The boxer engine actually got it's name because the movement of the pistons is similar to that of a boxers gloves.

The trick is to use the MLM OEM turbo gaskets. I've seen them last over 200,000 miles. If you scratch the heads, they'll leak. If the heads aren't square, they'll leak. Felpro gaskets will eventually leak. That blue gasket material came off right? the MLM OEM turbo gaskets don't have any graphite or material layer they are all metal. You also don't need new bolts unless they are damaged.

i have a 2012 outback 201xxx miles i just pickled up for 950$ with over heating issues. I have Idled the shit out of it no over heating ive driven it no over heating. But i do get bubbles in my overflow and or my rad. Its seems the head gasket has been replaced as it appears the have 3 layers on the gasket. I dont know too much but arent the oem on these single layer head gaskets? Final thing, if i am going to replace the head gasket what gasket do you recommend for a upgrade or replacement as i really dont know if some of the gaskets coming up on the web are good/bad/bulletproof as i do not want to revisit this anytime soon.

The NA ej's are stupid reliable aside from the headgasket issues. That and keeping up with the timing belts, they'll run forever!
@veganpotterthevegan4 жыл бұрын
Aside from a sure thing failure, they'll run forever😂 *I have an NA EJ25. It'll be fine because it was rebuilt with a gasket Subaru used for the turbo EJs

besides the two major components failing that can cause total breakdowns… it’s fine!

Try using distilled water with your coolant, keep the internal corrosion to a minimum.

Why did you torch the engine at 3:15?
@SnivythePokemon11 ай бұрын
It was the warm up the crank bolt allowing it to be easier to remove. I have to do the same thing to my 175k mile LS1. They can be tough to get off if they havent been taken off in a very long time.

Just an opinion but I read those whiz wheels do work but they create divets or remove material in a non uniform way

You can get a new tensioner bracket also, in case you didn't want to do heli-coil thread replacement. I've stripped the threads out of that bracket on my car before too.

Very simple design, however everything today has to have GDI/VVT 25 timing chains, tensioners one looks at and they fall apart imploding the engine. Working at a Yamaha shop that design looks like a street bike engine from the 1980's!!! Except they were not horizontally opposed. The old BMW's were I remember some of them...

I had Subarus (1999 & 2003) for 15 years and will likely get another. The 2.5 does have cooling and head gasket problems, well known. My 2003, actually needed half the block (2 cyl.) replaced ( at 26,000 mi) due to a defective casting. Perhaps having the gauge readout on social media would help.

This ISN'T the well known 2.5 liter EJ head gasket defect then? Wouldn't the check engine light warn her of overheating?

Never got a check engine light, but the temp gauge was obviously reading hot. She never really noticed it though until it was already hot.

If the head gaskets failed the first time on you why would you put the same failpro gaskets on it again ???? Run 6 star on turbo engines and factory subaru HG on all NA engine's.... subaru did fix the head gaskets problem of the past they are now MLS with a real good coating on them ....good luck bud

Jason, I've got a 2006 NA Outback and the recommended factory HG is the A633 and it doesn't appear to be an MLS. It's a coated single layer but it is the 5th revision since the original A521. I bought the A642 but worried about using it cuz Subaru doesn't specify it and no dealer would recommend. Which gasket are you talking about? Thanks!

@@Allen-bm6tz on that year Subaru I use head gaskets from Subaru that's for same year Subaru from the Forester XT turbo engine .Since 1999 with no problems. My wife's 2001 subaru outback sedan. I JUST CHANGED THE OIL ON IT TODAY AND IT HAS 299,700 MILES ON IT. ALSO USE CASTROL NON SYNTHETIC OIL I USE 10 W 30 FOR THE WHOLE YEAR SUMMER AND WINTER. THAT'S WHAT WORKS FOR ME. ON SUBARU THAT ARE NEWER THAN 2010 USE SYNTHETIC BLEND CASTROL OIL. AND THE SUBARU FORESTER XT HG FROM SUBARU.....
