potential substance. Bringing characters back is great, but use them. Like many, I'm still waiting on Carole Ann Ford doing Susan's regneration sequence, and entering the academy on Gallifrey. i love that you put Noel Edmunds as an alternate timeline Doctor. That would have been hilarious. Especially if his companion was Mr Blobby. Also Spyfall heavily hinted at a multiverse. So i think she's a doctor from another timeline/universe. At which point its no longer a problem of where she falls in the list of regenerations. In fact if they do go with this as an idea they could have a bunch of other actors also show up as regenerations from this other universe. Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, Noel Edmunds. That DJ bloke who claimed to have been cast in the role after McCoy. Tim Curry. Hell throw in a few wildcards or obsurd fancasting too. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Dave Benson Phillips, Olivia Colman, Rupert Grint, Kris Marshall or Keith Chegwin. As enjoyable as Jo Martin is, this episode repeats the ongoing problem of surrounding a flat, weak main character with much better actors who are only guest-stars.

What do you think about the rumours saying it might be a pre-Hartnell regeneration? Others say it might be between Two and Three (which would kinda make sense) but I don't imagine Chibnall would explain the circumstances behind a random story from 1969 for his story arc in 2020.

I liked this episode a lot, and the fact that it felt like a guessing game of "who is the fugitive" and then "who's Ruth" was quite entertaining, much in the way that I found BBC's Sherlock entertaining. The only thing that really bothers me is Jack momentarily popping up. Thinking of the plot it feels quite out of place, and I think I'd rather have it happen at the end of episode 4 where it would definitely feel more important instead of being overshadowed by Ruth's Doctor. But overall it brought some lovely nostalgia and was really gripping. I'm excited to see where the rest of S12 takes this!

Random thought, but why do so many earth episodes take place in modern day Britain? They could give us some fairly recent nostalgia with episodes set in 1994 Skegness.

How does Jo Martin's incarnation fit it? *The Doctor's timeline* _First Cycle_ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 War 9 10 10 (Meta-Crisis) 11 _Second Cycle_ 12 13 Theory 1 = Jo Martin's incarnation is 14 Theory 2 = Alternate Realities are colliding (My Favourite Theory) Theory 3 = Season 6B secret Doctor in between 2 & 3 that makes the Meta-Crisis irrelevant Theory 4 = Split Regeneration Theory 5 = Mandela Effect Theory 6 = She is from the future but not 14 but further away like The Valeyard Theory 7 = She comes before 1 (I hate this theory)

I have recently decided: I don't care about series continuity. It's never going to make sense, and the point of my watching DW is to enjoy it at the time, not torture the timeline into a consistent mega-arc. Because that's what religious maniacs and conspiracy nuts do.

I actually liked the "Ruth Doctor". She had old-school vibes, for sure. I would have preferred this version of The Doctor to be the first female Doctor, but hey.

I like this episode and the twist was cool but it just feels very fan fiction. I hope Ruth isn't Pre-Hartnell as it would ruin the character development of the first Doctor as at first he was rude, selfish and initially he had no desire in being a hero but he slowly became the compassionate but adventurous character that we've come to know today. Also the First Doctor was surprised that the TARDIS was stuck as a police box and he didn't really know how to fully operate the TARDIS. Hopefully Chibnall isn't doing this twist for shock value and that he has a idea on how he wanted to conclude this mystery.

Ruth being the 14th (16th) Doctor doesn't make sense because of the Gallifrey stuff. She has to either be a different universe or past Doctor

I’ll give Chibnall his dues for at least trying to throw caution to the wind to try and break his own convention but I did say after Spyfall that destroying Gallifrey was sticking his head in the lion’s mouth and if this arc plays out as astronomically wrong as it has the potential to, there will be NO END of hell to pay for it...

I remember Series 1 trailers ” Do you want to come with me? “ Exciting trailers, followed by exciting stories. This Series is just Smoke & Mirrors. The Captain Jack scenes there to just promote the finale. The Judoon! Boring, thick Policemen for hire. Dr Ruth was far better than Jodie. That’s not saying much. I will stop watching until this era is over. That’s as long as Dr Ruth doesn’t turn out to be a Pre Hartnell Doctor , then I will be out for good.
@Caredroia4 жыл бұрын
It's really sad that ruth was a better actor than 13. It really shoots both Chibnal's choice of casting Jodi as the Doctor, and the BBC's touting her as the first female Doctor. It seems realistic that current agenda will make it that the Doctor was always a Woman to begin with (an earlier Regen-cycle perhaps) and the implosion of the shows history, for the sake of tempting new fans.

The fact that the doctors timeline is already a mess makes me not really care or get annoyed by it changing again (that and i like the whole thing with the other, so this concept isn't new to me). Just like how the continuity of the show is such a mess, that i really don't care when lets say something about the future of earth contradicts anothet future of earth because it already contradicted itself loads of times before that.
@TheWhoniversalMan4 жыл бұрын
I also have this feeling. It's already pretty ridiculously messy, and this twist doesn't feel categorically too distant from a lot of the wild retcons we've already had. I just hope it'll end up an interesting story in the end. So we'll have to wait and see. Like we tend to do...
@johnburton38654 жыл бұрын
Just found Chibnall saying this Ruth IS the Doctor and NOT an alternative universe one. So all we can do is wait and see. Interestingly she called her TARDIS her 'ship'. "The important thing to say is - she is definitively the Doctor,” he told the Mirror. “There's not a sort of parallel universe going on, there's no tricks. "Jo Martin is the Doctor, that's why we gave her the credit at the end which all new Doctors have the first time you see them. John Hurt got that credit.”

Feel like when a new showrunner inevitably looks to revive the show, they will look at all these "secret regenerations" as overly complicated and may be tempted just to reboot the series to make it simpler for mainstream audiences, whilst also having the benefit of reintroducing a lot of the concepts.

So, I know that people have been asking why Jack was in the episode if he's, apparantly, not going to come back. Was it Chibnall trying to just throw in needless fan-service? Not exactly, I realized it was done to get the companions away from the Doctor during the Ruth reveal, which works so much better with just the Doctor on her own. Imagine if the companions were there, they would have to write in unnecessary dialogue for them. So THAT, people, was probably why Jack came back.
@theoutcastboi4 жыл бұрын
The bit where you make the Timeline kinda sums up a big problem I've had with Doctor Who since Day of the Doctor. The timeline should be simple and easily to follow, just 1 - 13, but now it's all over the shop with hidden Doctors, non-Regenerations that still count and mass confusion. When I'm having debates with people about whether 10 after Stolen Earth was a different incarnation to 10 prior to Stolen Earth, that's a problem, and if I and other long term invested fans are debating about the amount of Doctors there are, god knows what the average joe would think to the timeline. At this point I feel the show just needs to retcon all these hidden Doctors and meta-crisis Regenerations, just bring it back to a simple 1-13 again.
