They should teach this scene in film schools, it's so well done. It saved itself half an hour of character development by summarizing their traits. Like Kitty holding the Jim Cunningham book and sneering at the science teacher. Or Seth giving that glare. Also the headteacher looking authoritative. All that in 2 and a half minutes.
@cw9817 Жыл бұрын
And notice how the song has been edited so that the lyrics match up with the characters. "I'm lost in admiration" hits just as Kitty is introducing Cunningham to the teachers and principal. "Child in your face" comes as we watch Gretchen walk through the hall. "You keep your distance" accompanies the principal ignoring drug use.

500 days of summer has a great soundtrack, the songs are used really well with the story too (expectations vs reality scene "I'm the hero of this story, I don't need to be saved" ), you make my dreams come true, the irony of the Smiths songs, the piano score (things were going so well, ikea, anal girl) The movie introduced me to the Smiths (again, ironically since the whole point is not to "listen" to them) and Regina spektor (and she & him - Zooey dechanels music, which is mostly good covers with a couple nice original songs like Sitting on the shelf)

The Director's Cut may explain more, but that isn't always a good thing. The Theatrical Version actually makes you think for yourself, instead of spoon feeding you details. Richard Kelly, whether it was intentional or not, created 'a Kubrick".The simplicity of what is a paradox, the dreamlike montage, it's all so perfect in a falling to pieces kinda way. When you're in it, you are steamrolled by the brutal truths that are trying to play themselves out before the story ends. Richard Kelly created something that he himself admits is almost beyond him; that can happen when a film keeps its deadly simple and let's the mood and the imagination of the viewer take over. Deep down, we know "something is off" as do the characters in the film. This is a masterpiece.

This movie is so interesting from a psycho analytical perspective. On the one hand everything with the time travelling and Frank seems so real, but then we know Donnie is diagnosed with schizophrenia. So this could all be a hallucination of Donnie's that we're seeing.
@MegaTriumph18 жыл бұрын
+hyukhyuk Diagnosed by who. Maybe its not schizophrenia. It could be a supernatural experience that normal people just don't have. John Lennon in his childhood was very well acquainted with the spirit world. He woke the neighbors up screaming so loudly that there was someone in his room. He talked about it to his aunt. This movie could be a baby step to the outside of are every things ok world.
@cadburysholic1238 жыл бұрын
MegaTriumph1 I never said it was schizophrenia. I said it could be schizophrenia. In Freudian theory schizophrenics often have hallucinations in which they see themselves as very important or central to something- i.e. Donnie knowing it's the end of the world. The movie does not have one straight answer.
@MegaTriumph18 жыл бұрын
hyukhyuk To me it has one straight answer. He died but before his life was taken he was given 28 days 6 hours 42 minutes 12 seconds. At the end of his time he was happy to restore the time line. The director was only twenty seven years old so I think its not all that deep of a movie. It had about every satanic symbolism it in it. I find that the most disturbing.

This scene was viewed as an "indulgent music video" initially by some people in the production. But they changed their minds after having seen it in full.

One of my favorite scenes, it shows all of the important characters that are going to be in the film. It's honestly stunning and this film is by far, my favorite and in my opinion, it's just too good, too good that I consider it a perfect 2001 flick. The acting portrayed and the plot, story so well written and driven. Shows that films back then were the greatest.

The intensity & sophistication of this song take me back to the UK of the 80's when I was young, life was good & the rest of my life lay at my feet. Funny thing is although I have always loved the song & even have it as my ring tone now, back in the day if you were REALLY into music, Tears for Fears were considered too "commercial!"
