I liked the story, though I was a bit bummed that they showed the wrong American carrier in the video. Essex wasn't even built yet! The two American carriers at the Coral Sea were Lexington and Yorktown. Then I remembered that the Yorktown class--arguably the best pre-war American carrier class--isn't even in the game.

I think I've heard this story before somewhere. It never fails to make me chuckle when the Japanese drop their ammo, then try to land on the Carrier they were supposed to destroy! XD Really though, can you imagine the sheer rage and frustration those guys must have been feeling? Or what the American CV crewmen thought as they began to realize that it wasn't American planes that were trying to land?

+mariofan1ish The Americans probably knew it was Japanese because it didn't signal. In this event, a destroyer started opening fire. Its also likely the crew on the carrier got chewed out for letting an enemy plane get so close.

I remember reading about this. This video is very well done from start to end. Despite that I already know the result, 1:54 really got me to tense up with eh music choice and narration. If they didn't ditch their bombs and torpedoes, things might of went very differently during Coral sea. That was epic, you can feel their desperation and the captain's sincere wish to save those pilots.

Not really, the Japanese carrier force still had a lot of bite in them during the Solomon islands campaign and dealt several major blows to US forces. It was after 1943 that the Japanese navy air arm really deteriorated.

A similar sort of story happened during The Battle of the Philippine Sea. After a very late and extreme ranged strike on the Japanese fleet, night fell and the returning planes began running out of fuel. Risking submarine attack, the American commander had his carriers turn on their lights in an attempt to guide the planes back. Still, 100 planes of 215 were lost on the strike; 20 through combat and 80 had to ditch.

He took a risk, and at least he saves some of his pilots rather than none. Pilots in the IJN by then were scarce and were high value individuals.

***** but Russian navy have the darkest story of whole navies in the world, many great heroes in Russian navy but they still unknown by many they must complete russian/soviet Saga and go to kaiserliche saga, maybe britsh destroyers saga, britsh cruisers/CV saga, Plan Z special, maybe continent based navy saga, Inter-war navy saga, Kriegsmarine saga, conclusion of Royal navy saga, And Imperial japanese saga. well this maybe not the correct order but i hope the next one must be Kaiserliche marine ^-^) i'm full from US navy :v i hope they make some extras talking about navy industry or navy armament industry we hear so much "Cannet" and "Krupp" when talk about pre WW1. but i'm excited to watch a naval legends from HMS Angicourt/ NAel Rio de janeiro e.e i love this ship in another game (navyfield 2/not a concorrent of Wows but an arcade MMOTS a sequel from the first Naval MMO game on market), in 2nd beta agincourt was avaible e.e i love play with, Fuso-class Battleship was based on this ship(just for curiosit ;) ).

I just noticed they depicted the Japanese carriers to have their islands on the starboard side of the flight deck. Japanese carriers had their islands on the port side

The carrier your seeing is IJN Shokaku commanded by rear admiral hara who commanded her in 1941 pearl harbor attack, the portside island carrier would be IJN Hiryu and IJN Akagi as both were bit of an experimental design to see which island better to place which starboard was as pilot tend to land on carrier on the portside so they moved the island to starboard for easier landing.
