I'm a 74 years young average golfer who plays twice a week; Always trying to find a magic instruction video that will improve my game... Ran over this video by Shawn Clement and must say that I found Gold... Of all the many videos I saw over the years, this is the one who made the difference in my game.... I finally found the right teacher that makes it easy to understand the basics... I guess you're never too old to learn and better enjoy the game... Thank you Shawn..

Shawn, such a simple thing to do with huge results. I've golfed about 5 times this year and struggled to find consistency....watched this video and made sure I remembered to do this with every stroke and I had my best round...ever! Was 90% consistent with all clubs and shot an 84 for the first time in my life!!!! Always shot low-mid 90's prior! Couldn't be happier man...miss you brother, all the best in Quebec!!!

Seems like this one tip helps in several areas.. it helps you with getting a fuller turn, it automatically shallows out the downswing making it not as steep, probably makes it easier to hit a draw, and most important is that you stay behind the ball when you hit it. Head position is rarely discussed but you gave super explanations as to why it is important 👍👍👍

I have done this since I was a kid for one reason, it’s the only way I can see lines, I’m Left eye dominant and right handed so a neutral head position makes me feel like I’m aiming left of my target if my alignment is very good, what happens then is I swing way out to the right and over turn the ball. So I have always used rods on the range to set up square then I tilt/turn my head towards my right shoulder a fair amount until my left eye is looking at the target, I hit fades from there so that just shows that I don’t even see a big in to put path the that eye tilt. If I don’t use rods and have a neutral head then I will aim my whole body to the right until I get my left eye on the target so I will be 15 yards right even although I’m square, same applies to putting, neutral head means I want to aim my whole body right then I’ll pull every single putt. Jack Nicklaus is left eye dominant and that’s why he turns his head to the right.

Played like this today. I started on the range. It felt weird at first being tilt but I stuck with it. By time I finished my basket and went to first tee. It felt normal. I was striking the ball so much better. Thank you for this video. I can follow through 100x better. I shot an 80. If I could’ve made some more putts. It would’ve been a lot lower. It was from driver or irons. Thank you Shawn!

I was watching some Lydia Ko among other female golfers and noticed that their hats all pointed straight down to the ground at impact. When I tried to mimic that I got my old feeling of being strong and behind the ball during impact. I looked at some of my own swings and yep, I had it backwards. The way this head position feels is so powerful and precise. It's feels like it's taking your focus away from the ball itself and putting it back into the swing (where it needs to be). Great video and awesome analogies.

Shawn, love the lack of focus on technique & more on pure (body) logic and I mean that as a compliment. The head is the heaviest part of the body & so moves your angles. This is so logical. Love the comment on the "money is out there" too. So simple yet brilliant advice. Thanks again.

This is an oldie, but man, is it ever a goodie. This is THE KEY to stop coming over the top. I personally like to preset both the turn and the tilt of the head at address and leave it there. I’ve tried tilting my head at the start of the downswing like Rory does, but I tend to overdo it and come up and out of the shot. I think we amateurs are better off presetting the turn and tilt at address, then keeping the head relatively still until post-impact. This is just great stuff; I’m 74 and I wish I could have seen it about 50 years ago...

@1:05 , Sun of beach!!!! 😱... so something that is happening in my dealieo, .... just did your hammer, club to alignment stick, and even put in my head, water out the right ear, and left ear ring lying on cheek mantra. hit 36, in a row no chunks, the feel is really different, having to adjust my eyes to the angle, per say, buttttttt, I noticed some automatic feedback of my head stays more consistently down through impact, vs me trying to look up. it's like my head is angle towards the target area, but eyes down, and I'm well through impact then I look up (hope I'm not too stuck) o well will keep working the drill and feel for this new head angle. previous, was center, then some how left, hmm that stack and tilting weight left side, probably got me.

Great tips that are easy to remember: 20 degree turn and 20 degree tilt of the head. I'd also remind viewers to let the head remain behind the ball at impact even as the knees and hips move over the lead leg and toward the target. As you have taught us in past lessons, that lower-body separation from the upper body promotes a club head path from the inside and fights an over-the-top slice or double-cross pull.

It's taken a few sessions at the range to really get the hang of it but it seems to have all come together this last session. Although I scored well on my western road trip my ball striking and consistency wasn't the best. Excited to keep working on this and to see what will happen the rest of the Ontario golf season. My goal was a handicap under 10 this year and i'm at 10.2!!! Hoping this will take me into single digits for the first time.

This has made a big difference in my consistency. Anytime I hit a high right chop, or a snap hook, or a short drive that finds the fairway, I know it's because I didn't pre-set my head. This preset kills so many birds with one stone it almost unfair! It kills the over swing, the sway, poor contact, coming in steep, not hitting up on the driver. It is a little hard to get used to how effortless it feels to get much better results.

so I had noticed the obviously practiced head movements of Rory and many others. They seem quite extreme. I had first noticed this when I watched bobby Jones swing. Just excellent stuff.

@ yes, they are doing this and I have put out several videos on that but it is not something they think about. If you were to go to our premium channel, the “blur of club” video would be the starting point and then you go to “head position and turn” then “head and hip swivel” because the top of spine is at the back of the head and the bottom of the spine is between the hips at bottom of pelvis. Then you go to our most recent and sublime posts of “blur of arc-immovable low point-unstoppable momentum.

I've seen this video several times, I have no idea why but I've always just rotated my head to the right but never actually tilted it. Sorry if I missed this in the vid, but another thing that happens with differences in head tilt and/or rotation is eyeline and its effect on where you perceive the target line to be, and therefore where you perceive the right path to be.

I was on this last night watching slow motion swings. Watch with driver iron and wedge. They don’t look at the ball. They find a spot with driver about 3-4 inches or so behind the ball and fixate their attention and head on that spot. They don’t look up until the ball is launched. Amateur golfers are fixated on the ball and as soon as we hit it we are looking up. Irons they’re a little more over the ball maybe an inch ahead, and wedges they’re about 2-3 inches ahead. I think it’s to get a full swing. They’re focused on their spot and swinging the club.

The head turn allows a complete shoulder turn and backswing makes total sense. The head tilt is the confusing one to me - is this needed to allow the right in-to-out path to happen? Or it allows the head to stay back but the torso to open to the target? I’m confused on that part I guess :-)

It allows the swing to follow along the ground and towards the target after impact and not go into the ground too steeply; like when you skip a stone on a pond! Imagine skipping stones on water and feel how the head tilts when doing this!

You can put it that way sure; but better than that, it is to keep you in the shot at hand to send a ball to the proper destination in the first place! 😝

Great video Shawn!! Do you use same tilt head position, same grip and same brace to the left on drivers and woods??? Hitting my irons pure! But struggling with hybrids, woods and driver
@golflessons
@golflessons 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely; just be aware that ball position changes on those; see "Rip the driver shawn clement" an oldie but goodie where you will see a great tip on how to find ball position for fairway woods and hybrids as well. Then see "driver-driver-driver shawn clement" and "91% fairways hit in regulation shawn clement"

Dear Shawn, thank you a lot for your great videos. About head. You say about horizontal positioning. Do you recommend to try to maintain the same level vertically? I mean try to stay at the same height.

Hey Shawn! Quick question. At address, and after you brace the front leg are you just moving the head 20/20? Or are you bracing the front leg. Tilting your upper spine away slightly from the target and then moving your head 20/20? Thanks!
@golflessons

A bit of both yes; bottom line is that you will feel like you can whip the sole of the club along the ground after the stem of the dandelion has been cut.

Thanks so much Shaun. Do you keep the 20/20 head position for all clubs? I thought perhaps more for driver and less for short irons?
@golflessons
@golflessons 6 жыл бұрын
All clubs! Depends on ball position for the shot; draw vs fade, driver will be more forward...see “tilt acid test shawn clement” now...

After the turn and tilt, it looks like Nicklaus is one of the few with the left eye lower than his right eye.Most have the opposite. Is there a difference?

Shawn - for a right hand golfer, can you clarify the 20 degree / 20 degree head position using terms of visual directions such as right/left or toward target/away target. Or, capture a video showing head position from your back side. Thanks.

Just watching a video of Peter Thomson showing one of his pupils Liz Young (European tour) and she has the negative tilt you mention Shawn and maintains it pretty much throughout her swing except for at impact, but she does seem unusual and I wonder if she tends to fade the ball.

Can this set up help prevent from sucking the club to far to the inside in the backswing? I did some practice swings in the yard and it seemed like I was able to get through the follow through better toward target
@golflessons
@golflessons 7 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily; you still want to have an intermediate point and feel like the swing is moving in that direction in both backswing and follow through; see "stay with your shot shawn clement"

Thanks for the great tip! I'll try tomorrow. Are you still supposed to keep your chin somewhat raised at address? Also, I have a severe problem with moving my weight forward on the downswing. Without a ball, I can do it easily. When a ball is front of me, it feels like I freeze, almost as if there's a wall there. Thoughts?

I tried this technique today, with mixed results. I lifted my right heel to begin, then my left heel during the upswing, which helped me a bit to move my weight to my lead foot. For whatever reason, I still was hitting behind and topping the ball on most of the shots, although when I did hit it flush, it was actually going a bit further than normal. I wish I could figure this out-----very frustrating. Thoughts?

Hey Shawn, pre-setting my head the way you do in the video has helped me make better contact (I think because it forces me to stay behind the ball). But it also leaves my neck tight and sore after each range session. Any suggestions?
@golflessons

It has to match your task; see “grass whip training shawn clement” and see what position your head wants to adopt when performing that task or the “hammer through shawn clement” video where we are stamping a ball through a door frame. Then make sure you let the right shoulder bring the head up into the finish and that you are mot trying to keep the head down too long past impact.
