We had the HUD in the previous car. In the Tesla, never missed it. Looks like a solution for a not existing problem.

@@TheFPSPower Elon went against it saying HUD or dash is not necessary because you have autopilot/self driving , but autopilot/self drive is a payed option and is not even legal in all countries plus there are people who do not want the autopilot. So yeah all of this is because Tesla wanted to push the autopilot/self driving option

You may use the speedometer+ app directly on the front screen. Uses the gps on the phone, so no cabling needed.

The coloured bar is definitely funky. Red for high drain, Blue for drive, Green for re-gen (and park..). Also some various other colours crept in a various points. So.... would it work directly behind the steering wheel instead of right up against the windscreen? That "might" be more of a "traditional" place to find a speedo. But I do agree with Erikincph that cables being visible looks messy and compromises the looks.

Unfortunately bunch of issues with those HUD imitations. 1. As stated in the video - need polarizing dark screen to remove 2 reflections. 2. It's not even remotely bright enough compare to OEM systems. Roughly 20 times. Sunny day can't see anything. 3. Normal HUD display is far away from glass with mirrors system so that it hangs above the car hood and not at the windscreen distance. 4. OEM makes image focused on infinity, so you can always read it without changing focus. 5. With all those films it's just too low to be useful.

You can get this type of device for any car with an ODB port. I guess it depends on your car how well it can be hidden. I like the idea but I also don't want anything on my car that looks after market. I remember once having a car where they had fitted after market electric windows - a big box that fitted over the window winders and moved around as made horrid noises as it wound the windows up.

Unless it is integrated into the navigation system and shows things like the direction of the next turn and distance to turn it is of minimal value. Look at the BMW HUD for a proper HUD design.

It certainly should, because it gets it’s data by tapping directly in to the CAN bus, and doesn’t depend on the center screen

Center screen just displays info, it doesn't really do much! Sometimes when the autopilot visuals crash I've restarted the screen whilst in Autopilot, it's a weird experience but works fine. :)

@@SuomiFinlandPerkelee It might be that the Model S/X MCU is less stable than the Model 3's. My Dad's 2019 Model X MCU has crashed a couple of times while I've been driving it (but not the display behind the steering wheel). But it always can be reset, even while driving, by holding down the two scroll-wheel buttons on the steering wheel. I can imagine that the S/X MCU is running a somewhat different code base, with more legacy code, compared to the 3/Y.

Hmmmm...HUD is supposed to allow you to focus on the road and the data with minimal eye adjustment. Not sure this unit achieves this. Visible wiring is not a good look given the minimalist Tesla interior. I think your choice of a dark textured dashboard replacement top is better use of your money. Thanks!

Technically, you are right. During slow acceleration the speed on HUD changed 3 frames (120ms) later than speed on MCU. However, during fast acceleration there were instances where HUD skipped a number and was couple of frames ahead of MCU. Altogether, I would consider this an acceptable difference.

Due to EU laws coming in 2022, I expect Tesla will have to put heads up on its cars if they want to sell and met the requirements. Additionally most EV's have adaptive heads up which is even better .

HUD are not part of any safety regulation in the EU. Besides, the march 2022 deadline only includes vehicles which are newly designed, not existing ones, which will follow in march 2024 though. That said, Tesla might have a problem with the obligatory road sign observation, which Teslas are currently not capable of. They pull their speed limit data from google maps.

@@bjornnyland HUD, when you get used to it, becomes a must-have. No.1 option. For now I drive Q7, 2017 MY, it has HUD. Tested recently e-tron, didn't like it overall. Compared to Q7, it was even louder inside, this was a big disappointment, didn't like seating position, it resembled me more like A6, not SUV, and you feel this additional "piano-weight" you carrie around. Still looking for EV, and Skoda Enyaq seems promising. Never considered Tesla, don't like the looks, neither interior, neither exterior.

If Tesla wanted to do something really cool it would do "Tesla glasses" which interacts with the car and not just show info status like speed / battery but highlight the road ahead of potential dangers, navi arrow indications and much more. I'm not a big fan of letting the machine do everything for you and you're just luggage, I like it when the machine works with you to improve your driving.

HUDs are expensive upgrades which not everyone is willing to pay for. Some find them distracting and unless they are implemented well with augmented reality navigation (the VW ID.3 has a primitive version of that) they are pretty useless. Keep in mind that Tesla is not capable to read road signs, which are pulled from potentially outdated google maps data, but would be shown in the top left of the display anyway.
